How a successful teacher, principal and IT manager wound up homeless |

As a former teacher, school principal and state manager at a large IT company, Scott Butler never imagined himself homeless. But that was the reality for the 56-year-old after a medical diagnosis and a relationship breakdown. A lack of affordable rental properties combined with being on a disability pension, made finding a property seem like an impossible task. Scott is also a member of the LGBTIQ+ community, which is over-represented in homelessness statistics. Since his own lived experience, Scott has become an advocate for more affordable housing. His advice to people is ‘Don’t ever think ‘I’m safe, it’s not going to happen to me.” #HW2020

Scott's absolutely right about homelessness. Nearly happened to me. I have my own home but no family and few friends but I moved fast to save myself and a mortgage broker helped me through the minefield of securing my home from foreclosure and I sold everything I didn't need then gave up everything else for one year. Made it out in one piece. I hope Scott is able to return to a normal life and I wish him luck.

Austria has to change that, in the Netherlands we pay more taxes, but when we get ill, you still get 80 % of your salary paid, so people can pay their rent and utility's, and we dont be come homeless. And when people loose their jobs, they get paid 80 % of their salary for about 2 years, and after that you will get social payment from the government, and suplements for your rent and health insurance, that is more human.

Trouble is our housing market here is all privatised, very very limited public housing so of course when there is shortages on rental the private renters prioritise ppl with full-time work, so many many marginalised groups get left out, mostly people on disability/support pensions, single parents and elderly or those who work part time. Its awful, we need a rehall of the state housing system here in Australia.
@BrittleSun
@BrittleSun 2 года назад
Australia no longer has a safety net if you get seriously ill. Limited sick leave is available through some jobs, but if you’re sidelined from work for a significant period of time, you’re on your own. It’s also very difficult to access disability payments if you become disabled. Lots of cancer sufferers end up in poverty &/or homeless in Australia.

I believe in facilitating recovery, through the state/country~it boggles my mind how much tax revenue, housing sales are bringing in and even a small percentage of those sales, if appropriating properly, could help develop and secure, a working living arrangement for people like this man and his dog and the tens of thousands who deserve better. We should not have to depend on people’s charity. There needs to be a strong safety-net, and not just for extreme cases like this. We are all getting sick from worrying about future, illness, getting old,… this is not a way to live. People need to start demanding and getting their fair share. Interestingly I found there is a strange comfort in being homeless. The comfort of knowing there's nothing left to lose. it takes a while to adjust to hygiene and toileting but after you find a way... It's easy to become comfortable in being pre-clouded from society. You no longer have to compete, maintain the public face, stress is absent. You are just numb to the world built by man and again in-touch with the discomforts and comfort of the natural world. I feel greatly for all homeless regardless of the cause and give money to them regularly without judgement because it's not for me to judge. But there are occasions where I still fear returning to that life. It's a fear that also offers relief. A paradox of sorts I guess.

It seems that we have two problems in the world, homelessness and a looming food crises. Why not turn empty malls into food production systems and house the homeless in those malls to work in the agro business? Governments are not clearly thinking about solutions. We should be packaging food for long term storage- the weather is changing rapidly and growing zones are going to go offline. Let's put people to work growing and preserving food. Such a waste of human ingenuity and skills. We need the homeless working. Its not an option. This suffering is unnecessary, there are solutions.

It's not that simple to get homeless people to work. Most are battling depression, and/or have mental issues that come from some traumatic past events, or have a chemical imbalance that require medication and physcalogical therapy. So working becomes difficult. Doing some of the smallest things in life are a challenge. Things such as get up to wash yourself, walk to the store, put on some clothes, even getting yourself to seek help is a challenge. As crazy as it sounds. You can give someone who's homeless a substantial amount of money, and many. Not all. Would not use it to stabilize themselves and become part of society. They might spend it foolishly, or give it away, because they've become so accustomed to their lively hood. That they don't know how to go about changing it. Some would spend it on drugs. Which society says that that's why they're homeless, but why did they start doing drugs to begin with? What event, or what led them to do drugs? Some didn't start doing drugs till they became homeless, or went through some detrimental event in their lives. Just living in the streets alone is degrading. Let alone the way people treat homeless is enough to drive you into a severe depression. Lower your self esteem, and feel like no one cares. So why care what you take to escape the pain of reality. So it's far more complicated than simply putting them to work. I would say that many don't care what you or I even think about the situation. I wish I knew what the solution to it all is, but I don't. I can only hope, wish, and pray for anyone that has gone through whatever it is that caused them be homeless. To be guided, find peace within, and recover to the livelyhood they once had. God bless

Even with a medical issue, I don’t understand how he’d become homeless after not only being a teacher, but also a principal and IT manager (both generally high-paying jobs). There’s something missing here.

I ended up homeless around 20 years ago. It happened out of the blue I lost someone very close 2 me. It was the most horrible experience ever. I made friends and I lost 2 because they just couldn’t Handel it. The worst thing was that I lost contact with those 2 people only to find out they were gone some ten years later.

Like most Australians, never save their money for a rainy day.. just keep thinking the good times will never end.

"Like most Australians" Dude...we're a population of over 26 million, so there's some variables there I reckon...70% of us live in major cities...are you aware of the cost of rent, fuel, food going up, the average salary of a teacher? How are we supposed to put money away when it's all being spent on living ya nonce. This guy was in hospital for 6 months, and had a recovery period of 24 months...I may have some savings, but not 2 years salary worth.

It can happen to anyone. I made 6 figures, had investments & savings. Then I got sick; 10-yrs. My money lasted for that long. Finally I was better and started working again. Unfortunately, I got sick again but this time with no financial backup. It can happen to anyone. I wish I had cultivated a complete financial team, therapist, a medical doctor and friends who knew to step in to help once I got sick and really couldn't think for myself. A team would have saved me.

First of all thanks for sharing your story. A grown man crying, breaks you to see that. Unfortunately I am hearing this is normal now for homelessness, mostly with Qld has increased. I heard about a young pregnant with a young child was living in her tent in winter and trying to get housing.

Hate how society disposes of you when you don't have the financial means when stricken with illness. It's like you are being punished for being sick. Humans do not seem to be human when it comes to money.

Rents are too high for single people. I worked and paid tax in the UK for 39 years before becoming ill and being unable to work. I get £259 a month to live on. How much do you think rent costs in London? Five times more than I get. After paying utilities there's no money for food. My landlord has started eviction proceedings. As I can't walk I'll be living on my doorstep as I have nowhere to go. Even the economic migrants who illegally enter the UK are better off than me. Our government puts them up for free in a hotel with free wi-fi and three meals a day. Oh, and don't forget the £30 a week pocket money they get and the £500 voucher they are initially given to buy clothes etc. "British born taxpayers last. Foreigners first.". That's the mantra of the British government.

I was homeless for 6 months living in a Landrover Luckily it went, I just spent most of the time living on the southern coast of western Australia fishing and snorkeling every day until the house I was waiting to rent became available but yeh I could've been stuck in the city sleeping in the car ..I was for a while a few weeks in the winter before it warmed up a bit, it was dreadful and demoralising

I m not so clear about what exactly happened. Did he have to pay hospital bills and went bankcrupt? I thought Australia government cover their citizen for free. While recovering, did he get some sort of disability benefit? no savings?....lots of missing information here
