Thank you for this well presented video. I had to have my outside gas meter changed for free as recently mandated by the government in Canada. The gas technician sent by Enbridge gas exchanged the free meter and afterwards didn't restart my furnace correctly. This caused my furnaces safety switch to lockout. The gas technician didn't reset my furnace afterwards and I didn't have heat for a day on a furnace that was previously working great. I got my furnace working again by following advice from this video and resetting the switch.

Done and done. Now everyone gather around the heat register . . . "It was the night before Christmas, and the house was very cold. The furnace was not running, as it was getting very old. Jack went to his computer and with a smirk, he searched on RU-vid "how a furnace works". He learned that the flame sensor can get covered in silt, so he took out an emery cloth from his hilt. He polished the sensor until it was like new, reinstalled in the furnace and gave it attempt number 2. Success! The furnace proved a flame, the blower fan spins again and again. There was heat flowing through the vents, on this cold winter night. The flames in the furnace burned hot and very bright."

@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 2 года назад
Thanks for watching we're glad that you found it helpful! If you haven't used the furnace in a while, a metallic smell might be from the motor bearings or another part that is starting to wear out. You can see how to access and replace the blower motor in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4SY8lRl8HV0.html It could also be the smell of plastic or rubber which can sometimes be similar. Thank you so much for your explain how the Furnace working .. about the filter is that the same on in return air in some kinds of furnaces in the house's roofing or that a different filter .. Thank you
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 3 года назад
We're glad that you found it helpful. You might be referring to a fresh air intake filter which is used in some homes. Since a furnace will take air from inside the home and move it outside, it will create negative pressure. To balance this pressure a fresh air intake is often used, and a filter can help keep that air free of dust.
@Sinister392
@Sinister392 2 года назад
It’s a pretty simple concept . You either heat water and move it , or heat a piece of metal and blow air over it . That’s what I tell the newbies, but on the same hand there is a lot of variables needed to make that happen .
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 2 года назад
Thanks for watching. That is a good way to think about it. That is why there are lots of similarities between furnaces and water heaters. We did a video on how water heaters work. It might be a good one to show to the newbies: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BHUPFLbb8NY.html

Hello. Great video. I live in an apartment and the gas furnace stops working during a power outage. Can I connect a vehicle battery or some other power source to the furnace so that it will run during power outage? Thanks
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply Год назад
Thanks for watching. In North America, the blower motor runs on 120V AC power. A vehicle battery would be providing DC power and would not work. You would need an inverter and a large battery capable of providing enough power. The cost of this would be quite high. For outages, many people use small mobile propane heaters (which need to be used in a well ventilated area)

This is very useful information. The apartment I live has a comformaker furnace and it has trouble getting the apartment warm. It it puts outs a lot of soot and have to clean every week or so it over heats badly and won't right. What could cause it to get so sooty, I cleaned the flu several times. It gets a ring of soot around the blower fan at the back.
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 4 года назад
Hi Shelly, thank you for watching, we're glad you found the video helpful! First of all excessive soot is a sign of incomplete combustion, so make sure that you have a carbon monoxide detector installed. Overall a buildup of carbon on the burners can cause poor combustion. The flames should be yellow and not blue. You can see how to clean in this video we created: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1giPLrObYb4.html
@shellyblanchard5788
@shellyblanchard5788 4 года назад
@@AmreSupply Thanks for the reply. The pilot burns a yellow flame, the burner does to. The flu gets full of soot. The guy that owns this place doesn't take care of it. They put a new line in on the furnace because water heater was faulty and it was replaced, they is probably about 30 years old. I cleaned out most of the soot, and filter was black. The fan was full of dirt. I recleaned it , not it blows a good breeze. You can smell the soot when it gets hot. The gas man when I had the gas turn said it should burn a blue flame not yellow. The guy that owns this place is too cheap to have it fixed up. I'll just have to do what to make it less sooty and whatever. I think it gets in the air.
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 4 года назад
It is definitely frustrating when the place is not maintained properly by the owner. As long as that flame is yellow then its still burning dirty, so a cleaning of the burners would help. Now if there is soot on the blower then that means there might be a crack in the heat exchanger but that is hard to determine without professional tools. Just make sure to have a carbon monoxide monitor in the area as it seems like there could be carbon monoxide issues in your case.
@shellyblanchard5788
@shellyblanchard5788 4 года назад
@@AmreSupply I believe it is a 30 year old furnace. I looked on the filter instructions and it said 1980. So it hasn't been cleaned in 35 years probably . It won't heat very well either. It about 73 degrees most of the time. It runs almost constantly. I believe he knows that there is something wrong but he waits till it falls apart before he wants to do anything. I'll have to work with it. Any suggestions about the soot. I have been here 2 years nearly, and that was the first thing I checked out.

Should you insulate the "inside" of the gas furnace if the furnace is installed in the basement (damp) and the house is close to ocean (1.7 miles away from ocean in San Francisco)? If so, how to insulate the inside of the gas furnace? Thanks!
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply Год назад
Thanks for watching. When it comes to relative humidity, the furnace inducer motor will draw fresh air into the burner. Insulating the furnace will not prevent moisture from the air from getting into the system. If you want additional control of the humidity inside your home, then you'll have to use a dehumidifier.

Thanks for your great videos, you said in your video when the surface igniter get hot the gas valve open , what sensor send that signal to board to open the gas valve , and how can I check for low gas pressure, or do I need to call the hvac company for that thanks again
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 2 года назад
Thanks for watching. The opening of the gas valve & power to the hot surface ignitor will be timed by the control board only after the pressure switch verifies that the combustion airflow is good. There is no specific sensor that monitors the gas. The flame sensor will detect if the flames ignite and stay lit, so low gas pressure could be detected indirectly here. To test gas pressure and test the gas valve it's best to contact an HVAC company.

Great Video! I noticed a sewage/sulfur? smell when the heat turns on and blows through the vents especially in the morning, I replaced my filter what can this be? Oh sometimes when I turn the hot water in my bathroom sink it also stinks BUT not always
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 3 года назад
Thanks for watching. If you smell sulfur then its a more serious concern. Natural gas does not have an odour, so a harmless chemical is added so that gas leaks can be easily detected. This added chemical smells like rotten eggs or sulfur. In this case you'll want to shut off the gas valve and call a professional to do an inspection. Now musty or damp smells are a difference scenario and usually result from moisture inside the furnace or in the ducts. Smells in the water heater can be a result of the certain bacteria breaking down minerals inside the tank. A tank flush might help and you can learn more here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hkbi24QJhDw.html

Two unrelated questions! 1. I've seen people put 'Canadian tree essential oils' on their furnace filters to blast off a pleasant scene around the house, just a few drops on the filter. Does that damage the furnace? 2. Do you really recommend smart thermostats? They are fairly expensive...I'm assuming it would take months to recoup that amount in energy savings...am I correct?
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 3 года назад
Hi Danny, thank you for watching. Essential oils are a inexpensive and safe way to give a pleasant scent around the home especially when compared to some commercial air fresheners which are a mix of a bunch of chemicals. Add a few drops on the filter to start, and add more if the scent needs to be stronger. Smart thermostats can be helpful for people who want additional control over their furnace or WIFI connectivity. If you want to save money, even a basic digital thermostat like this can be programed to have lower temperatures during the day or evening to save energy: www.amresupply.com/catalog/Digital-Thermostats-HT7H?prices=50.0099.99 If you want to learn a little more about thermostat features here's a video we made: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NO5guc3vfV0.html

@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 3 года назад
Thanks for watching. Its possible that your furnace tripped and went into a lockout. This is covered in this video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-b0sAGt-1niU.html

@@AmreSupply Thanks for the quick reply. I checked the video. I am afraid it does not explain my case, as the limit switch is new I just replaced it. and there is no flashing indicators from the board. Turning on/off the power switch it does not help. Only thing that helps for several hours is disconnecting the 12 way on the main board!!!
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 3 года назад
@@mk-zk6bs Thank you for clarifying. It could be a issue with one of the components on the control board itself. The board is easy to replace but its hard to know for sure if its faulty. These sorts of things are difficult to narrow down as they can't be tested as simply or as easily as a limit switch.

In a high efficiency furnace (2 pvc pipes) is the combustion process completely sealed and separated from the air that mixes into the home? I ask because a new Radon mitigation install has the outflow pipe outside the home within a couple feet of the intake pipe to the furnace.
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 3 года назад
Thanks for watching. The fresh air intake vent is definitely an improvement as the air is taken from outside rather than from the home. In some models this will be completely sealed, in others the burners are still exposed. In either case the air is drawn in from outside the home so it mitigates issues that would normally occur with an atmospheric vent.

Is it possible if an older furnace could aggravate respiratory allergies?
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 5 лет назад
Thank you for watching. Yes an old furnace can aggravate allergies but regularly changing the air filter can help as the filters can buildup with dust and allergens. If the allergies are really bad it might make sense to get the ducts professionally cleaned as there might be a lot of dust in the ducts. We have a video on the furnace filters that you might find helpful: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hF_6-x8RR0U.html Now if you find these videos helpful and want to support the channel you can simply like, share or even subscribe as every little bit helps.

@@AmreSupply Thanks for your reply. I've tried duct cleaning twice. It's an 28 years old furnace, so it has very old fashion filter, however it's heating function is very good,.I'm only concern about the respiratory tract allergies, which only aggravates when furnace is running in winter time.
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 5 лет назад
@@thestylesworld The allergies are like aggravated during the winter since the furnace is circulating more of the air (and allergens) around your home. Even if the filter is an older style, you should be able to find a replacement. Once a filter becomes dirty it becomes ineffective at trapping particles from the air, so its essential to replace the filter every 6 months if you are trying to improve the quality of the air in your home. If not then the allergens will just be circulated every time the furnace runs. There are some additional things you can do to reduce the allergens in your home. Vacuum regularly, change bed sheets and towels regularly, and if possibly replace carpets with wood flooring. This can reduce places for allergens to be trapped as wood floors are easier to clean deeply. As well you can always try a portable air filter like these, just try to get a HEPA filter and replace it frequently based on what the manual says www.amresupply.com/catalog/Complete-Units-HQ6S

Thanks for watching! Condensate produced by the furnace or AC can either be drained directly into the floor drain or removed using a condensate pump. This is shown in more detail in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dcLhyLu0-y8.html

@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 4 года назад
Hi Rich, thank you for watching. The thermostat will control heating and cooling so you don't need to manually shut off the furnace, it will only run when the temperature goes below the threshold set on your heating setting. In the summer you can lower the threshold for heat to come on that it will only run during really cold summer nights etc.

Hi, The furnace at my house (10 years old Keeprite) started to be louder than usual when it starts during the 40 seconds or so before it heats up and before the blower kicks in. What could be the source and what problem does this signify? Thank you.
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 5 лет назад
HI Saleh, thank you for watching. We made a video on furnace noises: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WkHgeTITioE.html If your furnace uses a draft inducer blower then it could be the source of the noise. The draft inducer will run first before the blower circulates air around your home. Overtime the motor bearings can wear our, and might need to be replaced. Hopefully this helps!
