My grandfather was a farmer in Cuba in the 1950s and 1960s, he lived in Vinales Pinar del Rio which has loads of hills and its very rural. He told me that Fidel Castro and a huge convoy of people came to him, his brother and some neighbors to ask about the terrain because they were looking to build a military base.

You forgot to mention Oleg Penkovskey the high ranking Soviet military officer who initially gave the western governments intelligence about the nuclear missiles located in Cuba. It wasn’t the U2’s all by themselves. Oleg Penkovsky literally gave his life to make sure that ours could continue to exist, and brought the nuclear brinksmanship to a halt. Ukraine is Cuba for you right now...Oh what's that, they gave up their nukes? Oh sure, but NATO can re-supply them with hundreds more whenever they deem Russia to be a threat with those US stealth ships andd....That's one super-power gone and one more to go for the US. Why is it like that? Because even on a second strike, Russia can only nuke Ukraine, since that's where the rest of the nukes are at. This is exactly how NATO gets away without a direct nuclear threat to them. Don't be fooled, even now they're only supplying Ukraine to weaken Russia.

@MichaelSHartman
@MichaelSHartman 2 года назад
@@terryescajeda7881 It was once thought that with the various treaties war was unthinkable then came World War I. It destroyed monarchies, and empires. The War to End All Wars was thought to be so bad that there would never be another like it. The League of Nations would prevent it then World War II happened. Were nuclear weapons so horrible no one would ever use them? A long line of inventions have been thought to be so horrible as a weapon that it would bring peace, including the Wright brothers plane. Every weapon that has been considered to horrible to use eventually was. Nuclear is no longer has the cutting edge advantage. EMP, cyber, GMO biological, AI, autonomous robotics, and perhaps antimatter WMD may eventually be used. IMO cyber warfare is faster, cheaper, easier, and more difficult to determine origin than other weapons, and can be used as a prelude to kinetic. AI sufficiently learned chess in 4 hours to beat all challengers, created DOTA 2 strategies that beat 99.6% of human challengers, beat world class Go masters, and beat poker professionals operating on incomplete data. What general is 99.6% successful? Mentally faster autonomous jet fighters that can survive high g forces are in the works. Infantry drones may be on the drawing boards. Knowing the outcome, and preventing it happening are two separate things. We have cars that can identify their environment, and make life and death judgement calls. Genetically engineered pathogens might be the next WMD. Would a globally ambitious despot create a pandemic to gain control? People have known the outcome of war for thousands of years, yet the United States has about five per century all the same. Other countries have different numbers as humanity has been a conflict somewhere in the world constantly.

It's one thing for a RU-vid series to cover the Cuban Missile Crisis (Extra Credits/History). It's another for a SINGLE VIDEO TO COVER THE SAME EVENT! IMPRESSIVE!

I vaguely remember something about Raul Castro prepping his troops to take Guantanamo Bay. Can't remember if that was part of what they taught us in Cuban schools or if I read it on the internet though. That would have been one of the least likely catalysts for WW3 during the crisis, but it was definitely a possibilty. Crazy to think of how close we were to disaster. And in how many ways

NFS2: High Stakes you could manually switch on turn signals, hazards, hi/low beams on all cars, which was pretty cool back then but would've made more sense in a GTA game. Derp, GTA was top-down back then nevermind lol

One correction: Miami is about 200 miles from Havana, however, American soil is only 90 miles north, in Key West.

My dad was in Army basic training during the Cuban Missile Crisis. They told my dad and buddies that they had qualified on their weapons so they are capable enough to go into battle.

Wow... just wow. I've never heard it explained like this but this was incredible. To know we were THAT close to millions of people being killed is just mind blowing. Kudos to Kennedy and all the soldiers manning their battlestations to let peace prevail.

I heard that another instance of how there was almost a World War 3, was when a supernova explosion was detected during a peace treaty of some kind, one side thought that the other was trying to conduct secret tests out in space during a time that they shouldn't have. But, the timing of this was several several years ago

Russia in my opinion was right to put missiles on Cuba as they were just insuring the mad ferry. with the missiles in Turkey belonging to the US Russia had no viable way of getting to America with its nuclear ordinance so it wasn’t a case of starting world War three it was simply a case of ensuring that they had the ability to hit America if America shot first. And both sides in the Cold War fought at the other would shoot first but they wouldn’t shoot first hence why nuclear weapons are the best peacekeepers in the history of humanity.
