Show homes are interesting, but I have a couple of problems with them. First, the houses have no cohesion. Each room is like a soloist belting out her own tune rather than the choir a home should be. I get that we are supposed to take small ideas from each room, but I feel a little nauseous taking in the whole thing. Next, the rooms are not created for real people, so any personality they might have is completely artificial. Finally, these huge buldings are not of a scale that says home to me. I much prefer your ususal fare.

I like the fact it’s not the ho hum monochromatic colors throughout as if they ran out of colors. Each room has its own personality as would a person. It’s called Creative & Unique. Having multiple designers exemplified that. But then, that’s the idea of a Show Home although I’d take it as is.

I think with show houses, the designers are in a tough spot. A lot of these were less well-known designers (unlike the original Kips Bay NY which is a different level). So the designers want to get noticed - Kips Bay is a huge deal - but on the other hand, too over the top and you end up alienating potential clients who might like your normal work. I wasn't familiar with any of the regional designers but I have a feeling if you were to go to their IG, it would look very different from what was here, because you'd have a lot of trouble finding a regular clientele with some of these rooms.

Thank you Alison for giving us all a chance to see the entire house -- so many designers! It's a shame that the neighborhood around the house gave Kips Bay so many problems and would only allow in-person viewing for a few days instead of a month -- those entry fees support wonderful charities, which lost out this year. I hope architects will watch this and realize that even very experienced designers spoke about what a difficult problem the 20' ceilings presented on the main floor. I do wish that double-height spaces would go out of style already as they make it very hard to create anything that is scaled for comfort (and in person, they tend to echo). And the strange curved ceilings in the upper story -- it's one thing to try to create as much usable space as possible, but to not finish it off in a way that makes it designer-friendly creates some of the issues that people are commenting on here. They're just difficult spaces to work with. Commenters unfamiliar with how show houses work, please realize that designers are given only a matter of weeks to pull each of their designs together, first concept to installation (and we all know that you can't get anything quickly these days), and I agree that several of them would have benefited from more conceptual time, but it's high stakes, no budget, and no time. Kudos to Kips Bay for bringing in more southern regional designers, for whom this is a big break. It's very challenging to design when you're not working for an actual client, and also trying to get as much publicity value out of the opportunity as you can.
@AB-ol5uz
@AB-ol5uz Год назад
The organizers could have helped out their designers by defining a base color palette, theme, materials list, etc. to build from so that there was cohesion. As it stands, the results will be removed as soon as the buyer closes on the property in the majority of the spaces.
@_wesleyhome_
@_wesleyhome_ Год назад
@@AB-ol5uz they never do that -- the whole idea is to let the designers do what they want. It always ends up a jumble, but I agree with the overall assessment that this one was especially a mess. And yes everything goes, most of the designers are using pieces they either own or have borrowed from dealers.

Wow this is a lot to take in. Least favorite is the living room, staircase wall paper, south terrace ( not practical too much going on), & bedroom (the fabrics far too much very busy). The dining room has gorgeous pieces but the wall and ceiling is over the top with a more tone down color this would be one of my favorite spaces. The kitchen suite hands down is the best space inside the house and stunning. Christopher did a wonderful job designing this. Also love the North Terraces lovely space beautiful. The primary bedroom is nice but the headboard pattern throws it off a simple color would make this room a show stopper. Odd how the master bathroom doesn't connect to the master bedroom at all way more modern although designed well. The garden view office & bathroom is beautiful that designer and Christopher should've did the whole house would look better. This is my 2nd favorite space. If this was a contest Christopher would get my vote!!

It's so interesting to me how vastly different the end result of a room is when it's designed by someone who won't be inhabiting the space. Obviously every single designer went to town with their rooms, this is a huge professional opportunity for them to showcase their talents, but it's a good thing no one actually has to live in this space, it would make anyone stark raving mad! I think it would have been interesting to have the designers collaborate with one another a bit more to make the house feel a bit more cohesive, but I guess that's not the point. My take aways from these rooms are: there is no such thing as too many patterns coexisting in a room, wallpaper wallpaper, more wallpaper, and what else could we wallpaper, money is no object, and think big or go home. ALL THIS SAID, my absolute favorite space was the little hallway and powder room by Chad Gaci. I thought he really nailed it, really loved his color palette (Bewitched!!) as well as his powder room. The fixtures, yes, the wallpaper, the tiles in the bathroom,... If I could ever afford to hire a designer, I would happily work with Mr. Gaci! I still very much prefer seeing individuals' spaces that they have created for themselves, it's so much more intimate and personal, but it was very interesting to see this project. Honorable mention to the master bathroom! PS someone should tally up how many spots there are in this house to park your behind on, haha, I have never seen so much seating in my life!

Im sorry but it looks like someone vomited all over this home. Don’t get me wrong, I love color and have colorful walls throughout my home, but these “designs” made me nauseated 🤮. Most of this looked so outdated and mismatched, like the designers just took the liberty to try out a a variety of things they have always wanted to try and gave no thought to how those things would go together. Common! Have a heart! After so many years of grayness of industrial style… “in your face” fashion of 80-es comes back… and you are trying to fight it off! 😊 As for mirrors…. You are lucky to be a confident person with high self esteem. Some people (especially youngsters) would prefer surrounding themselves with messages that boost their confidence… instead of looking at themselves in the mirrors. It is a sad reality. The Beauty room is gorgeous. It is a mixture of Art Deco elements and 70-es quirkiness. And enough boldness to step out of industrial “50 shades of gray” environment. I would call it Retro 80-es disco style… Funny and joyous! We should not be that serious and adamant! Let’s have some fun! Remember, we are living the “roaring twenties” … only in the 21th century.

Most of the rooms made me nauseous because of the excessive use of patterns, which I have a strong aversion to. The only room that I did not find offensive was the Lucinda Loya bedroom, and I was at best lukewarm about that. When I was designing high end furniture in Los Angeles, my designs sold mostly in New York, but we also had a showroom in Dallas, although my particular style is not that popular there. I grew up in Texas but left as soon as I was able. I am very much of a minimalist, which is one of the reasons that I do not like what I see here. I also do not like any of the color schemes.

I was disappointed that there was very little reference to the fact that the home is in Dallas! Surely, they wouldn't have gone over the top/garish to that extent if the home was in Malibu....so I don't understand why it wasn't scaled back/more refined in the living areas/bathrooms to make it more livable for the Dallas culture/weather, etc. There was very few spaces where you could rest your eye. All I could think was what a waste of money and exquisite materials if someone purchases the home and then rips out 90% of it - which is very likely. I think the Kips Bay concept would be far better served to have a general scope - color pallet - theme - and baseline of materials - so there is more cohesion in throughout and the focus is less on the ego of the designer and more on providing spaces people don't want to leave.

He definitely stepped out of the box with the Bold use of indoor feeling furniture I'm not certain if some of the shapes are as carefree as the environment that it's in they seem like you said he's formal and it feels formal doesn't feel like you're outside which that's the look he's going for but I don't know it's it's kind of I like that he stepped out of the box and sort of free thought the situation out however I'm just not that I love the shapes of the furniture I love High placed it I just don't think and I want to know what that fabric is that textile it's I don't know it just seems heavy the whole area just seems super heavy super formal I love the shapes they would do excellent in an interior design but a outdoor space I don't know I don't know it's something about it that just gets me I love the fact that he toned it down since it is outdoors but it's just like how people do like these all white living rooms or dining rooms or Living Spaces it gets blah after a while like you're in an interior design situation zest that thing up especially since you using those bull shapes like for some reason I would think that somehow he could find the bowl use of a textile maybe On The Backs or in the pillows like but everything's very subtle but I get it I heard him say you know because you have the natural elements giving you a lot of volvoom that there's no need for the furniture to have it with its heavy heavy heavy selves LOL

Love the plaid walls...the ribbon detail, furniture placement, lamps etc. I wish I had that room as my own. Whatever style that is is what I like !!! Good to see.

My absolute favorite is Alessandra Branca's living room! Wow! a beauty! The wallpaper is perfect! I would change the plaided patterns though, but who am I to criticize? All the rest is gorgeous! Love it! Love it! Love it!

Natasha Baradaran's designed bedroom. Soon as saw this I wanted to cosy up and have a rest or sleep 💤. I liked the lights which brought in a pop of fun and the art look bedhead 👌🏼 Natasha is right about having a meditative space. I would definitely use it to do my pilates exercises. Stunning bay window views and a perfect place to read 📘 . I don't think I would want to leave this room 😉💙 The rooms in the other homes were amazing and showed so much character in each persons home. Being large homes they can carry the bright colours and lots of patterns.

I think for big mansions definitely Patricia has good taste in colours, disposition furniture and dessins. I see many designers and only certain items catch my eye. I liked that rug on that marble floor bedroom. I also liked very much that chequered curtain at the kitchen door. I also liked that shiny grey interior with that asian designer. Not that it is all bad, it is also a matter of taste. The way Patricia set that bed in front of those curtains ...and that beautiful carpet.

Why would anyone choose great mirrors for the beauty room to put those hideous flowers clashing and hiding them? Most rooms felt not thought through…to me only the last room with the paisley window treatments was cohesive..everything else could’ve been worked much more.

It's fun to see all the different styles. Some are not my taste but I am hardly an interior designer, Ha!🤣I liked the kitchen and Patricia's bedroom the best. I guess I'm a traditionalist. But, they were all inspiring and I thank them for sharing their vision.
