But if I take my snorkel off, no one will believe my street only lifted truck on 37s is actually a hard-core overlanding rock crawling dune jumping river fording full bodied Tennessee hill killer.
I totally hear that you're not anti-snorkel. But looking at some of the trails and rock crawling you do. I think you would have damaged all those fenders/panels if the snorkel wasn't on there anyway. it might have saved more damage than it created. Just a thought.
I agree; I suspect it probably saved more damage than it caused by being squishier than the metal body panels. The biggest benefit of snorkels is indeed keeping dust out of the engine, with deep water crossings being a secondary consideration, but as someone who has drowned his 4x4, I don't recommend discounting that benefit!
@@williammortensen1889 only if u drive dead close to the person in-front of you. and in high dust areas you should not drive in the persons dust cloud thats in front of you in case they stop and u run into them. so if you are driving in a safe manner no matter if there are 20 guys a snorkel will always get you cleaner air into your engine
"Cleaner air" lol. The first time you stop/get stuck ( and you will stop and get stuck ) then no more clean air and boom dust cloud caught up to your snorkel in most cases😉👍. Cool video😎.
Great video! Save the fenders and maybe hang them up in the garage. When your channel hits it big someday it will be cool to look back on the two front fenders that started it all!
I put my snorkel on 12 years ago, im here to see your removal to refresh my memory. i need to replace my windshield and safelite told me i have to remove the snorkel and the Light bar...
Even tho I have the arb snokel on mine.. I would say the snokel is more for touring then rock crawling.. tho that does give me piece of mind that arb did there homework when building the snokel and using the right materials. I have one on my tacoma for 10 years now and still looks the same as the day I put it on..
Clicked on this video thinking it may be something about casing a lean condition, or debris ingestion, etc. Saw it pertains to body damage…. Not a straight panel on my off-road rig anyway, so we’re good 👍
I kind of prefer the River Raider snorkel over the long fender mount. But I really don’t need a snorkel for the driving I do so I’ll just keep it stock. I can’t wait to see the finished rig. Those 42” are going to look crazy.
[1:10] I don't think the dust will find its way using the OEM intake easily, probably if you did the test again with the OEM air intake the results will likely be the same.
Ok Iv seen a lot of people about a snorkel and being in a convoy ok guys simple fix get a snorkel sock aka a prefilter it’s not that hard to do they make a round pre filter or a snorkel sock that goes over a ram that’s pre oiled you can reuse it and reoil it or just throw it away and use another I’m putting a borne off road snorkel on my gladiator every weekend it doesn’t see roads it sees rocks dirt etc
Personally I believe a Truck especially one that's used for fun and or is quite old and been well used should look like well.. A truck. A little beaten here and there only means that truck has experience.. I kinda like the look of a truck looking a little weathered.
don't you think removing the fender flares allowed the damage to happen cuz now there is nothing there protecting your fender i have a snorkel on my fj since 2014 no damage to my fender & I wheel harder then most
I actually decided to remove the flares after one was ripped off and did nothing to protect the fender. I'm not saying that having a snorkel will damage your FJ, just that it can, if you hit the snorkel.
So here's another funny thing. A guy (me) walks into a Toyota dealer parts store, after watching Ken bend several tie rods. I order a inter and outers tie rod for a spare. I go to pick them up. And he hands me 2 outers. I had to explain what the difference is between inter and outers. At the dealership!! All you can do is laugh. So let us see if they get it right this time.
Def can see both sides of this , I ripped out my fender flares and then went mudding , needless to say had a shit ton of mud in the intake, so I got a snorkel , but it does get caught on everything pretty crazy , something ya don’t think about when doing this mod
Here in the forests of Canada, dust is not a big issue. Unlike you, I am a snorkel cynic. In nearly 50 years of off roading recreationally and as a professional prospector on 3 continents, I've only ever floated a truck down a river twice. And they were stock trucks and they kept running. I love to ask truck owners with snorkels, how long does it take for the carpets to dry out. None have ever had an answer.
Yes, the snorkel dilemma..I installed mine for dust control and yes, the ebay $100 snorkel can hold the weight of my fj. Luckily it wasn't on it enough to push my sheet metal, it was more of a gentle lean, i was able to back off. Your gonna have one heck of a project. I've only sat in my garage, staring at my fj thinking "hmmm, 1ton axel " but that's as far as I've gone. Lol
It seems that the design for the FJ could be better. Why not design it to insert in the fender earlier and then run down to where it goes into the engine bay. At this point, this seems non-sensicle. The damage is already there. Just chalk it as trail rash.
Will you be trying busywild again once you get the build finished? I think that was my favorite ever trail vid from you, and a comparison would be nice!
Cheers 🍻,, and interesting very perspective 👍. I've pondered adding one. But honestly I don't think I really need it. I do like the inhanced air quality/filtration, but. Two detracting factors for me,, 🤣 water crossings in the desert S.W. are very rare and aftermarket goodies for my vehicle (Mitsubishi Montero Sport) in the States is almost non existent. So I think my decision is obvious 👌. Safe travels, G. In beautiful Boulder City Nv. USA 🇺🇸
Well if you installed the snorkel right and did your breathers for diffs and stuff the snorkel should protect from water coming straight Into the air box not stop water intrusion, and to stop my snorkel from banging up the vehicle I drove more carefully on that side
It actually looked like your snorkel protected your fender compared to the other fender LOL not a great point you made and if you're worried about body damage don't wheel it so hard then
If I install bullbars, someone said I should install snorkel too because front bumper removed and air intake more exposed to water? Is it true? Help me I am a newbie 😄
I'm some cases yes, in others no. I've had the snorkel head contact things before which caused the slight damage to the A pillar. That definitely wouldn't have happened without a snorkel.
Lol stop hitting stuff , but if you are not doing a lot of water crossings or deep holes , it's not needed but it does keep alot of dust out being higher up
things get caught up when you are wheeling, and doors just stop working when you slide into a tree or a boulder.... The solution is a sweet ass exocage.
Hi Ken thanks for telling us your opinion about snorkels, by chance did you ever do a diff breather relocation kit. Can you please comment on maybe your opinions about them if it is really worth it and or necessary to do that type of a mod. Thanks in advance and Happy trails sir!
I've considered it. It's just a matter of supporting tubing out in front of the fender. It would require a pretty long stretch of tubing that doesn't have anything behind it, so it may not be very strong.
No way I'd remove my snorkel, I'd probably just find better lines. Rarely do I hit things while driving but I'm constantly in dusty environments. I feel like a snorkel takes priority over the convenience of running into things.
They’re called brush bars. Though they are used for rock areas as well. There are different styles you can use depending on what type of off-roading your into. They would of definitely helped in the situation you showed in that creek you were in. Pros less panel damage. Cons vehicle is now slightly wider plus the added weight. So tight tracks a bit harder to traverse. If your touring ( I think you guys call it over landing. Correct me if I’m wrong ) then fuel consumption goes up due to added weight and more wind drag. They are well worth it though if your into those hard tracks.
Given the location of the air intake on these Toyotas, a violent splash of water can push water into the engine. Like I said, if a snorkel saves your engine just one time, it was worth having! 👍
Ewww more sculpture material coming up! Hi Ken, what a testimonial for ARB on the strength and durability of their product! I too was impressed that once removed was intact. Just thinking about a video on your trailer update. Is your trailer wide enough to accommodate the build? As always thanks for the share/content.
@@offroadhub.official everyday use. That snorkel is a limited diameter the entire length, then necks down just before it transitions to the forward scoop. Any length of contained air flow is a restriction
G Goett I see what you’re trying to say, but airflow is pretty high. I’ve tested it using a paper towel over the intake. It barely stays at idle and doesn’t suck through when revving.
@@christurner68 I'd have to find a way to make those work with my existing sliders. Those ARB sliders wouldn't cut it. Maybe I'll get a tube bender and make my own.
Vehicles in the military are not routinely leaning close to or against rocks and walls larger than they are. Also their snorkels are usually integrated into their bodies, so they aren't protruding from the side of the vehicle.
I dont think the snorkel damage the vehicle!!! Its kinda hard to admit but its the dumb drivers fault!!! Look there is a damage all around both sides .
Yes, I take my FJ into risky places. The snorkel is literally a lever attached to the fender. When the snorkel catches on something, it enhances damage. Pretty simple.
There are lots of holes in the body for options. The taillights, door handles, and mirrors all require holes in the body to be installed. Modification doesn't equal damage.
I’m in the South Island of New Zealand and can’t go off roading here without a snorkel, a lot of our trails have deep rivers and alot of watery mud bogs iv seen quite a few people drown their truck thinking they can go threw a deep river without a snorkel lol so for me the snorkel stays 😁
Agree with you. Thought about adding a Snorkel for the cleaner air in dusty environments but concerned the Snorkel especially on the pillar getting snagged on branches since I drive more forest roads than desert
There are specific snorkel head socks for dusty environments. Where I live, water crossings are a regular feature to off-roading, bonnet and windscreen depth is fairly common. I’d never run a 4x4 in New Zealand without a snorkel. Unless she was a street queen!
Awsome information and not every one is in the same situation as you. All your doing is adjusting to the situation you are in. I'm sure when thr new set up is done you will slap that snorkel back on.
I’ve seen a couple of your vids. Your def having fun with YOUR vehicle. I’ve seen some damage on your rig. Maybe in lieu of a snorkel maybe some body armor is more in your alley
We went with a snorkel cause here in the Texas Panhandle area with dust and dirt get to be crazy and it helps keep the filter cleaner. Also had a friend recommend to turn the intake around backwards it helps reduce it even more. Backwards it also helps with you get a really heavy wet snow so it doesn't clog up as easily. Now If I was stirring up a lot of my own dust then it turned forward would be better.
yea, I have a arb snorkel i have never put on. I live in a very wet rainy muddy environment, plus volcanic dust. I still have really not had a use for it. I am going to put the scubba kit on for water crossing; but, basically if I ever cross something deep enophe to need the snorkel, I got way bigger problems before the water getting in the engine is a concern. damage is being done somewhere else (e.g. electrical systems, etc). still might someday, and I was waiting to raptor line the entire FJ first and add bumpers.
With 35s on my tacoma and little to no fender liner, i basically NEED a snorkel otherwise my intake is in the wheel well. Not even for water crossings but for wet/snowy/dusty roads
