“Jungleman” Dan Cates and HCL regular "Bobo" played a $300,000+ pot on Hustler Casino Live, join Phil Galfond as he breaks down what Dan Cates and Bobo might have been thinking in this high stakes poker hand review!
🔐 Learn High-level Poker Play & Unlock 8000+ ELITE Training Videos: ➡️ galfond.link/8000EliteVideos
Dan Cates' pro poker instincts were put to the test in this high stakes No Limit Hold ‘em hand; ‘standard’ or ‘optimal’ high stakes poker strategy says one thing and the Jungleman yells another while raking in a huge poker pot!
How often do you see poker players making nearly pot-sized 300 big blind bets on the river with 90 big blinds behind?
How often do you see 300 big blind bets into 400 big blind pots while playing $200/$400 NL Hold ‘em?
This feels like a slightly rare poker moment…
Thankfully we have Phil Galfond to break down what each high stakes poker player might have been thinking in this ultra deep stack poker hand.
Said another way, we have a high stakes poker legend breaking down high stakes poker strategy at a high level, and for FREE!
For those curious, the original high stakes poker live stream this footage came from featured a high level poker line-up of Dan Cates, Bobo, Phil Hellmuth, Stanley Choi, Nik Airball, Handz, Israeli Ron, and Andy Stacks.
Thank you to all of these high stakes poker regulars for allowing Hustler Casino Live to broadcast their high stakes poker hands for us to enjoy and Phil to analyze.

Mr.Galfond. With Gabe announcing his retirement, assuming that he was serious and taking his reason(s) for doing so, I believe that the stage is rightfully set for you to make a return to HSP. You’ve got the substance, a broad enough audience on RU-vid that respects you based on that substance AND for the entertainment value that your takes bring. Your older and wiser self would simply be a bit more animated with one a many of “one liners” with your in debt analysis that you’d adjust, overtime, tailoring to a TV or HSP audience. An opportunity in disguise for you that takes into account your mistakes of your youth and tje wisdom gained from them by your current self. People can relate to that and I believe that they would support it and you specifically as a host because of that and your knowledge. Also your known for helping people improve their games in POKER. Good luck. Just add some Comedy and work on being comfortable doing it. The story writes itself

great content. exemplary. I suppose I would be interested to see some hands where nothing incredibly dramatic happens, eg where it's like bet turn take it down or something, or check fold, with a deeper explanation of the thought process, or for instance spots where pros are seemingly playing very tight; like maybe some really standard spots where players are making the very standard moves but it's perhaps interesting for some reason. Like eg players situationally raising early then folding to three bets with hands like 77 or AT maybe, like perhaps places where the pro is like fold here out of position almost automatic but to an observer might be like "why?"

THAT was a sick hand. On every street, by both players, all the way until the river fold. Nice! Top level play and analysis of what was going through their heads. Everything done actually made sense in the context of actually playing "tough" and not giving up too early on hand + maximizing your EV throughout. As I start to understand this stuff better, my biggest problem is over thinking hands at my local casino cash and home games where the other players are largely donkeys not thinking about any of this ;o). Identifying the level of the other players at the table is key part of using this information effectively.

biggest takeaway for me here is to not get too fancy with hands like Q9s preflop because it gets you in really difficult spots postflop which are tough to handle and as played I think Bobo has to call
@richardlefaive1944
@richardlefaive1944 9 месяцев назад
As played, I think Bobo calling is NOT an EV+ move. As bet, far more often than not you will be be looking at an; OP, Trip 8s, and even the odd 9s over 8s boat + quad 8s in jungle's hand. Most ppl with the nut flush draw are calling at least 1 of the turn or river rather than check raising. You have to be REALLY confident Bobo only has a suited face card + 9 ( or suited 10-9 ) to play it as Jungle did ( e.g. a read has to be involved) . Otherwise its too much $ to spew on a bluff.
@soldiersofduck
@soldiersofduck 4 месяца назад
@@richardlefaive1944 agree. In a 4bet pot as 4 bettor you're just simply not scared of an 8 or AA-QQ. With bobo effectively capped thus, you can take this nutted line with TT-AA and crush. He should have folded flop but if you find yourself on the river with a 9 there you're beat so often.

Imo, the read by jm would be the same as Bobo would not check trips for pot control very often and instead has the range Phil mentions in the video. Thus, jm would probably fire the river and leave Bobo with a tough decision (for less money I think)

I agree that it's a tough call. However, I would have shoved all in on the river. The check-raise on the turn made no sense -- Jungle would have simply value bet his trips, because you wouldn't want to allow a check check on the turn. Thus, the check-raise was most likely either a bluff with a hand like AK or a semi-bluff with a flush draw (with maybe some AA or KK type hands mixed in there as well). Furthermore, the river bet was much too small for it to be a hand like a full house, which, again, would want to extract max value. If you're not up against trips or a house, the only non-bluff hands your opponent could plausibly have there would be over-pairs -- and ANY over-pair like AA or KK should fold to your shove most of the time. You could very easily be holding 88, 89 of hearts, 99, A8, or even 22 -- considering that, this deep, it's not TOO insane to occasionally call 10k preflop to go set mining (and especially considering that 20k raise after the flop). And if the check raised turn was suspicious enough to you to rule out trips, then even holding 33 isn't completely out of the question -- you could have gone set mining preflop, bluffed the missed flop with that 20k raise, continued bluffing, then floated the *suspicious* turn check-raise, reasoning that your opponent had a semi-bluff or over-pair (but with the intention of bombing the river to get over-pairs to fold)... and simply hit the 3 for the house.

Very insightful. It's always easy to explain the past, but nobody is representing the ongoing thought process like you, Phil. Now, I am missing two points: 1. When Dan reraises to ten k imho he is trying to find out if there is high pair on the other side. 2. When Bono says "I like the ten" he is basically saying "I am not so convinced anymore if my raise was so good." ?
@richardlefaive1944
@richardlefaive1944 9 месяцев назад
On point 2 ... It certainly seems like Bobo is saying he doesn't have As, probably not Ks either. That comment sets up all Jungle's subsequent moves but ... "I like 10K" is ALSO something that someone with pocket 8s or 7-8s, 8-9s would say ...

I'm pretty confused how as Bobo you can call the turn but then fold that river. What does the river change? Can you really expect a check on the river often enough given the action and stack sizes? I'm not saying I think he should call the turn check raise, I just don't get what range he could have put Jungleman on that would make him call turn but fold a 3o river.

Check raise with 2 overs is standard no? I guess the paired board makes this a little less common but it's pretty clear that jungle's got a read on bobo that he's bluffing a little too much and wants to punish. Bobos sizing on the turn is a little unusual since ya betting small is not what you want to do on the turn with a made hand or a draw. So I guess the only options is that he's value betting something. But raising a nut draw and 2 overs is still ok

Jungleman was repping an over pair preflop, and Bobo ended up believing him. I've watched a lot of Jungleman's plays with overpairs on similar streams in Austin, and he always plays overpairs strong on every street. There was no check raising the turn. Seemed really fishy based on how he's played those hands previously. Check out his hand when he had QQ against Nik Airball at The Lodge stream. Dude did everything he could on flop and turn to get Airball off his hand, but Airball had a flush draw, chased it, and hit it. I haven't seen it done, but it would be cool if you reached out to the players involved to see if they'd be willing to go over their thought process on these hands.

when Dan walked in with that drip you knew he came to play...I'm kind of flabbergasted Bobo folds to such a brick river. Sure dan's value hands is trips+ but all draws missed and there were a lot by the turn. all the straights, all the flushes/combo draws all the random over card big pair/Ax suited blockers. I think if you're gonna call turn you have to call that river right? or am I just a fish? what Is Dan's actual value range here other than random four bet bluffs that flopped trips and maybe KK AA? is he playing 1010-QQ this way? thanks for the commentary BTW...
