How an Automated Manual Transmission Works

Here’s how a Honda Automatic transmission works! In this video, we teardown the automatic transmission from a Honda Accord Hybrid V6 to see what’s inside, how an automated manual transaxle works and what are the typical failure points in the notorious Honda V6 transmissions.
Honda’s V6 automatic transmissions are non-traditional in design, doing away without planetary gearsets. Instead, they resemble a manual transaxle in design - that’s because it is essentially an automated manual. It has four separate shafts, each of which housing its own set of gears that are controlled by fluid clutches instead of shifter forks.
The mainshaft drives 4th and 5th gear, while the countershaft takes the rotation from all the other gears and drives the final drive. There’s a separate intermediary shaft for 3rd gear and a secondary shaft for 1st and 2nd gear. The valve body is housed at the front of the transmission, behind the torque converter, with some of its passages machined directly into the transmission casing. This is done for tighter packaging, so Honda was able to sandwich an electric motor for the integrated motor assist.

I always knew Honda ATs were unique and basically manuals, but it's cool to actually see what's inside of one. These things definitely like frequent fluid changes, I notice a positive difference in shift quality every time I service mine. And I do it every 15-20,000 miles lol

Mechanic here. It's worth noting that there was often a second, external fluid filter that was easily replaced. V6 transmission failures are largely isolated to models before around 2005, and were primarily the result of poor cooler circuit flow in the valve body. That caused the converter clutch to sometimes drag, building up excessive heat, and eventually burning second gear.. other gears followed. Early 5-speed models had additional cooling jets to help reduce the heat, but the aftermarket eventually discovered ways to modify the cooler circuit and virtually end premature trans failures.
@TuneStunnaMusic

I have a BXMA with a flaring 4th gear, and i probably should get this external filter installed before the trans burns itself up. Ive been reading about it.

@mrkzj2
@mrkzj2 3 года назад
@@speedkar99 Nah the main difference there is the second fluid pump, but they still fail like all the others. Rebuilt a number of these, a few of which were from Accord hybrids, and of course dealt with a million at the dealership. A good valve body cleaning including polishing the bores, pressure testing the valves, modifying cooler flow, etc. works wonders. Very rarely see internal filter restrictions - those usually happen with burned clutches from driving with slips and flares too long.
@mrkzj2
@mrkzj2 3 года назад
@@TuneStunnaMusic I'd say it's probably too late to save with just a filter. A lot of the CB7 (1990-1993) Accords have issues with the transmission control unit failing, if you've got one of these that won't shift look under the passenger side carpet - there are 2 control units (early 90s tech yay) pull out the one closer to the passenger door and open it up and look for burnt resistors in one corner. Get a "Denshigiken" TCU and chuck the OkiData TCU and most often that gets them going again.

Staggering complexity. Automatic transmissions are truly a wonder of the world. I try to imagine what it would be like to design the case or the valve body, then make a drawing that the foundry can use to build the mold to cast those parts and the machinists can use to machine the parts to the correct tolerances. Those guys are living in an entirely different world from me. Whatever they are being paid, it isn't enough.

When I test drive a manual car I shift it through the gears testing the synchronization, listen for any nasty noises, and violently pump the accelerator in any gear to make sure it doesn't jump out. When the gearbox is not leaking it is fine for me. This semi-automatic gearbox is more difficult to test. You can not really access any wear of all the clutches. My advice for buying high mileage older cars is to stick to a manual. In the Netherlands where I live the majority of smaller and medium-size cars are manual anyway. But nice video! Isn't this the more robust 4 shaft version which was introduced on the 05 RL with a much lower failure rate?

I've never examined the RL but I assume it's different because of the AWD
@mitchd8516
@mitchd8516 3 года назад
@@speedkar99 From what I can tell the RL just uses a FWD gearbox similar to that which you dissected with a transfer case attached to send the drive to the rear mounted diff/acceleration device. Now opening up the RL SH-AWD unit if you could find a dead one would be interesting...to this owner at least. Cheers

I wouldn’t consider that an AMT. AMTs are literally “automated manual transmissions”, which means there’s a clutch instead of torque converter (and no, the lockup clutch DOES NOT counts). It’s just an automatic but with conventional gears, instead of planetary ones.

Any REAL Automated MANUAL GEARBOX out there with a torque converter? Manual transmissions are rugged, but robotized manual transmissions seem to be poor in bumper to bumper traffic, generally burning the friction clutches.
