I think because she explains so well and they look so good it gives you confidence lol I had the same thoughts and this is where they "stemmed from" for me! Pun intended 😉
It's been my experience that ferns like epsom salt. I use about a tablespoon per gallon of water when watering mine. The magnesium really helps them to stay green. This also works on hostas.
I just wanted to thank you again for your videos! I work in the plant section in Bunnings Australia (a big home improvement type store) and I always refer people to your videos for more information! You have taught me so much and I'm so grateful!
My grandmother taught me if I had an insect on my plants that I could take them out of their pots remove all the soil. Wash them with dish soap then rinser them. Wash and scrub their pots really well. Then repot them. I started doing this when I couldn't afford insecticides. And it really works.
Sharon Howle, that's an old time remedy back where I grew up in VA, too! There's another lady on RU-vid who does that to nearly every new plant that she takes home. I hadn't thought of it in many years until she and now you mentioned doing it! Thanks for the memory & tip! 🌾💜
I have had success using a hydro spike for my boston fern.😊 I also mist the plant daily. I didn't know there was a "Chrissy Fern" though! My family call me Chrissy and I definitely want one now!😁💚 I enjoy these videos...great content, and Benjamin is a joy to see!😊
Hi, Laura. I keep a pot with an asparagus fern, a small maidenhair fern and a bird's nest fern. I potted them in a terra cotta pot, then placed that in a larger plastic pot (ceramic would have been too heavy as I have it hanging). I filled the space between the pots with preserved moss, and put 2 ceramic plant watering spikes in the space between the pots, and one in the middle. The 3 capillary tubes go into a nearby 1-quart Mason jar which I fill about every 2 weeks. The moss stays moist all the time, as does the soil, but never wet. I never water the pot, and they have grown beautifully through the hot summer and cooler fall and winter. I use the same watering stakes in my big Boston fern, also hanging. I created a wire cage for the Mason jar and attached it to the bottom of the macrame hanger. The fern currently has 9 fronds growing, and it's mid-February! Thanks for tip about grooming - I've been pulling off the occasional brown leaves but the partially bare branches aren't so attractive. Hope to see you at the Northwest Flower and Garden Festival on Wednesday.
I totally "missed" the mark when you said you "mist" your plants. I was like, "Dang! How long are all of these garden show trips since you "missed" your plants?" Palm meet face.
I love boston ferns, but always kill them, I too learn everytime I kill a plant and will try to grow one again, I always learn so much from all your videos and really enjoy all of the tips and tricks. Thank you so much and see you in your next video, Bye for now.
I have a blue star fern and I just give it maybe a 30 second shower every day or so! I end up hardly ever actually watering because it replicates that rainforest climate, like he’s getting rained on everyday ☺️
Thats awesome! I've always loved plants and animals since as long as I can remember. They give off positive energy, tgats probably why you love them so much.
Hi Laura, this video could not have come at a better time for me. I just started growing plants indoors for air quality and am in love with ferns so I have bought a few. My maiden hair is not happy but I know they’re little divas. The thing I wanted to ask is most of these ferns are growing in what appears to be peat, or something similar. When I repot them should I try to get most of the original substrate off the roots before I plant into organic potting mix?
I was waiting for you to mention that quite a few of them are epiphytes. I always make sure to use a really well draining soil mix with both perlite and orchid bark to make sure the don't get root rot. The ones that are epiphytes don't really mind bright light since they grow so high up in the trees in the rainforest. If I'm not misstaken the epiphyte ferns are the epiphytes that grow at the highest of orchids, bromeliads and ferns.
Hi Laura. I love your videos. Youv'e given me many great ideas for planting outside. I had ferns in the past with no success but after watching this video I;m ready to give them another try. I was wondering if you could give so tips and clues about araila's. I have 3 of them and I love them. Some care and pruning tips would be nice. Thank you.
Oh man, so jealous that you have so many windows and space by then to keep all this beautiful plants. On the other hand, it might be a blessing because mom knows no limit when it comes to plants 😄😉 Great info as always, and then the #1 ......Benjamin 😍🌞 Thanks Laura, love seeing your little love, hugs to the 3 of you.🌱💜🌱
Thx for the info about ferns and toxicity. Plant buyers need to know this. I almost poisoned my rescued cat from two plants I bought! Now I research before buying. Edit: my cat looooves my ferns 🥰
Great, informative video as always! I do not have any ferns at this time but now plan to try them! Benjamin is always fun to see in the videos.....Thanks so much Laura
I grow lots of ferns where I live in Australia, many of the ferns seen in this video are native to areas close by me. Ferns are very misunderstood as house plants, they honestly can take quite a lot of direct sun (2-3 hours) as long as they aren’t ever allowed to dry out. You really want to give them as much bright light as possible, and keep big saucers under them filled with water (it’s pretty hard to get fern roots to rot). Birds nests are definitely the most hardy variety, and I wonder what Laura plans to do with hers once they reach the 2+ meter width of maturity like the ones in my garden. I’d love to see a video on some American ferns in your garden, although I haven’t spotted any in past videos. Many of the deciduous ferns native to the us and Europe don’t grow as well in Australia, so I’d love to learn more about them.
Hi Laura! Keep in mind that some of these houseplant ferns do great outside as well depending on where you live. I happen to live near the California/Oregon border on the coast where it constantly rains and my ferns were doing terrible inside. I put my rabbits foot, mother fern, and birds nest fern outside and they are doing amazing!
Love ferns indoor and outdoor hardy ferns. I do mostly shade gardening. my favorite indoor variety is the rabbits foot fern. It is about 10 years old. Would love to share a picture but I don't know how to on RU-vid.
Neat! I just bought a little rabbit's foot 4 days ago! I love it because right now it looks like a tarantula. Can you give me any advice on how to care for it? (I've done some research but it's always helpful to talk to actual people about it) If you get yourself a free Imgur account you can upload pictures to it & simply copy the link & paste it in a comment to show it off.
Tess of the Bells. I give mine a sip of water twice a week. It Sits near a north facing window. Receives bright light but no sun and I only fertilize it twice a year with epsoma liquid plant food that is for indoor plants
I wanted to ask about the rabbit foot ferns & here we already have a conversation going! I've had several & have killed them all within a month. Can't seem to get it right for them.
Great information! Good to see sweet Benjamin! Question for you Laura...would you be able to tell me what brand of mulch you use outside in your beds? Thank you!
I recently stopped using Espoma (seed mix), because, for the 2nd. year in a row, I've found skinny, little, millipede like critters crawling around in them once the plant starts growing. Anyone else have that issue? I've since switched to a sterile seed mix. Do love ferns, both inside & out. However, inside, I've also had humidity problems. Will try a few of your suggestions & hopefully they will thrive.
Regina L. There’s a link in the info section. It’s for the company that makes the stone pots and you can find a store near you from the menu. I love them too!
Stag horns ? Ya didnt talk about them tho one was sitting on you counter = ( Also when my son first started walking in his walker I took him around to all of my plants and showed him them an helped him feel each one then told him they were mine and not to touch ? He never did Success ! lol
Unrelated.....what would would happen if I kept my succulents under a 24 hour grow light, 'cause I have mine under grow lights for at least 12 hours and they are still stretching!.....I wonder if those "purple" grow light are stronger than the white ones?
I am curious how to find out when the growing period for plants are.. You mentioned that you're in zone 5. I'm in a zone 8 and I will continue to google search for the seasons of plant growth, but where can I find this info?
I will say it for experience: nevee put a fern in a bathroom! Yes water moves, put you also often open the windows. And ferns don't like temperature to change that often.
Hey! Loved the video as always; big fan! I though you may find it interesting to know that I live in New Delhi, and have the most hardy Boston fern outside our kitchen... It deals with 110 F temps through the summer, with very low humidity and looks great! Plants are more resilient than we give them credit for sometimes :)
I took out my boston fern in a month back in full sun to trim dried leafs. I was barely in sun for 2 minutes and it literally damaged the whole plants. Every since leaf got burned beyond repair. Not sure if I should keep it anymore or get another one.
You can cut it back, fertilize, and put it in the shade. It will take a while, but will come back. Meanwhile I would get a new one since every time you look at the sad one you will think bad words. Lots of luck ! ✌🏻❤
@@diannenaworensky6698 Thank you, I'll do that. It was in my washroom and just yesterday i shifted it outside in shade. It was getting too depressing to see it. 😂
Hi Laura, update on my Maidenhair Fern: it's been doing great except for one week a few weeks ago where the weather was disgustingly humid, I completely forgot to open up and air out my indoor greenhouse and, so I found five mushrooms growing on the top of my Fern's soil lol !! I was able to get rid of them by changing the soil and it's doing great again!!💕🥰🙏🏼 Hi Laura came back because I'm repotting my Maidenhair Fern and wanted to do it right!! Unfortunately, my Rabbit's foot fern died but my Maidenhair is doing beautifully!! I keep mine in an indoor, plastic covered greenhouse and I mist it once a day!! I water it every 5 days!! And I open the flap every day for about an hour or two, and use a fan to air out the greenhouses to avoid fungus gnats!! I absolutely LOVE all ferns!!❤️❤️❤️
I loved when you said: "Every time I killed one I learn a little bit more..." lol. Is amazing the honesty and naturallity you put into your videos and I thank you for that. No poses or pretending to know it all. I trust your advise and experiences>. Hugs from Calgary AB. Canada
Hi Laura, I have a healthy fern that has lots of unsightly stringy growth. Please let me know if it’s ok to cut them off. Thanks. Love your RU-vid channel.🌿
i was at our local nursery/seeds company at the beginning of April 2019 - not long after watching this video and a couple other fern related video by Garden Answer - and they happened to have some selections of fern... so i bought 3 babies in different varieties (maidenhair, asparagus, and staghorn, i think) and tested them out in - for the lack of better description - a fidget spinner shaped container that houses all three plantlets together. It's a pretty cool looking pot with all the different shades, shapes and textures of the leaves! :) - The ferns live on my desk in the office with lots indirect sunlight (large west facing windows and lots white surfaces the light could bounce off. - I putted a layer of pea gravel in the outer decorative pot and kept them wet like Laura did here - only required to top off the water every other day (for this particular set up and environment). - Also watered them between 5-6 day intervals (it has only just been three weeks since i got them), again like Laura said here, whenever they feels kinda "less wet" or individual pots became lighter in weight. - I didn't mist them for the two weeks cuz I couldn't find a good sprayer that's not plastic thru and thru - selfish, i know. The day i gave up looking in local stores and brought one on Amazon, i walked into a random hardware store and found them standing on the shelf at half the price i paid for online... wait, i had a point... So the first two weeks without misting they seems to be doing just fine. The moisture coming from the bottom definitely helped, but I've been misting them this week, about once or twice a day, and they look happy too. - Because almost everyone at our office has gotten a few plants on our desks, from snake plants, ribbon plants, Chinese money plants, purple (or maroon) shamrock, jade plants, pathos, to zz plants, just to name a few i could recognize and call out their names, there are definitely fungus gnats in and around. For those of you who may not know what I'm talking about, it's a tiny little insects that likes to fly around take a deep dive at your coffee or soup... It's not a huge issue (yet) and we do have those yellow stickies here and there to catch them, so i haven't gotten to a point where i need to worry about repotting anything or getting some insecticides to hold the fort - can't say that about the plants at my house... I stopped by the nursery again today and my fern definitely putted on more growth than their siblings sitting under the store grow lights - given that the nursery has way more things to attend to and i have 3+5 (other existing plants on my desk), i must have done something right by following those rules, hence long post sharing it here. Long explanation, short (?) conclusion: *Laura and Aaron,* and any family members/friends that helps you to do what you do, thank you!! I really do appreciate what you guys do everyday and that affects my life on so many levels. I love my tenny tiny green oasis at work and my growing search for Eden at home. Bless you for always being so smiley, funny, adventurous, brave, artistic, and positive - you pass on much more than just knowledge and experience of greeneries. All my love.
I recently purchased a button fern and have it in bright but not indirect light. The ends are turning brown am I not watering enough? Thank you for always inspiring me!
Thanks for this video, I only wish I had more room for plants in my small single-wide. I have 3 plants, one is a Christmas Cactus, one a pony tail palm (tiny) and the other is a Peace Lily. Years past I had upwards to 30 different house plants and I love them. Love of plants grew into a full blown nursery. Can't wait to get outside and play! Loved seeing Benjamin at the end!
I love your videos!!! Could you do one on how to repot (split and propagate) a rabbit foot fern? I love mine, but am not sure how to put the rhizome into the dirt for an optimal looking final plant! Thanks so much!
I have a 3 fern plants that I found in a Wal-mart garden center around 8 yrs. ago. I planted them in my shade garden and they have come back every year but they have not increased in size all that much. I have never found them again and needed to know if you have ever planted an outdoor fern and if so did it grow to your satisfaction?
