3:16 When Chase tells House to be objective. The look on House's face. It's devastating. He's not fully being House cos he cares too much about Chase. And Chase is telling him he needs him to be House to save him from permanent paralysis. It's a beautiful, bittersweet moment cos for once House was letting himself be led by his emotions and though the reason why is very understandable, it's rejected by Chase as not what he needs. Thus the moment also underlines how much like House Chase now is. So much packed into a couple of seconds!

The fact that he is the most removed from the case, adds up to his objective account of the situation.

And yet, what the other guy said is also true. House created an atmosphere in which Chase felt it was an option to defy direct orders of his boss, and just do whatever the hell he wanted.

@@jlammetje Or distracted Chase with a prank war. Or made the competition to be right more important than other considerations like safety. Chase's decision was the direct cause, but that doesn't mean there weren't indirect causes, as well.

Taub was correct but that doesn't mean the investigator's assessment of House's role was incorrect. House was by definition not irrelevant. Chase would not have likely done that with any other boss - he felt he could with House as House's team encourages risk-taking (in this case equivalent to 'recklessness') and breaking the rules *while* having overall been unclear on whose rules it is permissible to break (the hospital's or his own). The fact that Chase said "I would do it again" made it clear that this wasn't a momentary lapse in judgement - this was part of a 'risk-taking' or 'game' dynamic which endangered the patient as well as everyone else. But while House may have instituted that dynamic - because it more often than not produces the creativity and boldness necessary for the complex and rare cases they get - it doesn't mean it was "inevitable" for Chase to have reacted that way. That reaction was made 'more likely', sure (though that's difficult to quantify), and it was always possible that whoever House employed in that operational dynamic would have made the same decision in those circumstances (and similarly, it was possible that they would have not). Yet that's not to say that House was fully (or even primarily) 'to blame'. The investigator was tasked with making a black or white judgement, but if you have to choose from the two options (presuming there were only two) of 'guilty' vs 'no one's fault' - you can't give a guilty verdict due to the aforementioned grey area. But that doesn't equate "cleanly" into a full acquittal either - 'no conviction' (or 'not primarily to blame') ≠ 'no blame'. House understood this. He meant both things: when he defended his process saying that "bad things sometimes happen, good things mostly happen", and when he apologised to Chase. He knew that Chase was collateral damage of his process and he was probably wondering if that was avoidable. Ultimately, while Chase's common sense was overridden by House's competitive pressures, the fact that it was not *inevitable* for every doctor in his same position to have made the same error means that the primary responsibility lies with Chase - especially when Chase is fully aware of his workplace dynamic and yet chooses to continue working there, knowing the possible risks. I think Chase knew this too, which is why he effectively 'forgave' House. As someone else has said on here, they both understood each other and the relative weight of their responsibilities in what happened - and if anything, House was being (on the surface) uncharacteristically generous in future episodes when he said that Chase did nothing wrong ("you reassess your life when you make a mistake; you didn't, you just got stabbed"). But he did make a mistake - and it sounds cruel but that's just a self-evident fact: consider how we'd all think of it if someone else like Adams was seriously wounded too. But House did that to try to alleviate Chase's guilt and take it upon his shoulders - he wasn't by any means fully responsible for Chase's error, but he was willing to accept the blame for all of it to absolve Chase. That's the degree to which he cared about him. TLDR: House established a risky process; Chase failed to apply the necessary risk mitigation; both recognised they were at fault, but House took more than his fair share of blame anyway.

@@Artix902 And the two of them play off each other very well both in general conflict and when diagnosing patients, the other characters just add information while Chase and House lead to actual conclusions more often than not.

If I'm being honest I think Foreman ended up the most like house

Even in chase's diagnosis it shows that he cares, usually when house does a diagnosis he plays around, talks about multiple symptoms, shoots down possible ideas, and then finds out the idea. But since he knew and cared for chase and how scared he was of him physically turning into like him. His diagnosis was very direct, no beat around the bush, just THIS IS THE DIAGNOSIS.

House almost always cares. His eyes say it all but his words make people not look in his eyes.

His actions with the prank led to Chase's defiance and therefore got him stabbed, he realizes then the exact gravity of his actions when Chase responds the same way House himself would have. They have an understanding, but his little Wombat will never be the same.

Which in the end is meaningless, because neither of them take it to heart. Chase deflects the sincere moment with his "anything else?", and House seizes the moment and drops it with "nope".

Chase didn't need an apology - he knew they were both at fault before he could wiggle his toes. He needed House to go before his physical system overwhelmed him the way his emotional system was already doing: Aussies are amassing but we can only stop one kind of breakdown at a time, so Hoyse *had* to go..🥹

@Lowkey Loki I don't think anyone really knows someone exactly like House. He's a character that's dialed up so far beyond 11 that he just couldn't exist. He's better seen as caricature lens though which to see humanity. It that sense, he really just represents a brilliant misanthrope with a heart of gold mixed with a punk rock moral philosopher. He loves the good that people can do, but he doesn't trust that people will do it. He laments our moral failings, but he punishes himself even harder for his own. He hates artifice, societal archetypes, unearned power and anything else that stinks of BS and (mostly speaking) the only time he manipulates someone is to try to teach them the allegory of the cave- hoping that they'll snap out of their programming. Of course, sometimes he manipulates them because he's just playing practical jokes ( and because the writing quality vacillates between episodes). But I doubt you know a "House". I think you probably just know people who are gripers.

NO, he's bitter because he's in constant physical and mental pain and because he's lonely. What you suggested is some melodramatic simplistic BS and shows that you are naive as hell. House's act is not a burden on him whatsoever, it's just a game for him. He's more complex and self-reliant than you suggested AND it's not some cheesy teen drama.

@yevgeniyaleshchenko849 He likes to play games because he's whismical, and a teacher at heart. But when he's in a bad place, he makes those games cruel and vindictive. His character is entirely self reliant, and that's part of his problem. He refuses to accept help because he refuses to risk disappointment. It is a mask. He avoids people and he's lonely because of it, and sometimes he forgets to lie to himself, and remembers he can actually like people.

"Everybody likes you" to Cameron. The first thing that popped to my mind, there're probably better examples.

Well, that's what they were going for with scenes/interactions like this.

The next episode that follows, "Chase", is an extraordinary study of both House and Chase...and you see the playboy routine was Chase masking the pain of losing Cameron and realizing that it was ALWAYS him "chasing" her...she never really pursued him. Chase in effect persuaded her to date him, even to marry him.

Not only that the way he hides his British Accent is amazing! If you hear him talk in his native tongue you stand there with your mouth open, his accent is thick!

Great comedy is often extracted from dark, morbid places which many are afraid to voice openly. It's why comedians like Stephen Merchant, Robin Williams, Steve Carrell, Jim Carrey, and Hugh Laurie are so good in dramatic roles, as they recognise and extract the dark, morbidness of life, but with a twist of comedic irony. Great drama is like great comedy but in a slightly different context and without the punchline.

I don't think it was disappointment. And chase understood the gravity of what he said. But for House, along with a lot of other men, anger is an easier emotion to deal with than guilt or fear or helplessness.

@@swimfast724 anger is easier to deal with because we have more of it, we feel less in general, but anger is a feeling that every human has. Most people dont have hobbies that they can funnel feelings into, which is sad.

Foreman becoming the new Cuddy was just a great transition - not because it's where he's meant to be, but because there wasn't anybody better for the position. There's a certain feeling Foreman might blow that hospital into oblivion one day, the same way Cuddy blew her life into oblivion in the same position. Foreman doesn't have a life anymore to blow up, so it'll be the hospital someday - and even Cuddy didn't care. He might run it well for 20 years but one day.... he'll blow it up doing the right thing. It's like knowing there's a ticking clock, except that clock will save a lot of lives when it stops - and breaks forever. What a great show.

I always suspected someone else would succeed House, to be honest. Foreman played a role identical to Cuddy. He would question House to his face, then do exactly what House had said behind his back.

At least He remembered to cover His feet again afterwards :P perhaps the initial list of tests was longer in His head.

That is actually a great character moment, he dropped his stiff bureaucrat persona and became a Doctor again, even if it was just for a moment.

Chase wanted to do a skin biopsy of the teacher to test Adams' theory about strep, but the teacher had a steroid-induced psychotic break when he saw Adams prepping the syringe, grabbed the scalpel Chase was going to use for the biopsy, and lunged at Adams with it. Chase pulled him away from her and they fought, then the patient stabbed Chase with the scalpel. Watch the "Keeping Chase Alive" clip on this same channel and you'll see the whole thing. It was actually really well-done.

He's not really a villain

He is more of an Antagonist, he isn't even he is just in the protagonist's (house) way. He is by no means a bad person.

Yeah, I was confused by this guy - he starts off by introducing himself as a neurologist, and then goes on to sound more like one of those "have you been injured in an accident at work that wasn't your fault?" lawyers. That's not neurology, mate!

Plus he was surrounded by some powerful support characters to make thing interesting, especially Wilson. Chase doesn't have an equivalent of Wilson, neither does he have any other support character who developed him as a person in the show.

@@ManOfParody I'm pretty sure there were a few episodes between this one and the time house faked his death where he solves a couple of cases. If he had lost his license these cases could not have been solved, and neither could house have helped Wilson at all because if house had lost his license due to chase he'd have to go back to jail. That means all through Wilson's diagnosis period as well as his death, house would have to be in prison. Thus chase really did help out house not only in his career but also with probably the most important thing house could do for his best friend. Calling someone an idiot only works when you're not one yourself.

Season 8 had some great moments and this ones in this video are superb. The episode entitled "Chase" ranks right up there with "Help Me" because the episode was such a treatise on House and Chase.
