Today we veer from our positive nature and go slightly negative by discussing popular houseplants that I am not a fan of! All in good fun, I’d love to hear from you which popular plants you couldn’t care less about yourselves. Thanks for watching!
Big thanks to Aaron Apsley @apsley_watercolor for the photos of the obliqua, cuprea, and Silver Dragon!

People ask me, "Why do you like plants so much?" And I say, "I have plants from the Amazon, Africa and South East Asia. They put up with drought, monsoons - pretty much every condition you can think of. They deal with pests of all sizes and have to deal with everything Mother Nature throws at them.....AND YET...if I water them on a Wednesday instead of a Thursday, they fucking die. If I move them an inch to the left. They fucking die." Basically what I'm saying is that, I hate all plants...but I keep buying them! And try my hardest to keep these little bastards alive!

@amunetamun-ra7947
@amunetamun-ra7947 4 года назад
They need as much light as possible, (south facing window) so if you don't have that and can't supplement with a grow light many of them with start to etiolate and look a little crappy although some like aloe vera, sanseveria and rhipsalis can take lower light. They need incredibly well draining soil, 70% perlite some can even live in entirely pumice or an equivalent gritty mix and lastly they like lots of neglect. I love my succulent and cacti collection and have been appreciating them more and more this spring as everything else in my house is so demanding. My succulent collection is in a room I don't spend a lot of time in and I tend to forget about them but they continue to thrive on my neglect. I water them maybe once every 3-4 weeks. They could do with a little more in summer but they will survive, they'll just get shrivelled and are usually revived quite easily. They need way less water in winter, almost none for cacti. They come in such a huge range of interesting shapes, it might be worth another go at some point given the right light and soil.

One of my very first plants was a pretty large fiddle feaf fig and it is still going strong in my bedroom and putting out big new leaves. Now, on the other hand, after I ignored it and cared for the newbie plants coming into my collection... guess what! She starts blooming and craving attention 😂 Like I said, they're drama queens.

I slightly disagree with some of his “opinions” becouse they are based in that he cant keep alive the plant,take the ficus benjamina for example ,he has lost leaves an most surely died,but only becouse its a plant that LOVES direct sunligh,mine is in my balcony(west facing)and it thrives ..its also a plant you should proon ,like roses... so basing an opinion in not being informed of the care ,or triying to make it grow somewhere it shouldnt ,I dont think that gives the right to say its not a good plant .Will still keep watching his videos ,and have learned a lot from him..but many coments on this video,are clearly based on plats he has killed due to not caring for them correctly 😩❤️

Hey, everyone has his/her plants that one does not like. I have Opuntias and don't like them for the same reason you don't like them. Still, they're a great pest deterrent in my front yard, and I do like the blooms. I also hear you on the Ficus set: I have the variegated Ficus Benjamina -that someone threw away- and thankfully, I was able to wrap it in plastic to get it home and it sits above my humidifier, and loves where it is. Nevertheless, if there was an overrated plant that I don't like, it is the Alpheandra squarosa - the Zebra plant! Buy cut flowers instead! Thank you, Nick!

A nice spray down on the leaves and top of soil with diluted solution of neem oil ($9 at Lowe's) and dishsoap (just make sure it doesn't contain bleach, dawn will do!) when you purchase the plant should keep the worst at bay, as well as letting the top of the soil dry out (try bottom watering) so the little buggers can't multiply.

It's so interesting how some plants just take to the conditions you provide and give you no troubles whether or not they are hard plants to grow and then others will hate you no matter what you do! I have a watermelon peperomia that has been dying since the day I bought it almost three years ago. No matter what conditions I give it, it'll perk up a little bit and then spiral down again. It's down to two leaves and I have one other healthy least hopefully propagating in water but that has never worked for me before. Maybe I should have thrown it out before now, but I don't like giving up on plants! People say it's so easy to care for and grow and propagate, but I'm doing everything as by the books as I can and it still hates me!

I just can't justify it because of all the genetic degradation from propagating the same plants over and over and the highrisk or reverting that those things have. If the super colorful variegation was a sure thing for the life the the plant it would make a little more sense to me. On a good specimen all those colors can look beautiful and really unique, but considering the high chances of degradation, reverting to all green, or turning all pink and therefore no chlorophyll, it's literally not worth the high price tag. I just don't think most of the people paying this prices understand the problems inherent in that plant. I'll take my chances and wait to see if a better, more stable version can be tissue cultured en masse and get one for cheap or maybe trade for something else in my collection, but I have better, more rare plants to spend my money on!

I have used the most budget potting mix available, never fertilised it, give it about one or two cups of water a week and it gets a moderate amount of indirect sunlight in the corner of a room away from windows. Yet it keeps growing and putting out lush new leaves. I even left it outside for a month over summer while I was travelling and it survived (got a bit of shock and browning on the edges of a couple of leaves but bounced back very quickly). I absolutely love this plant! By far the easiest non-cactus plant that I've ever looked after.

So after trying all ways to keep it alive, I chopped it down and put it outside because I couldn't stand looking at it die a slow death. I put it on my front porch (I live in a warm climate state) and within months the little thing started to revive and it's now about 3ft tall with healthy looking leaves. I still don't pay much attention to it and water it when I remember. I guess it realized the next step would be in the trash and it showed me a thing or two.

nickasarbata yes! I have a dwarf flf, it’s put out one leaf in the last year and that’s about it, it just exists. I wanted one so bad when I got it, now I pretty much ignore it until it’s leaves start to droop

Lol mine only started growing new leaves after sticking it under a grow light. It definitely lost a bunch of leaves when I first started figuring it out but with the grow light, I just have to remember to water and fertilize it out and it does fine

I literally just bought a Calathea Ornata the other day. It was sooooo pretty I just had to. Never had one before, so hoping it does well for me. 🤞🏻 I bought a Fiddle Leaf Fig a few weeks ago(never had one of those either), and so far it’s had new growth and looks good. Hearing you talk of $100+ plants makes my jaw drop. I started my plant journey about 4-5 years ago when I found a few Dracaena’s on clearance for $5 and under. I didn’t kill them, so I kept buying more. Aside from propagating what I already have, I still regularly search the clearance section, or buy smaller plants. Just bought 9-10 new plants today🤦🏼‍♀️ one being the paddle shaped type of cactus. My daughter has a cactus and succulent collection and she is in love with it. I’m new to this channel, but have a request(if you haven’t already done it). Can you do a video on your top 5 house plants?

Ahh, I agree with you on all of these except the alocasia! I live in Texas where it's very humid, so we grow them outside and I didn't even know the scientific name for this plant (I only knew it as elephant ears), but I love the tropical look and feel, and they grow so well outside!

Same! I have jumbo elephant ears in my yard 5 feet tall and I love them. They make my yard look so exotic and are fun to smack and drum on.

I'm very envious right now, I've killed 2 or 3 polly and then I gave up. In my case they hated my house, they were happy outside but in the fall when I had to put them inside they lost all the leaves and then they started again in spring until they didn't anymore

Literally just found out the hard way about the opuntia. I started growing a “spineless one” and let me tell you it HAS spines. Little horrid ones like fiberglass. Ugg. It fell over on my bed and i had invisible spines all over my comforter. Never again.

I just bought one a few days ago. The nursery stuck it on a shelf while I ran to their restroom, but it fell over and broke half a paddle off. So, without thinking, I grabbed the paddle with my bare hands. Hey, I paid for that paddle! And then I paid by picking little needle hairs out of my fingers for the rest of the day.

Wow, that's one of the easiest plants for me. We even had one that was neglected and looked completely brown, dry, and dead, but we figured--why not try watering it? And it came back. We started calling it the Lazareth plant. If it's droopy & you've been watering it, stop watering for a while. If you haven't been watering it, give it a drink & it perks back up within an hour or two. (At least in my experience.) You can check the soil to see if it needs watering by sticking your finger down in the soil 1 or 2 inches. If it's wet, wait. And if it's dry go ahead and water. Make sure it has good drainage. You can also check to see if there are roots growing out of the bottom. If there are, you can either trim the roots (if you like the size & don't want it to get bigger), or you can split the plant & put them into multiple pots, or you can put the whole thing into a bigger pot. They like indirect light. In a window, or by glass doors that get a lot of indirect light has been a good spot. Another thing you can do for them is to wipe the leaves off with a damp cloth to remove dust from the air & pollen (or whatever it is) if it's flowering. Sometimes they are grown in water, but I think they do better in potting soil. (I don't have any experience with other mediums.) Good luck, to you guys!
