The writers must have a wanted Lisa Edelstein out for you whatever reason, underestimating the pull of her character. You have seen it happen in so many series, they thing a character is not needed until the character leaves and the series loses ratings forcing th series to end.
@@Baykko Hugh Laurie's contract was up after season 8 and he wanted to move on to film roles. Hence the show ended after eight seasons. Fox already thought about cancelling after season seven though due to declining ratings. This resulted in a budget cut for season 8 due to which Lisa Edelstein refused to renew her contract since the budget cut also forced pay cuts for the actors and she refused to take hers.
