In this episode I am going off the beaten track and ride my Honda CRF250L through the African bush. I come across an elephant skeleton, but also get myself into some trouble. Oops. This is going to take a while to fix...

You blow my mind. You are out in an endless desert--no water, no petrol, no people, no animals for miles and you feel no trepidation. Your curiosity drives you to check out elephant tracks and skeletons. You are truly a student of the earth. I can't imagine all the knowledge that will reside in you when you are old. You are an amazing person. A true explorer. Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm for the planet and the beautiful videos.

Seeing you pulling the "thousands" of thorns out of the tires with a Zen state of patience and endurance reminded me of the times in life I've confronted similar kinds of frustratingly repetitive mundane tasks, and often ones that I could have avoided. It's a reality that occasionally happens in the things we do. I enjoyed seeing the inclusion of this in your video and empathized with what you had to do, and I appreciated your cheer and good nature in tacking the thorny problem.

The further north that anyone travels in Namibia, the greener and more populated it becomes. But it is still sparsely populated compared with most of the rest of the world. The desolation is stark, but you just motor on like it was just another day at the office! Most people would turn around and head for home, but you just go on and on! Amazing and super entertaining, so much fun to watch! Reminds me of times when I had to stop in the middle of nowhere and fix my own bike. Those times are super intense it's kind of do or die, but you are still having fun in the process! There is nothing like a motorcycle ride in the bush! And we get to see how the other half lives.
@lkj974
@lkj974 2 года назад
Those thorn/stickers look just like goatheads. They are the bane of bicycle riders in the american southwest, they are shed by a plant that is endemic there and spreading to other areas. One of them will puncture a tire and in the season I have found more than twenty in each tire. It’s enough to make you give up bicycle riding. The only solution will be solid tires that can’t puncture. I assumed the plant that produced them was native, but the southwest desert is full of invasive species and it looks like the goathead plant may come from Africa because those were goatheads or I’ve never seen them. It takes tweezers to pull out the broken ones, this really brings back memories.

i rode with a mountain bike group in Kuwait's deserts for 25 years. We had the same thorns there. We insisted that newcomers fitted anti-puncture stripes between their inner tubes and tyres and filled the tubes with slime sealant. We usually had to help the newcomers do that. You would literally pick up hundreds of thorns but the tyre kept enough air pressure to keep going. Some newcomers were obstinate and didn't take the puncture strip and slime advice and there would be harsh words said as the group waited in up to 50 degree C heat while we loaned them our spare inner tubes and changed the tubes for them. Every year or less the inner tubes would finally give out and be thrown away and you could see the beads of dried slime where the thorns had penetrated. I always carried 2 spare pre-slimed inner tubes but never used them myself, just loaned them to others during rides.

Yes, exactly! I have made the same recommendation for tyre sealant. We actually used it on our old VW bus when we did Namibia. Never had a single flat tyre... But got stuck in sand plenty! And got ourselves into a bit of a spot after a guinea fowl flew across the road and made a rather large dent just below the windscreen... 4 days later we did some hasty panel beating when we were caught in flood rains in the middle of nowhere and the wiper actuator got stuck on the dent. 🤣 ...such good memories. 😬

Yes I did inflate them. And yet I got a puncture while in Haarlem on my Guzzi in `81 and bunged a load of slime in and it worked well until I fixed it properly.

Those thorns are called goatheads in the southwestern area of Idaho. I can't believe you didn't stick yourself pulling them out! They will flatten a bike tire quickly but car/motocycle tires, not so quickly. Adventure just means getting stuff stuck in your tires every so often. Soon I will be caught up on all of your old vids. What adventures you've been on. Happy riding!

Loving seeing your travels. Brings back many memories of my 6 weeks over there in a landrover in 1996. We actually drove that river bed road before turning east and entering Etosha game reserve by the west gate at Otjovasandu [we had special permits as the western half of the reserve was closed to tourists at that time]. Wish I was still young enough to contemplate another such trip.

You said something in a latest video that summed up 'the whole experience'...and i quote you: 'I just want to ride.' That just said it all...me too..don't we love it...we're on an adventure!

I have puncture vine on my property. It's not possible to walk barefoot in my yard, or ride a bicycle. The thorns get stuck in the soles of my boots and I end up tracking some in the house, which I occasionally step on with my bare feet.

On a Sunday morning I had visited Rob Millard in the Etosha Game Reserve to repair a water pump when I was called on the Radio, A young boy , 11 years old, had picked up a detonator, not knowing what it is, put it in his mouth and connect the two electric wires on a PM 9 battery. His mouth, chin and chest was seriously injured, so I rushed to Opuwo Hospital to save his life. The Ruacana Falls on the Angola Border is beautiful but a lot of steps down and up to climb, but worthwhile.

At the start of the episode we have the same stickers in Arizona. We call them goat heads. When you are a kid walking around bare foot, they hurt.

Just one bunch of people on this lonely ball in space, and we're fighting amongst ourselves - often because of 'religion' ! (Or silly superstition, as I call it). Good sentiment, Steven.

@@thetessellater9163 This topic is decidedly not one for Itchy Boots' entertaining channel, but I'll say that, like so many others, I've come to see religion as the divide-and-conquer Machiavellian tool of the elite to protect their station from the consequences of the injustices they perpetrate against the rest.

You need a Leatherman with pliers for those thorns :P
@johnpagejr.7628
@johnpagejr.7628 3 года назад
actually a very sharp knife works very well for removing them. You just need to place the knife like you are going to cut the thorn off flush with the tire but just put a little pressure on the knife blade and twist the thorn out. Do not push to hard or you will cut the thorn off flush and you will have to do surgery to remove the thorn. You just want to apply enough pressure to grip the thorn and then twist it up and out of your tire.
