@@SteampunkSammy I know what you mean. There's no "foolproof" way to "avoid" scalping, whether it's raspberry pi or hunk of aluminium. The problem is Raspberry pi foundation it's not even tried to figure it out. The only solution they think of is "pumping more Pi's" despite they relied on other components maker to source their parts. And then there's business reason that "why sell to hobby's user when you can sold in bulk which more profitable to scalper and embedded system companies?". I know raspberry pi foundation didn't have the same production scale like Dell or HP, but the main point it's they didn't even try to regulate it in the first place, they already know their in short supply of pies and restock is not gonna be quick any soon.

I don't think you quite understand the monolithic task of a completely new supply chain for a microcomputer. It's not just "Plug in a few more machines", it's "Find machines, buy the machines, custom program them. Hire people to use them, find places that sell the components you need, set up a supply line using courier companies, hire more people to deal with the logistics, etc" Plus, let's say they did do that. Once all this waiting is over..... what then? You have many times more supply than demand, the factories get shut down which is a monolithic situation again to deal with
@goblinslayer5404
@goblinslayer5404 Год назад
@@andreyrumming6842 ur wrong about one thing, it wouldn't be completely new, they just need to copy their existing supply chain, cz that makes the most sense anyway. same machines and everything. if the suppliers have enough stock then same suppliers. it would of course still require more space and more workers.
@ArchSchizo
@ArchSchizo Год назад
@@andreyrumming6842 Or, just stop selling your products with charity-like profit margins, so you can afford to scale your business up. Don't wanna do it? Pay someone else to offset the task. Hiring managers, machinists, programmers, its not done by one guy. Also, supply is far less than demand. Raspberry Pi is the only tech company to STILL be recovering from the supply chain shortages, to my knowledge. Out of stock everywhere, no new models, Zero 2W has ONLY an upgraded CPU from the Zero W. Company is slacking, and thats why competitors are thriving despite RPI still being the face of ARM SBCs.

I had to pay freakin 350$ for Pi 4 2gb. 10 times more than the promised price. I really needed a Raspberry Pi, because I had a need to run such a code that would not start anywhere else, and I needed it urgently, so I had to pay half of my monthly salary for this computer.

I worked in PCB factories for about 13 years. I did in-circuit and final testing with bed of nails testing equipment. I also did solder repairs to fix failing boards too. It was a fantastic job and paid well. I miss those days!

I was recently made redundent from a company that went bust. They had a placement machine in the surface mount room. I was their only Test Engineer but I found it quite amazing to watch it work.... It was rather slower than the ones shown in the video as it was very old but it kept me in work as it often missed components or placed them upside down..😂

@Kevin-ht1ox

@@the_retag ok pedant, small businesses fit into the b2b market which is what an enterprise customer is -- its an organization that sells stuff to other organizations. They buy in bulk so that they can commercialize it as part of another product. This is in distinct opposition to selling to the individual an educational platform geared towards democratizing computing.

@@Kevin-ht1ox you are in a way correct, but these people have tinkered and developed with pis as well and one would void their efforts if they were cut off.
@Kevin-ht1ox

@@the_retag The problem is that the foundation is very clearly prioritizing enterprise sales over their core base. Then they claim the pandemic and production issues for shortages and make hollow promises that they're working on fixing their production problems -- they're perpetually 6 months away. Upton has an integrity issues and he's stringing everyone along. The fact that he's admitting now that they prioritized commercial customers during the pandemic is an admission of previous lies about shortages. Why would I believe anything he says about Y2023 Q3. He ghosted the community about supply problems and now he's stringing everyone along. He should publish what the per-unit sales price has been for each of their business customers. I bet it's higher than what they publish as the MSRP and that is the core detail of the deception -- money -- they make more of it when they prioritize business customers even though it alienates their user base.

I noticed they don’t put the boards in the anti-static bags in the video. Have they stopped doing that and if so why?
@JeffGeerling
@JeffGeerling Год назад
Excellent question! I wondered too-apparently the boxes have a special antistatic coating applied to them when they are printed, and that's sufficient for the amount of ESD protection they need in shipment and storage.
@AndrewTSq
@AndrewTSq Год назад
From my understanding cardboards are bad at generating static electricity, and also if they are humid they are even worse at it. But I am not worried, since Ive never since the middle 80ies been able to kill a electronic device with static electricity.
