The process of an ant emerging from its cocoon, known as eclosing, is truly amazing, and this week I was able to film it occurring in a starting carpenter ant colony. Hope you enjoy this week's episode! Ant love forever! This video was shot in 4K Ultra HD resolution.

@AntsCanada
@AntsCanada 2 года назад
Funny enough, they actually can! Some ant keepers sometimes do something called 'Brood Boosting' where you steal brood from a wild colony and give it to a starting queen with brood. The ants hatching from the adopted cocoons act like ordinary workers of the colony and believe the queen is their mother. Even crazier is there is a whole genus of ants called slave-making ants (Polyergus sp.) that specialize in raiding Formica host ant colonies, stealing their cocoons then taking it back to their nest. The Formica ants that hatch from these stolen cocoons end up doing ALL the work for the colony. The slave-making ants can't even feed themselves. They need the Formica slaves to feed them! 🤯🐜

Newborn mammals are also covered in a membrane and basically, all species except humans lick/eat this layer off to clean and stimulate the newborn. Like mammals, it may give off a scent that is also attractive to predators (like flies) so that is why they hurry to clean their new baby off so it doesn't attract TOO much attention (only enough to entice workers to help it exit its casing!) What do you think?

@@hummanbean4898 Eating the placenta is pretty common in a lot of cultures, actually. It's packed full of nutrients that are vital for new/nursing mothers. I'd have assumed that they'd have been like moths and butterflies, and all other "singleton" insects which have to emerge alone, and just do it themselves. It's not a true AntsCanada vid... without classical music in the background and a red arrow somewhere in the thumbnail 😉😂 The bit at 7:08 where they each hold the cocoon with their mandibles in a swaying motion is the ant version of Lady & The Tramp and no one can tell me otherwise... So I suggest naming her Lady and her colony the Tramps. I know in the movie the Tramp's a male but the term itself means "a person who travels from place to place on foot in search of work"...which fits the worker ants. Because they travel within the colony and outside to find things to do to help out

It's really so interesting how the "cleaning" might act as a stimulation for the newly hatched one to start moving! I was thinking about how a dog and cat mama licks their puppies and kittens bottoms to stimulate them to go to the bathroom. We can see in the video, the ant inside the cacoon didn't start moving until their sister licked them for the first time and they started moving even more as the queen and the worker ant kept licking even outside the cacoon! Like a signal "hey, we've been dangling you around but now its time to wake up!". Also, it's something the worker ant and the queen do due to instinct to keep them clean and out of any dangerous bacteria since the new ant can't move for a bit but woah.

I've seen this happen in my own colonies, including the tugging. I've also observed worker ants from some species, putting their antennae near the "baby" and very rapidly creating a buzz, hundreds/thousands of osculations per minute. I've wondered if this is a method for moving air, or perhaps another stimulus to get the "baby" going.

Well Mikey, what can I say. Your skills at macro filming are 2nd to none. Have you ever thought of making a full length film of the life of an ant colony, from queen flight to mature colony. I have never seen such a in depth film in macro! I am sure it would make a great geographical movie, and also help any "newbies" to the hobby of what is going on in the nest! Just think, a full length vidio "Life in the nest" in macro...how educational. Realy great vid' (as usual) looking forward to next week!
