Housebarn ruin in northern Spain becomes family reunion home

About 15 years ago, Antonio Gutiérrez took a wrong turn and ended up in the mountains of Cantabria surrounded by cabins, or more specifically by cabaña pasiega. Beginning in the 16th century these "housebarns" were built in the region's high valleys to house livestock on the ground floor and people or hay on the floor above.
Enamored with the lush greenery and mountain valleys and paths (reminding him almost exactly of a favorite childhood painting), Antonio, and his wife, purchased a rundown cabaña and spent the next few years turning it into their family retreat.
The building's only occupants when they bought it were a pony and a few cows and goats and a collapsing roof meant it was on the verge of slipping into ruin, like the homes next door. The couple wanted to restore the home to be as authentic as possible so they hired local artisan and builder, Jose Manuel, who also happened to be the son of the previous owner. He added a new roof, cleaned up the limestone rock walls and added new wood flooring between floors.
The original building was actually two cabañas with a shared wall so they cut holes between the two and created one big family home large enough to house extended family and guests. The interior was furnished with castoffs they found in the streets of Madrid and donated by family and guests.

My nan had a marble sink in the laundry growing up, I remember saying to her that it was a bit fancy for a farm house in rural Victoria Australia in the early 1900’s, but she reminded me that they didn’t have electricity for a fridge and marble was cool enough to store their meat in/on, also the laundry was built on the cool side of the house usually. Her father was stationed in Egypt in WW1 and learnt so many local building techniques. He built their home out of mudbrick when he came back and was ridiculed by local farmers that it would be washed away after the first rain, it still stands today almost 100yo. She was very proud of his achievement.

Its true that I haven't been to Europe, but only England for a much restricted visit at a college, so I didn't see a lot as a starving student. But I have seen many videos about Europe and I have to say that there is one thing I really don't like: so many houses are built right on the road. With no front yard and all the noise from traffic coming right into the living room and surely making sleeping an iffy proposition. In America we have a little bit of yard before the street, giving the house a little more quiet and privacy and the children a little bit of yard to play in. Of course, if you wanted to have a little restaurant or coffee shop right on the road to cast your net, then okay, but it seems so strange for a living space. I always wondered why? Was there a reason to build right on the road?

My maternal grandparents' summer house was one of the last places where you could just relax, just outside cell phone reception. It was peaceful, and my soul still rests when I think of that place. My late paternal great-grandmother converted a stone housebarn on the outskirts of a tiny village in Lot-et-Garonne, France, into her home in the 1980's. Her kitchen used to be a pig sty. It was a wonderful place, and in my mind's eye, it's still an ideal rural retreat. The shape of the old stone house informed her room layout, and the kitchen and dining area was one large continuous space, with a long dining table built from an old oak that fell on the road leading to her house. She modeled her garden after a medieval description of the Garden of Eden, and was only a couple of plants short of having it completed when age finally forced her to sell up and move closer to family in Scandinavia. What was before informs our choices for what we do, if we just listen to our elders and let their lifestyle inspire us.

The area reminds me of Ireland where I was born and raised until I was 6 years old. The comment he made regarding the silence, "there was a penetrating silence, what was beyond the darkens" that is exactly how I remember the wilds of Connemara as a child, I was terrified of the darkness, the wind and the one lone tree outside my bedroom window. Of course it didn't help that my grandmother would tell me the wind howling was the banshee trying to get in the house, she was very religious and superstitious.

What you are writing is so relatable for me. My whole life is a back and forth between being surrounded by millions of people (and their infrastructure) and then moving to really remote places. It might be age or I don't know what, but the more time goes by, the more I prefer the isolated places. Yet still, the social connections are what make the difference! Remote places does not mean necessary NO SOCIAL LIFE and for me it's actually quite the contrast to be honest. In the more remote places I lived and tend to go back to, I usually have much deeper human connections, friendships and social life than in crowded metropolitan areas. Life is so much slower and at least for me has a lot more meaning attached to it.

Thank you Kirsten, you have enriched my life with your videos. I travel and dream through them. I have never paid attention to Northern Spain but now I am love with it and dream of going there. I particularly love that you are filming in the rain. I love rain, finding it beautiful, nurturing, and healing, so filming in this way allows me to experience the atmosphere that envelops this place.

Thank you for showing us this. I would like much more detail, though, so as to help others trying a similar project. For instance: building permits (is the cabaña protected heritage, were they allowed or not to open bigger windows?, etc.); is there running water and a greywater system? Have they thought about insulation of walls, roof, floor? What would they change or improve, after the experience of living for some time in the cabaña. The type of information someone that builds would like and need to know. I hope that you consider this for future videos. Thank you!

Just looking at this this is one of my two perfect locations. Mountains, valleys, glens, folds in the land, streams that rage in spring, what could be better than that? Well, after the part of my childhood that was spent in the mountains my parents moved to the Outback for work and ever since the desert has spoken to me in weird ways.
