"Shokunin", which means "craftsmen" or "Meister", is a commonly used word for those who perfect their field of expertise, whether it's a sushi chef, traditional arts maker, furniture maker, etc. The Shokunins are one of the most respected types of people in Japan, definitely much more respected than politicians XD

It's another world. Why don't we value our few remaining master craftsmen like this in the West? The traditions and methods are being lost. It's so sad. This video is beautiful. I'd happily watch an hour on each of the crafts featured.

I love how the Japanese seek perfection but I wish they would seek perfection in modern technologies like making the perfect robot or the perfect smartphone

$1000 for a brush? i'll stick to the cheap ones on ebay

I see why you would say that as 1,000 dollars a brush isn't feasible for a lot of people including myself. But the point of the video was to show the artisans practice a craft that is thousands of years old and how they still do it today. Isn't it crazy that there was a time when most things were made by people who had studied their whole lives to make them?

the types of people who purchase those kinds of expensive brushes are expert calligraphers who require the perfect brush for themselves. each brush is custom made to suit the client
