Guys the violin is already broken. You can see a crack next to the F holes, and many things dissassembled. He was using a old broken violin for this. Nobody smart would ever use a good working violin to scratch on purpose.

Yes, there is a very easy and perfect way to repair any scatches or holes on ebony parts, fingerboard, tailpiece, bow frog etc, and after repair no one can tell the difference, even yourself. I need to make another video to show how to do this, not by words. Thanks.

scientific studies have shown that the best varnish for violins is ..............regular hardware store spar varnish the solvent that will melt it is mineral spirits alcohol will melt spirit varnish to tint the varnish if necessary artist oil paints for oil varnish, alcohol based dye, like shoe leather dye works well, for spirit varnish, all of those things are very cheap

so many complaints in this list from commenters.... Saying things like, "I can still kind of see scratch." or some starting off by saying, "no real luthier would ....". Well, folks, there are many levels to do the same job depending on what the customer is willing to pay versus the overall state of the instrument and the value of the instrument before and after repair. What he's doing here is showing the average youtube violin owner with a very low priced, beginner violin (under $500) how a scratched varnish (not also a deep wood gouge or any other complication as well) a method that average owner could afford to have done by a luthier to mostly hid a scratch that has changed the reflective value of the affected varnish from the opaque scratch to a translucent state again by reflowing the original varnish in the affected area with a "special liquid" that works on the original finish to reflow it temporarily. He is not just "applying a stain and calling it a day" nor is he adding more new lacquer to the area to refill all of the gouged out original varnish so that it can't be totally hidden under all light conditions. WHY?? Well in short.... THAT WOULD PROBABLY COST MOST (OR ALL) OF THE COMPLAINERS COMMENTING HERE MORE THAN THEY PAID FOR THEIR CHEAP E-BAY VIOLINS TO BEGIN WITH! What you see in this video is the most honest an economical approach to repair such scratch in a beginner through intermediate student violin that a Luthier could offer you; anything more would be picking the violinists pockets! So, folks, if you can't afford a violin worth the more expensive kind of repairs beyond what you see in the video, your local professional luthier in your town will probably talk a good talk about how not to get your violin repair advice from online and then, proceed to tell you how hard of a repair this kind of varnish scratch is, tell you to come back to get it in a week but then.... he will tag your violin, walk it into the back room to whip out his own bottle of the same "special liquid" and then he spends 5 minutes doing the very exact same thing you saw in this video! lolol DON"T BE SO QUICK TO JUDGE Mr. OLSEN... just sayin', ya' know....
@DivaDeb1234
@DivaDeb1234 3 года назад
Would this work on older violin?
@grinninggoat5369
@grinninggoat5369 3 года назад
@@DivaDeb1234 , take it to a lutheir and see. Ask specifically if just reflowing the finish is possible. If there is a wood gouge then maybe not. Also, Old violins don't necessarily use the same kind of finishes as used today. They would have to see what the type of finish is and what would, if possible, reflow that existing finish into the scratch.
@grinninggoat5369
@grinninggoat5369 3 года назад
@@DivaDeb1234 P.S.- if for no other reason to take to luthier than just to find out what the type of finish is, you could then apply a little research yourself to know what exactly to use to reflow it yourself. Usually a small bit of thinning or cutting agent for that specific finish is applied to reflow it. You would need to know exactly what your finish type is. New finish types on cheap instruments with synthetic stuff may not work well to reflow.

Clean the surface of area, rub area with 0000 fine steel wool and then using a mixture of equal amounts of mineral oil and vinegar rub over the stain. It's not an ancient Chinese secret. Kind of stupid and rude to do a video and not help others but, I guess that's what a divorce can do to a fellow.
