How 8 Scenes Were Filmed To Look Like One Take | Movies Insider

Many movies have scenes shot to look like one long take. To do this, filmmakers will shoot a scene in long, unedited segments and then stitch them together. Action movies like “Atomic Blonde” will do this by having actors run in front of the camera to hide the cuts. For a one-take action sequence in Netflix’s “Extraction,” director Sam Hargrave had to strap himself to the roof of a vehicle and then quickly run off in order to get an uninterrupted shot of Chris Hemsworth. One-take scenes can help show the passage of time, like when Showtime needed to film a montage that took place over the course of five years in “Kidding.” Meanwhile, the Oscar winners “Birdman” and “1917” kept the one-take illusion going for their entire running times. In order to cover a lot of ground, both these movies traveled light: they relied on small handheld cameras as well as natural light in place of large light kits.

It's sometimes surprising how this type of revelation doesn't ruin the movies, but enhances the experience by making the viewer realis the complexity in each shot.

Michael Bay is one of the people who mostly delivers with his action scenes tho lmao. This advice should go to the other average Hollywood blockbusters instead such as the MCU, or any director who isn't proficient at shooting action. They always cover up lacking fight choreography with the horrible shaky cam and shitty editing with cuts every second

I think the first film to look as though it was all captured in a single shot was Alfred Hitchcock's “Rope" (1948). Great film. From what I have read, the only times they stopped the camera was when they had to load fresh film (every 20-30 minutes, if I remember correctly). One way that they hid the edits was by panning across someone's back.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople has an entirely in-camera oner that used body doubles. When I watched it I was sure it must have been a digital stitch-up, but it was a genuine single one-take.
