How a Manual Transmission Works
A demonstration of the basic principle behind a constant-mesh manual transmission. The animation is loosely based on Toyota's 5-speed R150, and the 3D model it is created from is available on Thingiverse at www.thingivers...
I hope that the video is helpful and instructive for some.
(Synchronizers are not covered here - for the sake of brevity and clarity)

Very nice work and getting things to print with the right tolerances on a CR-10 is a challenge in itself. I fought that on a few stationary steam engines to run on air. First transmission I took apart was on a 1950 Plymouth to replace a broken synchronizer gear, at age 17, now 71.

Thank you for taking the time to comment. I was two when you took that first transmission apart. You didn't mention that it was ever put back together ;) My CR-10 and I have reached various agreements over time (I don't push; it doesn't shove). It's been extraordinarily good to me for the past year - a real workhorse, but yes - tight tolerances were the largest challenge here. And that shifter cradle...I'm still waking up in the middle of the night...

@johnsanborn2950
@johnsanborn2950 5 лет назад
@@gvet47 I have found the hot-end silicone sock to be a worthy, inexpensive, and painless modification. Highly recommend them now for just that eventuality. This was done completely from scratch with plenty of missteps along the way. I actually began modeling a much simpler, older transmission (viewed in a 1936 Chevrolet training film titled "Spinning Levers" - look it up - a beautiful little production) - but decided, after weeks of work, to scrap that and, instead model this much more complex and (to me) interesting one. I had a lot of prior experience with video production - but almost none with the animation of a 3D model - so that took a bit of effort. One could motorize it, to be sure. I was tempted to do that with an earlier model that I made of an open differential (www.thingiverse.com/thing:3592644) but decided in both cases that it would hurt more than it would help when using the model(s) as hands-on instructional tools. And just so I can sleep in peace again: My arithmetic was bad. I was 5 when you tore down that gear box. :)

If curious, here is a screenshot of the video's structure as seen from the POV of PowerDirector. You will see 12 layered tracks of video, 1 audio track, 1 fx track, and that top unnumbered track which is the Closed Captioning (kinda). So why might car cruising (by cruise control) in 5th gear suddenly shift into 1st on its own, no input on the shifter (or any pedals) by the driver, and remain stuck there? Failure of a shift fork, or ?

Gear locking pins and spring/C clamp might be worn.

hello friend good video a question the reductions are the same in all the gearbox or vary according to the manufacturer and how can I know what they are, is there a page that says so? greetings from Argentina
@Twittler1
@Twittler1 3 года назад
The ratios vary from model to model of gearboxes from different manufacturers, and they also vary within models from the same gearbox manufacturer depending on what the car manufacturer wants. There isn’t a standard set, although some ratios are very common. Very few car makers make their own gearboxes - they buy them from suppliers.

Theres blueprints to make it on Solidworks?

Hey quick question could you make it without using the bearing balls and the spring? If not is there any alternative?
@johnsanborn2950
@johnsanborn2950 4 года назад
It would still function w/o that hardware. You would only lose the detents that provide positive stops for the selector sleeves' key positions.

i was wondering how you made those gears in fusion 360. i couldn't find a way to make helical gears with a controlled outer diameter. i tried add ons but to no avail.
@johnsanborn2950
@johnsanborn2950 4 года назад
I used "Helical Gear Generator" by Ross Korsky (available in Autodesk's App Store). I did not control individual gear diameters. I controlled each gear set's "Center Distance" (the sum of their two radii) - keeping this a constant. This is done by calculating an appropriate module for each of the four gear sets.

Can you do a video explaining how you made the animation?
@johnsanborn2950
@johnsanborn2950 4 года назад
Thank you for that question. I'm not sure how viable such a project might be. It would require several hundred hours to produce, and would have a relatively small target audience - those using both Fusion 360 and PowerDirector. But you have me pondering it....
