In 2008, researchers with the University of California San Francisco embarked on a study that compared the outcomes of two similar groups of women, each at a crucial juncture in their lives: a visit to an abortion clinic. The groups differed, though, in whether or not they were able to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. It was called the Turnaway Study, named for those who were turned away by the clinic because their pregnancies were past legal gestational limits, and it provides some of the best data we have on the impacts of abortion bans.
Among the study’s findings is the severe financial impact of being forced to parent a new child when someone is already living in difficult financial circumstances. People who seek abortions, especially later-term abortions, are far more likely than the general population to be living in poverty, or otherwise financially unstable. That fact makes it unsurprising that, when researchers asked women about their reasons for seeking an abortion, not being financially prepared was the most common reason. This video offers a glimpse into the financial penalty of parenting under difficult circumstances.
We interviewed several women who had similar experiences to the women in the study. We didn’t seek out interviewees who exactly reflected the circumstances of the study participants (i.e., the length of gestation when they sought an abortion, or their socioeconomic background) but their stories reveal some parallels: most people want an abortion because they don’t feel financially stable or don’t have a partner they want to co-parent with.
The Turnaway Study also looked at mental health outcomes, relationship outcomes, and whether or not study participants chose adoption instead of parenting. Whether or not they chose adoption is relevant to common pro-life rhetoric, which encourages people to give unwanted children up for adoption rather than choose abortion. But the Turnaway Study found that 91% of women who were denied an abortion chose to parent, which indicates that adoption is not a feasible alternative for most people. We interviewed Gretchen Sisson, a researcher who looked at adoption rates and motivations among the Turnaway Study participants.

Something this also highlighted is how fathers are not held to the same standard as mothers. And how the system set up in our country don’t hold fathers accountable. The mother is de facto parent. @zenstarling3899
@zenstarling3899 Год назад
I think that there's an interesting conversation to be had about weather fathers always have a responsibility to provide financial support given that, rightly, they lack the same opportunity to prevent a pregnancy from becoming a child. I suppose we should ask ourselves, if mothers have the opportunity to abort due to financial circumstances, what safeguards we can put in place for fathers who do not have the capability to fund an unwanted child. Perhaps a certain amount of tax based child benefit funding for single mothers instead?

It's 2 sides of the same coin. Fathers are less likely to gain custody of their children even if they fight hard for it. If an abortion is to happen the father has no say even if he wants the child and the mother doesn't (Which the man doesn't have to go through pregnancy but it is still an issue) A father can be forced into child support even when they had no knowledge of conception (rare but it does happen). This only comes to show that abortion is not just a pro-life or pro-choice matter, because the consequences of a pregnancy don't simply end by giving birth, and that's particularly valid in countries without strong social system. It's a matter of taking responsibility, having the resources (incl. financial) and being able to commit long-term - so many things men can easily escape by simply leaving. I just cannot understand how decision makers in the politics/judicial system don't see that.

@@Lebronwski Well that’s a lie lol. I’m from Denmark, and (high) expenses very much still go with child-rearing. Then there’s the fact that our systems, at least in Denmark, have been getting worse and worse lately (similar to the UK), the fact that our sectors which take care of ill and disabled people are awful in many regions (special education especially), the fact that there’s a lot of racism and xenophobia here, etc. The people who are very aware of that, and who know that their child could meet those issues, and that they, as parents, wouldn’t get much support in overcoming them, is probably why some still choose to get abortions. You’ve got to have a very stable position in Denmark to feel safe in bringing a child into our systems. Plus, even if we lived in an ideal utopia, abortions would always be needed, anyway. Because some people just get pregnant and aren’t ready for it, or don’t want it. And some people could be at high risk of becoming physically or mentally ill because of it, or disabled, or risk death. Pregnancies will never be a dance on roses, no matter how supportive the country you are in is (and again, Nordic countries most certainly are not as supportive as they could be) and for some people, having a pregnancy would either destroy their quality of life, or significantly burden it. as in the book Freakonomics, Steven D Levitt says that when crime was peaking in 70's and 80's in the USA and suddenly dropped in the early 90's and people suddenly grappling for explanations. Many were floated around. Better policing, stricter punishment for criminals, a growing economy and a myriad of other reasons. But the true reason was the Roe v Wade decision in 73 that made abortions legal for all in the USA. This led to women of colour, of poor economic background, material abusers and all others who had unwanted or unplanned pregnancies get an abortion. But before that, they had to have a child. And that child was more likely to become a criminal because of the mother's background and subsequent parenting. hence crime was in a growth. but by late 80's, the children who would have been born if abortion wasn't legalized would be in their late teens. An age where they would be at their criminal peak committing violent crimes. This led to low criminal population in all. hence the drop in crime rates. Its true that overturning Roe v Wade sent USA by 50 years. But in 20 years, if it isnt overturned back again, we will see higher crimes and more violent crimes.

It's like getting mad at someone for using braces, you can do all you want to prevent crooked teeth but you can't guarantee you won't need braces. Not 100% but most forms of birth control have over 97% success rate. Truth is, many people just don’t want to use contraceptives or birth control. Not sure why but they don’t. My mother had initially thought about terminating her pregnancy when she was pregnant with me. It causes me absolutely no resentment in me towards her. She was in college when she got pregnant with me and if it hadn't been for the fact that my mother has that kind of mentality we see in high level athletes, she would have ended up leaving school and moving back in with our family. She had to send me to live with our family when i was around two and she went on to finish school and start her career. Am seven years older than my next sibling. By the time she had my brother she was in a much better place financially and able to afford a babysitter so my brother could stay with her. She had her third and last child when I was 11 and this one was another unplanned pregnancy. By now we've had already been living in this country and the difference was huge. We were cut off from the large support system we had in our native county and this is how I developed a way too high understanding of the day care issue in this country by the time I was 12. My mother had just started as a home health aide worker so she as at the bottom of the barrel and making minimum wage so she obviously could not afford a high quality day care. She had to pay our next door neighbor to care for my younger brother and to keep an eye on me and my other brother. This was a great women but i would absolutely never ask her to care for any of my children. She raised my brother like she raised her own children and this has caused a lot of arguments now in our family because this brother is completely unmotivated and lacks any direction. I know that the generations get "softer" as they go down the line when when they grow up in a more secured environment and you can absolutely see it in our family. I love my brother to death. He is literally my favorite person in the world but I am extremely worried about having to provide for him under the day i drop dead because right now i just don't him finding a drive to succeed. This video gave a deep look into what it means to have an abortion and along with the consequences that being denied an abortion looks like. It was eye-opening to the inequality that exists even when it comes to abortion. As women, who are more financially stable and have a greater support group back home are the ones who have greater means to get an abortion through having the money, resources, and support to do so. However, women who do not have the financial means or the support of love are the ones that do not get an abortion if it is because of money resources, or the support of those around them. Due to this, these women are the ones who get conner and have no other option than to have the baby even when they are not in a place to be able to take care of a child. For many of these women they are barely making ends meet as it is and if the women already have children to care of then the arrival of an unplanned baby makes the financial burden on the family even bigger this would affect the children that are already there as their already limited resources will be more reduce to be able to care for the baby. Individuals that were struggling or barely getting by before a baby when abortion was denied and left having the baby and so things just get ten times harder for them and everyone involved pushing many to the poverty line or even stay therefore even longer if they were there even before the abortion was denied. This report was very helpful in trying to help see the side of the story of certain women who are having a double struggle when it comes to abortion not does the government trying to take away the autonomy of women to have an abortion these women also have the barrier of the resources to be able to have an abortion. These women in underserved populations have the ethical right to not only have the autonomy to decide if they want to have an abortion or not but they should be better supported in these as an denied abortion can have serious consequences for everyone in the future.

Being treated with a supportive family really comforts me as a child growing up, knowing that I was an accident. 25 years later I'm thankful that my mom did continue with the pregnancy and i'm becaming a pride of the family. All this might work only bcz i was born on an economically stable family, supportive neighborhood environment, well respected, and loving family. It was well discussed with my fam and my mom about her pregnancy, and she was allowed to continue through her life, get degree, work and became successful while also helping me grow with my grand parents. So, the point is, i'm neither on "pro-life" nor "pro-choice". But allowing someone to get abortion as last resort option, and providing woman with some level of child bearing education, family support assesment, or any planned parenthood education before abortion is better option in my opinion. However, I'm totaly understand and will support abortion when a family isn't stable enough to have kids.

Incoming wall of text: The primary benefit of procreation is to spread genetic code. There are other obvious benefits, but this one is why most people don’t adopt even though it is cheaper (compared to medical bills), there are plenty of candidates in need of a good home, and you don’t have to deal with a pregnancy altogether. This spreading does not include only immediate offspring, but their offspring as well and so on. Allowing someone to wait until they are ready to raise a child properly will result in a better spread of genes in the long run and overall, higher happiness. Restricting this choice and forcing one to prematurely care for a child at the wrong time will likely stagnate the genetic spreading and can be considered an act of “genetic cleansing”, or put more bluntly, “soft-core poverty genocide”. Because of all of this, it’s no surprise that an overwhelming majority of those who oppose abortion rights are already well-off economically.

If I heard my mom complain about how much of a burden I was it would break my heart. My son is the best part of my life I could not imagine life with out him.
