Alkane Energy has been converting methane from coal mines for many years now as Lanchester Wines has been converting heat from coal mines. I can remember that certain people were against Alkane Energy as they thought (incorrectly) they were fracking!! They need to take advantage of these environmentally friendly methods of energy
I worked for an Edinburgh firm that did this in two residential homes, about 25 years ago. Took the water from two old coal mines. One in Fife and the other in North Lanarkshire. Worked well, I recall. Smaller scale than this guy keeping his wine at an even temperature though.
Heat pumps are nothing new nor high-tech fancy however having 20ºC water is useful. Some comments asked what powers the heat pumps - electricity and how much does it cost - generally it is about one third of the heat you produce so 1 kWh of electricity will "create" 3 kWh of heat.
It will actually be much better than that. Heat pumps get exponentially more efficient the closer the input and output temperatures are. Stepping from 20 to 25 degrees C is a very small change in temperature so a very high efficiency should be possible, probably somewhere in the region of 10x electricity.
My fathers older brothers worked in a coal mine in Salford Manchester during the early 2oth century, this mine (Pendleton Colliery) was the countries deepest coal mine at the time and temperatures reached over 100 F at the coal face, the mine was shut in 1938 and the shaft covered. but deep mines do and can provide temps upwards of 75 f.
Geothermal heating is a great idea for space heating. But I'm afraid re-purposing flooded disused coal mines for geothermal space heating have limited application and may be viable only if the mine happens to be conveniently located next door. The costs of an underground heating pipe network and a geothermal heating plant for large scale deployment may not be cheaper than distributed geothermal space heating systems for individual buildings. There are good reasons why you don't find heating plants for city space heating needs.
It's not really geothermal heating. It's just using the thermal mass of the large volume of water as a giant heat sink for heat pumps. Taking advantage of these mines where they exist just increases the heat pumps efficiency.
It makes no sense, we have lots of coal in the UK, it's relatively cheap and would give people greater energy independence. You would think if they can throw what seems like unlimited funds into remote control cars why couldn't they have figured out how to burn coal clean.
We know how to burn coal clean, it just costs an absolute fortune to capture all of that carbon to the point that most other power sources are cheaper.
This is simple but impactful idea to use abandoned coal mine as geothermal energy source. Nothing is invented, but well applied existing technologies with a fresh new point of view.
@switchedon... 'global warming' is only proven depending on whos' opinion you believe. Climates have been changing for thousands of years. How much £££money is made by the masses of climate 'experts' thesedays?🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yes,coal production has deducted 94% from UK its a high level. Abd what to do the mining are not producing much as they want.and making problem as flood etc..ot the surrounded areas house.as he said we hope everything would keep calm.
Geothermal heat pumps have been around for decades. You do not need to be near a abandoned coal mine to use it. You just need to pay for a more expensive heating system.
@@DavidGetling You can't rapidly build nuclear power plants, they're much more complicated than other power plants. Nuclear is a large part of the climate change solution, but it isn't viable everywhere so we should look to as many different technologies as possible.
If they are using renewable electric power (on site wind turbines) to power the pumps, then yes it is. (Not having to pay for electric or gas heating saves a lot of money for a massive building like a warehouse.)
Green nuclear doesn't exist. Nuclear energy is the most expensive way to produce electricity - it always was - receiving massive subsidies and support via the arms industry. The alternaitvess are consitent and a lot cheaper. All of them.
@1968Christiaan Nuclear has less carbon footprint than any alternative green energy. The technology of green energies at the moment is not cost-effective. This is one of the main reasons why we are finding in the West ourselves in an energy crisis. In Germany, only one nuclear plant left to close down, and guess what? They are burning coil and gas to drive their electric cars.
Old coal mine shafts typically collapse after a number of years. My uncles house fell into one eventually due to this process of collapse in South Yorkshire. In reality, the pipes would be crushed and fractured by this process over time. It really isn't a feasible answer to our energy needs apart from a very localised heat source if your facility is right over the shaft and it is very near the surface. Also, the cost of the process is not revealed in the video. The heat is not 'free'. There is very significant capital and running costs involved in this process.
Instead of this Rube Goldberg mechanism, what about deploying SMRs on the site of former coal power plants, reusing as much of the infrastructure, such as cooling towers, as possible.
Thats the beauty of heat pumps. The 20C water heats up a cold gas which is then compressed and heats up above 20C to heat your house etc. I wont go into the details, Google it.
How many homes will flooded mines heat, I suspect it's a handful leaving millions of households struggling with covering energy bills and even cooking. This is the usual bollocks from the beeb and all
during the Cuban crisis the Americans became worried that Russia would be abls to place nuclear missiles within 70 miles on mainland America, Kennedy got alarmed about this and basically threatened WW3 saying he would sink the Russian ships carrying the missiles, sounds very much like the Ukrain situation but in reverse. Putin asked the Ukraine not to join NATO, after all had NATO allowed in the Ukraine missiles would have followed and guess where they would be pointed. Seems to me what goes round comes round. Cuba, now the Ukrain, Kennedy tactics being played out by Putin. I do not agree with the war in the Ukraine, but can see why Putin was not happy.
It doesn't have the best coal in the world and its expensive to mine. Higher quality coal is available worldwide with higher calorific value and less sulphur.
Oh wow the Eu said coal mines is bad for the environment to the poor countries but now after the war and russia has put a stop they opened the coal mines what double standards is this i dont blame india foreign minister for saying Eu problem is the worlds problem but the world's problem isnt the European problem what double standard is this
We should be mining and exporting. Why don’t. BBC and msm focus on Germany and Poland and other Eu countries using hundreds of coal power stations for power ?
@@krashd Well done, if only you ponder a bit on the title, the "Future of Coal." Isnt disingenuous to use a key cause of GHG be try resolve our climate issue. Doubtless, it helps but it would have been better to avoid coal altogether and in any case the solution is too small. Admittingly, calling this lies is strong but so is the title
Te problem is now everyone works from home in UK and Wales their is not enough manual labour to produce coal. In India we have the highest rate of work and produce more fossil fuels then anywhere in the world UK needs to open more workshop for te children
Not mine- run it off my home solar. You couldn’t be bothered to watch the video before making a stupid comment 0:50 “coal production has fallen by 94% in the last 10 years” EVs are not powered by coal
@@EcoHouseThailand The batteries in your EV are almost certainly produced using fossil fuels to extract, refine, transport & manufacture. I’m not knocking your efforts but there are imbedded carbon emissions in most renewable technology.
A question that should have been asked is how much heat capacity is in the mine water? How much energy could be extracted? How many homes could be heated?
So if you can artificially re-create the conditions of the mines, beneath houses built in the country... whilst not providing significant heating, would at the very least stop elderly dying from the cold outright.
That's just geothermal power and heating... the problem is the expense of digging to "artificially recreate the conditions of the mines". It's a significant captial outlay, makes sense to do it on a community scale when building a new estate but is harder to retrofit for individual homes. That's why these coal mines are great, the digging has already been done!
Sounds brilliant my concern is that companies are going to take advantage of this natural source ie water and as more pop up it means less water in the ocean and for us to drink, it also means water becoming more expensive. This will work depending on how much is extracted how often by what companies. The issue is saying it’s a “green” option is un realistic posturing/false advertising unless it actually doesn’t affect the environment.. ie taking from Peter to give to paul
Yeah and other places in the world will consider this cooling. Like any tool, different people will use it differently. But it still won't be enough, because it does not address the heart of the problem. Anything that does not address the root cause will only cause more global warming.
@@iiilllii140 I hope so, but it was not declared, and likely would have been, if so. There are many carbon zero companies getting credits while burning more fossil fuels.
This was my idea, I never get credited for the wonderful work I do, I said Co2 from coal was probably really good for trees n shit, it's diamond food, your hippy scientist measured the commissions from the chimney and stopped their science there, I want 3% of the now booming global coal industry, no joke, brother is getting paid this time ☮️✊😇
Whilst it is encouraging that people are being resourceful and forward thinking, this global PR effort "suddenly" towards abandoned coal mines tracks exactly like the green hydrogen from November 2022. Sound bites to delay, delay, delay. $0.02
Just bury the frozen pensioners there. Poor old things, Heat Or Eat, while the football hooligans got drunk and watched football. Barbarians. Saving the World !! LOL so funny.
