2002 was the unluckiest year of Bayer Leverkusen and Germany. Lost the Bundesliga title to Borussia Dortmund. Lost the DFB Pokal title to Schalke 04. Lost the Champions League title to Real Madrid. 5 German players for Leverkusen also went on to lose the World Cup Final, although the winning side Brazil had 1 Leverkusen player (Lucio) and the Turkish side that reached the 3rd place also had 1 Leverkusen player (Yildiray Basturk).

In Germany they actually used to be called Vizekusen after the infamous 02 season. This term was so ubiquitous that Leverkusen themself trademarked it to avoid their rivals using it against them. Imagine bottling so hard that you have to trademark the resulting nickname. Truly an incredible redemption this season!

Not really they are gaining an unfair advantage on the other teams by avoiding the 50+1 rule in Germany by not having to worry about debts or staying afloat because bayer always bails them out when they would be in financial trouble

Compared to the Rest of the League, they are big spenders, Bayern, Dortmund and Leipzig (barely a Real Club in my opinion) aside, there is no Bundesliga Club that has spend as much as they did, even more so after the covid pandemic started because of that finacial backing from Bayer, they should never be considered as underdogs

I grew up in Poland, and the 1st Champions League I watched was Leverkusen vs Madrid. I was confused when someone told me that the biggest club in Germany is Bayern and not Bayer. I used to joke that Bayern Munich beat the "n" out of "Bayern" Leverkusen, turning them into "Bayer" Leverkusen.

BAYER Leverkusen, not BayerN (Bavaria) of Bayern Munich fame. Bayer Leverkusen is named after the pharmateutical company Bayer AG (think Aspirin). Employees of the company founded the team in 1904, their moniker to this day, "Werkself", meaning "Workers' 11". Leverkusen being in the very West of Germany leaves them far far away from the state of Bavaria in the South East!

It's especially frustrating when it's framed like "in Germany they are known as...". No. They are not. Brits know what a vice admiral is, Americans know what a vice-president is. I think they would understand.
