The Karabiner Model 1931 (K31) is a magazine-fed, straight-pull bolt action rifle. It was the standard issue rifle of the Swiss armed forces from 1933 until 1958 though examples remained in service into the 1970s. It has a 6-round removable magazine, and is chambered for the 7.5×55mm Swiss Gewehrpatrone 1911 or GP 11, a cartridge with ballistic qualities similar to the 7.62×51mm NATO/.308 Winchester cartridge. Each rifle included a 6-round detachable box magazine with matching stamped serial number. A charger is used to load the magazine from the top of the receiver.

The same way a 1889 works but with only 5 round mag instead of 12 and with forward locking lugs on the breech and shorter barrel.

I've read a comment somewhere on youtube claiming that the K31 and /or it's derivatives (and any straight pull bolt action rifles) do not rotate the empty case before pulling it out of the chamber. The bolt obviously locks by rotating as seen on this video, so it would follow that the case rotates as well when it unlocks but it does not seem to on this video. Is that possible and if so, how?

on the k31 the bolt head is a different part that the bolt locking lugs wich rotate around it. It is nested inside and supported by a shoulder in the bolt body. You can see it at 2:53. the bolt only move in a linear fashion so the extractor does not rotate

How does the bolt rotate, what causes it to? (also why does it need to?)

The bolt sleeve has a cam track that the bolt handle sits in, when you operate the bolt handle it causes the sleeve to rotate either locking or unlocking depending whether you pull or push. The bolt locks with two matching lugs in the action when pushed into battery. The bolt locks for safety, to stop the firer getting a face full of metal.

@@haydenkelley9806 The SVT-40 uses a different gas system that does not rely on rotating locking lugs to delay the bolt opening, the reason they delay the bolt from moving backwards is so the cartridge doesnt continue to go off outside of the chamber, and cause an out of battery detonation, which would cause an explosion, and send tiny shards of metal everywhere. I think, correct me if I'm wrong

@@haydenkelley9806 the Tokarev semi-auto uses tilting block system, the same system as FAL battle rifle and similar to Browning tilting barrel mechanism used on many handguns. Basically the bolt is dropped into a recess in the receiver, locking it in place. When the shot is fired, the gas push the short stroke piston, which in turn pust the bolt and unlocking it, the rest is history.

More simpler than bolt action rifles

This is a bolt action rifle. It’s just straight pull back.

It's actually a little more complex than a normal bolt action.
