@@802Garage One of my favourite Aussie channels has a deeper look at turbos and Superchargers (same thing, different mechanics), but it goes on for 25 minutes. Yoda is good at what he does though. Twenty-five minutes in front of a camera is a big thing for him LOLZ.

Yeah I don’t know much about how the oil stuff works or if I even need a cooler thing for it since my golf cart has a small engine. It’s a tillitson 212 pumping 11 horsepower

@@SmallEngineStudios_ You won't necessarily need an oil cooler, but depending on the type of engine, it may not have a built-in oil pump so you may need an external oil pump to supply the turbo. Check out BoostedBoiz turbocharging their shopping kart.

@@ssraven1032 Now ya know! On the other hand, a supercharger is powered by a belt on the engine. They do make electric turbos now, which technically are electric superchargers that look like a turbo, which are powered by a motor. Very rare though. There are also electric hybrid turbos which are powered by the exhaust and have an electric motor to spool up faster.

It will make as much boost as the turbo is capable of with the given setup. Usually means blowing the engine unless it's crazy built or the turbo isn't too small.

@@JimmyHondaRacing12 Unfortunately turbo size is very complicated. A lot of people give a general size in mm based on the inlet of the cold side, but the most important dimension is actually the larger side of the compressor wheel. Without knowing the sizes of the turbine and compressor wheel, you can't tell a whole lot other than a theoretical max horsepower haha. Do you know the brand and any details of your turbo?

@@802Garage haha ya I understand i totally hear you. My turbo is an emusa (ebay) t3/t4 turbo. I got it so long I can't get a copy of the order to see which size it is. People have "told" me it's a 58 mm turbo... I have no idea lol.

It does create a restriction, but this is how any turbine works. It restricts flow to some degree to turn linear flow into radial motion. It doesn't create nearly enough pressure in the exhaust path to slow the pistons moving up significantly. Part of this is of course the turbine shaft riding on a very low friction bearing of some type. Think of it like blowing through a straw or blowing through a straw that has a tiny fan in it. The air you blow will still go between the fan blades with pretty minimal resistance, but it will also spin the fan. It's not like trying to shove play dough through a turbine or even water, because gasses can both compress and change direction quite easily. Hope this makes sense. Basically, there are some parasitic losses, but they aren't drastic and the power added by the boost is far greater than the losses.

Correct, the exhaust turbine and compressor wheel are connected by the turbine shaft, which is permanently connected to the turbine wheel. The compressor wheel slides over a narrower part of the turbine shaft and is secured with a nut.

@@dyyl29z20 There are two types of turbo bearings, journal bearings and ball bearings. Both are lubricated by oil. Journal bearings are just metal rings that sit between the housing and shaft, and yes they float on oil, but they do tend to spin as the shaft does, it's just not imperative for function. Ball bearings are like a skateboard or wheel bearing and have a series of captive balls spinning in races. They definitely spin, but also rely on the oil to mitigate metal to metal wear.

Yep exactly the same! They generally will not have a wastegate, and there are other technologies on large turbos such as variable vane geometry, but the basic concept is identical.

We definitely like our shortcuts! I think many German phrases are also much shorter in English. Front heavy may have at one point been heavy in the front or heavy in the nose, but front heavy means the same. Sequential twin turbo charger system is essentially the same as twin turbo. Interesting stuff!

@@nealhemminger7604 I'd check how much play there is in the shaft. Take off the intake and if you can wiggle the shaft in and out more than say half a millimeter there's likely an issue, and if you can wiggle it side to side enough for the blades to touch the housing, it's fully blown and I wouldn't drive in it more. Or if you can see damage from the blades touching the housing. If it has a lot of wobble, not just a little, but isn't touching, it may just need a rebuild. The other option is that oil is backing up somehow and the drain is not draining properly.

Great question! The number 1, 2, and 3 answers are oil, oil, and oil! Make sure it has adequate oiling, make sure the oil is changed, and make sure it has adequate oil drainage. Clean and consistent oiling means a happy turbo while a proper drain means no smoking. The next answer is heat mitigation. You want the CHRA to stay cooled, which is primarily done via oil. Keeping oil temp in check will make a big difference. Allowing the turbo to cool before shutting down will reduce oil coking inside. If the turbo has provisions for water cooling, they should be used. Next is making sure it has proper filtration, don't let foreign objects in. Also make sure there are no post turbo boost leaks as those can create overspeed conditions. Next would be making sure it has adequately sized exhaust and proper waste gating. Don't want too much restriction and don't want leaks or boost creep. After that it's making sure it's sized properly for the engine and boost levels. Too small and it will overspeed and self-destruct. Too large and it can surge. I'm not going too into detail on the final points, but most important is definitely oil!

@@802Garage I used an adjustable internal wastegate and put in a spring that puts me at 5psi. The turbo is so quiet. But it's nice to be able to merge with traffic with a sense of purpose.

Sure! You'd just want to avoid anything that effectively lower octane rating. To know which additives do that you'd have to research it. Even then I doubt many have any significant impact. Many claim to increase it which would be good.
