Reading Starter Villain by John Scalzi was like Eating Cake for Dinner, thanks ‪@vintagesf‬ for the analogy. It was good while consuming it, but it left me intellectually malnourished...
So, this is my experience with Starter Villain. It’s a super easy read and a fun, if silly, book.
But, having finished it I was struck with a thought that my time spent reading it was no better than if I scrolled through TicTok for three hours. I guess not every book needs to have a meaningful message that will stay with you, but still, something was lacking here.
Books as pure escapism, and fun but with no literary merit or ideas. What do you think?

I usually like to learn something new when I ready but there are times in my life that I need my comfort book and then the only thing I want is just to feel better :))

That makes sense. Nothing wrong with a book that puts a smile on your face, even if it lacks other attributes. 👍 Thanks for the comment.

Great conversation on what a book should mean to you. I think as-long as it keeps you entertained while reading it’s still better than scrolling shirts

Great point, I agree. Thanks!

@@Thebookbunker 😂 I figured. Scrolling “shirts” is not that entertaining!

This is going to be my next read. Im just in the mood for a book I can read enjoy and then not worry about. Its not something I want all the time but it has its place. I feel the same way about books like Murder bot and event the Bobiverse books (really a lot of Taylors books). Some times I do just want dessert for dinner lol

Yes! I agree 100%; fun books like Starter Villain definitely have their place and at the right time can bring a smile to your face. 😃

For me this was roadkill by Dennis Taylor, I want more like it! The reviews online would make you think it's bad to have fun reading a book. 😂

I've only read Old Man's War by Scalzi and I liked it, a lot of his books don't sound appealing to me but maybe if I'm in the right mood like you said. Thanks Bart.

I was so excited for this book, especially because of the cover. I wanted more villainous cats. Very underwhelming unfortunately. Great review!

That’s exactly how I felt! The book was pleasant enough, but I also was hoping for more. Villainous cats would rule! Their role in this book was… a bit out of character. 😂

I’m bummed to hear this. I like Scalzi for the most part, but he does sometimes have interesting concepts that don’t quite reach their full potential.

Well, it’s not a bad book. It was a pleasant enough read. It’s just that there isn’t anything that will stay with me past the last page. I completely agree with you about not reaching full potential.

Funny I get more agitated at books that spend too much time building characters or describing, than ones that move briskly. Sounds bad but I can't stand when someone spends too musk time describing the smell of their former car, like a dank leather, crushed by the use of hundreds of trips to the store, stained with old soda spills and cigarette burns... I'm like "OK I get it, move on with the story." in any event I might get this book lol

You should give Starter Villain a chance, it was a fun read, even if it locked depth and seriousness. 😂 I definitely agree on your point regarding overly long and unnecessarily detailed descriptions. I feel like some fantasy books suffer from that. Thanks for commenting! 🙌

Scalzi is so overrated, but i applaud him for introducing sf to a wider audience

That is a great point. Taking away much of the scientific rigor and adding humor does open the read to a wider audience. The definition of SF is broad and there is a place for a fun book like Starter Villain. 🙌
