How a Car Starter Works

Here's how a starter works to start the engine on your car.
The car starter provides rotational motivation to turn the engine over to begin the combustion process. It is an electric motor that sits between the engine and transmission, and connects to the flywheel (manual) or flex plate (automatic).
When the starter solenoid is activated, a plunger moves the pinion gear to engage the flywheel/flex plate. Current is sent through the solenoid to the starter motor, which is a 12V DC electric motor. The motor's output is connected to a small transmission that reduces the gear ratio and multiplies torque before turning the pinion. When combustion takes over and the crankshaft is spun by the engine, the solenoid disengages, retracting the pinion and shutting off the electric motor.
Typical causes of wear include the contacts in the solenoid, which degrade overtime from friction, abrasion, contamination and corrosion. Furthermore, the brushes inside the DC electric motor may also fail due to abrasion and corrosion. This can cause a no-start condition. The starter must then be re-manufactured by replacing the affected components.
The starter demonstrated in this video came out of a 2001 Toyota Corolla.

speedkar99 Thank you for asking for input. For me the programming and can bus/serial data are a weak area. You breeze right through the programming. I do have a Job box. Quick FYI. I can't work a real job so I am a volunteer at Church Car Ministry. We have 5 lifts and fix 100s of cars for free for ppl who can't afford repairs e g single parents, ppl with health issues etc. We gave away 35 donor cars last year! BC of my experience I do the diag and direct other volunteers on installing parts. I have to get it right so we don't waste money replacing good parts. We don't have a subscription service so it's tough some times. Again, I appreciate it. 🙂

Good video. I would add more explanation about the purpose of the solenoid. That starter motor requires a LOT of current to spin the engine. You don't want that sort of power flowing thru the small gauge wires to the key switch on the steering column that turns the 'start' activity on/off. So that key switch, using much less current, controls a relay (the solenoid) which in turns connect high current direct from the battery to the starter motor. Similar examples are relays that connect high current to head lights in some cars so the high current doesn't have to flow thru the small gauge wires on the dash or turn signal stalk like my car.
@speedkar99
@speedkar99 6 лет назад
+Russel Brooks agreed, the solenoid is essentially a safety switch while at the same time ensuring the starter teeth are engaged before the motor starts running.
