A board game table has been the single best purchase I've ever made in the hobby to date. While expensive, it enables me to game more which ultimately means it's better than any board game I've ever bought. In this video I'll briefly cover the value of a game table, where I got my table from and some ways that it can really truly benefit your ability to play games....and yes, 7th Continent is still set up underneath that table.

Couldn't agree more! I made one as I couldn't justify the immense cost of buying one. I made a video about it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-devjNU0Yacg.html Great video as usual man. That table with a table is genius. I had a similar incident when my cousin was showing me her cabin. She pulled a rug away and opened the trapdoor leading to the basement, and I said, "That's where you hide the bodies." She laughed, but was a bit weirded out that that was my first thought.

I got a Game Topper system and I love it. I keep it set up permanently in the game room but can disassemble it quickly and move it easily if need be. Cheaper than a full gaming table with all the benefits. Any gaming table solution is a must for those who game a lot.

Yes, Game Toppers are awesome! They're a great solution at the lower end of the cost spectrum when you have a decent support table to put it on. I just got one a few weeks ago, put it on an older wooden kitchen table, and it's solid as a rock!
@coasteray1
@coasteray1 Год назад
Yeah, I have a Game Topper as well. I adore it. It makes me want to play a game on it, not on a boring plain wood surface. It’s just the basic Standard Holmes (36” x 72” play area), but it’s solid, can be taken apart and moved to wherever you want to take it, like I do when we go to a rental house at the Oregon coast. Great ocean views while playing a few games along the way. I love the accessories and mats, too:). I also must say that the idea of a dedicated wood dining/gaming table is great. I can’t do that due to the cost and the not-so-convenient size of my dining area in relation to the attached living room. So much of the decision-making about this subject is really about the obvious financial aspects and then your house configuration. However, no matter which way you go, you can’t go wrong. Hey, even make your own! I’ve toyed with that idea, just for the fun of it, and the fact that you made it with your own hands. Great satisfaction there. Thanks for the neat video, Alex.

What you said towards the end holds true for many hobbies, I feel in a lot of hobbies people obsess over the equipment more than they’re actually pursuing the hobby. Talking more about cameras and lenses than actually taking photos, buying all the games in steam summer sale but not playing them and then of course boardgames. I try to be a minimalist as much as possible, I declutter stuff I don’t need, I sell it or give it away, I try to own not too many times so I‘m flexible and don’t need a huge apartment. I’ve sold most of my games 2 years ago and I’m getting back into it now again and I’m scared it will escalate again. I wanna be as intentional with my purchases as possible and keep my collection small but great.

As ever a super informative video. Having just completely redecorated and moved around our living room, a suitably sized coffee table was a must to allow more and larger games to be played. A cheap £29 (I am in uk) IKEA Lack coffee table which is 118cm x 78cm has allowed us to have more family game time together, and to see in place how a larger coffee table would work without spending a lot at first. A gaming coffee table will definitely be a future purchase when the time comes to upgrade and funds allow. Look forward to your new videos each day. It's part of my wind down before bed each night.

This video almost sold me on a table. I have a copy of Aftermath set up on top of a couple boxes in the corner of my living room, and I could just imagine it on one of those sleeves instead. Finding people to play games with is the bigger issue for me. I live alone, and the rest of my apartment isn't suitable for company. Gotta clean up the mess. I also don't have too many people to invite over. The apartment managers are getting a game night started in the common area, and you made a really good case for them to get one (or two). My employer might also be interested in one for the sales floor at work.

Thanks for the video. I’ve been looking at table options for a while now. My biggest struggle is that I want one large enough to accommodate a 5-6 player game of Scythe with the extended board (my all time favorite game). Finding the right dimensions and sizing has been it’s own endeavor. I’ve been itching to host a large scale Rise of Fenris campaign play through, but had to hold off due to lack of table space and other responsibilities. A proper table would be great to assist in getting all-in Scythe to the table more often.

I have the Wood Robot Table of Ultimate Gaming Elite 4x6 table. We love having a game table and agree that it has so greatly added to our enjoyment. It has also made our home the place where my game group meets. I also have noticed how many modern games take up so much space. I do think a 3x5 table would have been the perfect size, we still like our big one. The next time we get a table, we will go with one of the amish made tables, more expensive, but also high end furniture quality, not a mix of particle board and thinner woods.

Let’s summarize this. Gaming table with secret storage and a garbage can nearby? Considering this, are you sure your wins are due to skill? Seriously though, I just repurposed our very used dining room table into a vaulted game table. [Wife got the new table she wanted and I got the gaming table. Absolutely win win!] I experienced the results you describe in your video. I get to play the legacy and campaign games that have collecting dust. I 100% agree. If you are a gamer, a table really becomes a necessity and not a nicety. Most epic games seem to abate between 2.5 and 5 hrs (with breaks setup & takedown). I got a Game Topper in 2017-ish and it has changed my gaming life at home. I have 6 kids and a very busy wife. It’s hard to play awesome games. In the past, I was always pressured to finish or stop a game in progress when it got ‘too late’. This was really hard for me, and limited when and what I could play. When I received my Game Topper, the first thing I noticed was I could stop playing and resume on another day, when everyone was ready and available! I don’t have gaming room, per day, but I can close the basement so my kids don’t disrupt the game. The Game Topper is now my dedicated gaming table and its awesome! We (my wife, 14 yr old daughter, and 11 yr old son- who won) just finished playing a game of TI4. It took us 3 days and lots of interruptions, but there was no pressure to finish or quit so we were able to stop and pickup where we left off! We finally finished playing on day 3.

This was a very good video. Funny it's about a table, but that 's a good question gamers might not be thinking about. Where or how do we play games? I don't have a table like that, so just play on a dining room table, and of course, if I'm we as a family is playing a game that is near lunch or dinner, we have to wrap things up and clear the table. Right now I'm renting a house in Lynchburg that has a half apartment downstairs with a large dining room table, so we play downstairs. And, yes we have left a game sitting there. Scythe (with Wind Gambit) was the game. It's really good, but can be too long.

My roommate doesn't play games so I don't actually find the "save" capacity of a gaming table useful for me. Most of my gaming at home is for the occasional game night when I invite people over and because I have very limited space in my apartment, I had purchased folding tables and chairs that I can stow away under my bed when not in use. Then came Game Toppers and it seemed like the perfect solution for a small space like mine for a luxury gaming experience. That said, while it improves my gameplay experiences when I have them, it doesn't have the benefit of helping me game more, so it is really more of a luxury piece. The best part of it are the cupholders for me. I've had too many excited (or drunk) players spill their drinks on my table and damage my games and the cupholders have, so far, prevented that from happening again.

If I had thought more clearly about it, I would have got a gaming table, but we just bought new furniture for the house like 2 years ago and it wasn't cheap so for now a gaming table isn't in the cards, but my wife and I are thinking about many ways to make getting games to the table easier. Since we have cats, I wonder if there is a game cover or anything that I could get or build to keep games like Gloomhaven setup but protected from the cats.

You might have just pushed me over. Like you, I have held this as a "someday" gaming luxury. However, your point about it being a value multiplier for expensive games I already own because I would be able to get/ keep them on the table more is a very good point. A lot of times I don't play a game because I know I won't be able to finish it and kids/pets/meals sort of get in the way of pausing a game. What made you land on uniquely-geek? I looked at their site and really like the multiple layers of the coffee table. However, just looking at your Cthulhu Death May Die (a game I am bringing to the table this weekend for the first time--if time allows) table state, I worry that it is too cramped. It looks like you barely have room. I also struggle to think I could lean over that for a long period of time. Besides kids, I have a hard time seeing other players playing from the non-couch side. Yet you do a really good sell of the layers and storage options.
@BoardGameCo
@BoardGameCo 4 года назад
Yes! I never thought of it that way until I had it. DMD in that smaller table is definitely a tight fit. It works but I like it much more in a bigger space. The good news is on larger games you can lay those extra components on the edges as well, but obviously not storing them there. UG was the best combination of price, quality and customization I could find. You can find cheaper, you can find better...but they hit that matrix for me.
@robertharvey5904
@robertharvey5904 4 года назад
@@BoardGameCo I am definitely looking at buying options now. I can't really tell from the angles you have. Do you other game "saves" just open or can they be stored below the lower section (i.e. covered)? It looks like you have one set on the carpet and the other on top of a storage area on the bottom and both are not covered. In my case that would be pet/kid disaster, but maybe you just had it that way for the video. If they can be covered, that alone might sell me on the coffee table option.

@kascally

As far as I can see you can't get knees under the table. This means constantly leaning forward, particularly for pieces on the far side of the board, and potential long term back problems. For pieces or cards on your own side of the board-with such a deeply recessed playing area-you have to reach down at an angle, and it probably means resting or rubbing your arm on that sharp internal edge. Doesn't seem like an ergonomic design.

Yes, for the coffee table we play in smaller spurts, 30-45 min at a time. For longer games I recommend a full gaming table.

3*4 in our case. We prefer the kitchen table overall, but the coffee table is a good place to retract to when the other table is occupied.

I have to play at one of these tables sometime. I always imagine that I would really dislike the border and having the game sit lower than it would on a normal table. I realize that this is because of storage but in my mind it makes manipulating items closer to the edge of the table uncomfortable. So the table would need to be bigger than normal to maybe counteract that. I don't know. I think unless I try it I will never get one. BTW there is a Kickstarter right now for a very cheap gaming table (I think 150$ or so) maybe take a look for the next roundup.

This is my concern with one. Even looking at this table, it doesn't seem to be able to house a bigger game. When you involve the board, player boards (if there are any), resources, etc, I feel like this space would get so cramped. Having to reach over a ledge to get to your stuff just seems like a pain. Probably the reason I have yet to buy one because of the insane price of some of them. I wouldn't be willing to drop a whole lot of money unless I really just needed a nice table that would double as a gaming table. Seems more convenient to just have a normal table and buy a good surface area of neoprene for game nights.

4x3 feet is a good range. Enough for larger games, not so large that you're dealing with a different table. Our coffee table is 4x3, our main table is much bigger.

Admittedly I would love a gaming table but unfortunately for it to be worthwhile several significant jobs would need to be completed first. While it can be a chore to get a game onto the table, my personal situation dictates the option simply isn't there at present. It certainly sounds as though the tables are proving worth their weight in gold for you and it was good to hear your thoughts and feedback on them.

@BoardGameCo
@BoardGameCo 4 года назад
Yes! Not a coincidence, I forgot to mention that. Ours was the first trestle table they did (second technically but the first was much more custom). One of the reasons I used them is we specifically wanted a trestle table, and that limits you down to a handful from all the main people. I liked their tables enough that I asked them if they can do Trestle (it wasn't listed on the site) and they did....they then named that new table The Radcliffe :)

I didn't need a top for my gaming table so I only had to spend $100 for a nice sturdy 4'x4' wooden table with metal folding legs (in case I need to move it). Much better for me than a fancy table costing thousands. not that there's anything wrong with the fancy tables; my solution won't work for everyone.

About 15 years ago I built a poker table. As my life and tastes changed, it turned out to be a good gaming table. It's a skosh too big and swallows some 'regular' games, but for table hogs (i.e. Brass or Here I stand, etc) there's plenty of room. TLDR: If costs are a consideration, building something practical isn't too difficult. I think mine cost about $250-$300 (back then) for all the components.

I also have a UG dining table from a couple years back. They are a local builder so it was awesome to be able to go over and see their models in person after work. Unfortunately mine uses a suction cup to remove one of the leaves. I'm envious of your push rod setup. I maintain a list of table manufacturers at BGG and would appreciate input if someone knows of a business I'm not listing. boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/229564/game-table-manufacturers There are tons of options and some variance in price out there. I would second your remark on the accessories that connect to the rail. I love my cup holders, but I find I won't use the card holders and bits tray. As you have to kind of lean back to see what's there. I wish UG had a rail on the inside of the vault like what Wyrmwood is doing with their modulars. That is far more useful and flexible.
@BoardGameCo
@BoardGameCo 3 года назад
Yes the inside rail is a great idea. For the suction cups we ended up getting those as well because on our dining room table we needed them for the other side. The push button is better for sure, they'll always be improving which is great for future buyers and perhaps ourselves down the road.
