How a waste-to-energy plant works

We are Jane Joyce, Sarah Lever, Clare Sims and Paul Weston from the engineering history educational charity Engineering Timelines. This movie documents a visit to a waste-to-energy plant in north London. We've added some animation that explains the workings of the process of generating electricity from rubbish.

To stay away from CO2 exhaust, they can gasify the waste (to make Methane gas) and use it to run the Fuel Cell Generators. Many waste municipal districts in US have done it. Other way, use plasma to burn your blue gas at high temp in turn, less CO2 produce, then make more electricity from Plasma Generator. Just a thought.....

I'm from Australia and had a tour of the London Waste Eco Park back in January 2011 and was extremely impressed with the plant. First of all I couldn't believe the size of the waste to energy plant, it was enormous. I have also been won over by waste incineration, it really is the future, you can only recycle so much, you still have garbage that can't be recycled. If you throw away metal it can be recovered through incineration, however not so in a landfill. Australia really needs these.

I was wondering about the fly and bottom ashes as well. You make a good point regarding the size reduction based on the efficiency of the plant (supposedly >90%) but burning all that plastic can't be better than putting it in a landfill. Of course, if everyone became more recycling-conscious, at least that would make the burning process cleaner. That, and more biodegradable plastics.

It has its downsides, besides the super filters inserted it emits a bit of bad stuff. However with low dmizio4of these, they just disolve in atmosphere and filters need to be cleaned and stored later too. However you get Rid of that in storage you can keep it safe.

Good to know.It taught me a lot.We need to increase our renewable electricity generation in India.Which is upto 50,000 MW only.If we increase it by the time power shortage reduce and also the problem of waste management.Of course we are using waste to create roads but it is not good enough and we need to think biologically too.I want to know from the people who created this video. How to tackle with CO2 emission percentage?

Burning is better than a land fill. Because in the U.S. the EPA has strict regulations in place to ensure environmental impact is limited and these companies almost always exceeds those. At Covanta Energy does and that is why they set the industry standard. But recycling is still an even better step added to the process!

Ash is often used as a fertilizer. I never said that burning garbage makes aluminum and/or steel, however I was addressing what bosebucks375 had said which was often when burning garbage food or drink cans (steel and aluminum respectively) are left in the garbage and when subjected to heat can release some vaporized metal due to the reaction of heat and oxygen.

I want to see one of these in NZ. We are a small country producing a massive load of rubbish every day. The Govt can reduce it by bringing in more recycling schemes (some towns & cities have none at all) but most cities have curb side recycling, but not everything (only 1 &2 plastics, glass & paper/cardboard and tins & alloy) . We need more opportunities to recycle more plastics & organic waste (without having to pay!) So much more NZ Govt could do, but seem ignorant (we are far behind some other countries!) And then whatevers left, a plant like this would be ideal to burn off and then make power.

The best way would be use for heating and electricity or heating only. Because you loose when spinning turbines, we have solar energy for that.... Heating is efficient in northern European countries. Summer it could be used for electricity, winter heating. Also These filters need to be kept in pristine condition. Because some people still do dump batteries and dvds in the rubbish bin.

And you can use the Sun. Its called solar power! Still costs big money. I was quoted $10K! to have a solar power system installed on my roof, would power my house all day & night and what I don't used gets sent to the power co but in winter/overcast days when not much UV gets thru it used power co power. So anybody can use the Sun, but will always cost no matter what you do. Also never get free power, cos someone has to pay to make the power & distribute it & contain it.

It is impressive! But I need your support If you are responsible, I am going to ask you one maintenance question please. I am junior maintenance engineer in a "Waste to Energy Plant" and I am faced a problem of miss- alignment(jump) of the chain from the pulley in a long(about 100m) of the ash conveyor; however we can't retain back the chain to its original position even by pulling with heavy duty loader. What do you think the best option to get retained to its normal position? I will be pleased If you have any suggestion to the problem from experience or else
