How a Manual Transmission Works

Here’s a look inside a longitudinally mounted front wheel drive manual transmission to see what’s inside and how it works.
This manual transmission came out of a 2002 B5.5 Volkswagen Passat. It is a front wheel drive car but has a longitudinally mounted engine (which is often found in RWD setups). It has a 5 - speed manual transmission with reverse. In this video we tear into the setup, including the input shaft, countershaft and front differential. In addition, we examine the three shifter forks that are responsible for the gears; 1-2, 3-4 and 5-reverse. We also shift through each gear to see how the shifter forks move, the collars slide, and synchronizers to control the gear ratio.

I'm surprised you don't see more wear on the synchronizer, it seems to do its thing just by a close press fit. Also I didn't realize those collars also spin, so there is constant friction with the forks.
@speedkar99
@speedkar99 2 года назад
The forks have a loose fit with the collars. Everything is lubricated as it's filled with fluid. The synchroniser only wears for the half second it takes for you to move the shift lever from neutral into a gear. After that, it does not have to resist motion, unlike a clutch pack in an automatic transmission.

The great thing about driving a car with a manual transmission is that operator skill directly affects wear on a clutch and manual transmission. Learn how to drive a car with a worn clutch and worn synchros and once you have mastered that, a new clutch and transmission can be made to last the life of the car. For example, engaging the clutch at idle or just above idle, not riding your clutch with the foot once engaged, preventing excessive slip, not resting your hand on the shift lever, and shifting gears and making a momentary pause to allow the synchro time to equalize speed - just some techniques to optimize the life of the clutch and transmission.

So what happens when someone on the highway shifts from fifth to "sixth" which turns out to be the reverse? Totaled transmission?
@speedkar99
@speedkar99 2 года назад
The syncro will take most of the hit if anything. It most likely won't engage since the speed difference is huge
@cernejr
@cernejr 2 года назад
Reverse is unlikely due to the speed difference, but people do occasionally perform a "money-shift" (like 6th to 3rd or 2nd) and over-rev the engine. The Humble Mechanic had a video about that, I believe. Not the same thing what you are asking about, but related.
@PELPIDAS
@PELPIDAS 2 года назад
The engagement won't take place. You are going to hear a loud grinding sound and stop your self by instinct. Now if you are determined to "shift" then you can pull the lever until the teeth of the gears are turned to dust or most likely a gear breaks. After that it's mine and every other Mechanic's headache xD

Why do I sometimes need to release the clutch a bit while applying pressure on the shifter knob when going into 1st gear or reverse from a standstill?
@speedkar99
@speedkar99 2 года назад
Something doesn't sound right... You need to depress the pedal so engine power doesn't rotate the input shaft
@seljer
@seljer 2 года назад
@@speedkar99 It's like the shifter doesn't make it all the way to the indent even though it's staying 'in gear' as far as the H patten goes. So after I realise I'm not moving I apply constant pressure to the shifter knob while slowly releasing the clutch just a little (just enough to let the input shaft slip a little) and I can then feel the shifter go that final ~3mm to fall into the 'proper' position and only then can I start moving.
@kristianhermann5971
@kristianhermann5971 2 года назад
@@seljer In the case of reverse, that's simply the idler gear needing to mesh correctly to engage. Because most reverse gears are unsynchronized, if the gears aren't aligned it won't engage until one gear moves slightly. Then it'll pop in. Happens on my car all the time. I either use your method or shift into 1st, then back into reverse until it engages. 1st generally doesn't suffer the same problem, however because one typically shifts into 1st from a standstill, the same principle applies. Not an issue once moving. However, unless you have a synchronized reverse, you can't shift into reverse while moving or you'll grind and wear the gear teeth.
