There's an additional reason for why Trung Sisters aren't Riders in their base form but instead Saber, and that also ties with the imagery of elephants in their depiction. The image of them riding on elephants are famous Vietnamese history imagery and have became ingrained to their culture, but it's unknown if they are actually elephant riders for real in their time. In essence, they might not be elephant Rider in their lifetime, but could be one as a heroic spirit. Saber might not be their most fitting class, but they do qualify. (plus Saber also gain Riding skill for their class skill so it's not like they don't have Riding skill). The sisters have not much idea on what are the elephants aid to that. Another way to look at the baby elephants and the Bond Craft Essence is that the elephants they have as a servant is not just the spirit of people who once rebel with them, but also the collective will of rebellious Vietnamese people in general that gives them aid, manifesting the culture depiction in the elephants to aid the sisters as heroic spirits. Trung Trac may doubt herself as a heroic spirit but the elephants are with them, it's the Vietnamese people saying that she and her sister are heroes. Also don't feel too down on your pronunciation, tonal language is always hard. I will kill you though >:V (kidding)
I really like this comment. Human perception of historical events is more important than their actual .. well .. history. At least when it comes to the formation of a servant and their emphasized aspects under a class. Their saber classes may be because of their deification as part of their ascension line. Which came after the rebellion. The argument being that these are the post-rebel sisters after their mutually assisted drowning ... Instead of being the rebel sisters, but with the knowledge of the ending of their story. A subtle, but important difference in the fate franchise.
Another reason can be that they don't directly ride the elephants. After thorough observation, I found that they are usually depicted rally and controlling their marching armies, meanwhile the two person in front of them are actually the one riding the elephants, since doing both at the same time can be quite challenging. This is just a theory though.
@@ashaanime4003 You right they didn't ride themselves, they on the howdah - the platform on the elephant back. Elephant is one of the essential tool in ancient Vietnamese warface. Commanders and generals often rode on Elephant howdahs to have a clean view of the battlefield to better command their army. They are not the only Vietnamese historical figures to be depicted riding elephant to battle. There're also Bà Triệu, Quang Trung...so if FGO's going to add more Vietnamese characters I think they might have elephant companions as well. Speaking of Bà Triệu if she's going to be added she would more likely to be Rider. According to the legend she tamed the Elephant herself and actually controlled it in battle.
It's really cool learning about the Vietnamese, because they are a culture that doesn't seem to get enough recognition. And the Trung sisters especially are badasses. I respect anyone who stands up for their people like that. This was a fun one! Well done!

As for why the Saber class, there is one famous theory among us Vietnamese is that when it combines with append 3 skill, they can counter a lot of Chinese servants most of them are Lancer and Assassin (VN had to go through a lot of wars & most of them are from the China)

YAHOO I've been waiting for this!! My goats Hai Ba Trung, the one and only SEA rep in FGO (so far!!) I've actually talked about this with a friend of mine who's Viet, so I wanted to mention stuff they brought up. 1) There's a line or two where FGO Trung mentions the Mekong Delta, which is a bit weird, considering their story takes place in the north..... The Mekong Delta is in the south.... If anything, they should've mentioned the Red River Delta instead 2) The second ascension outfits are actually still an ao dai! Just a "prototype" version of it. It's still a recent thing, though. 3) Che is also a recent thing, so it was totally not there during the era of the Trung Sisters lol. And it's also a south Vietnam thing!!! overall, though there's some goofy details in their FGO depiction, but they enjoyed this version of the trung sisters! i loved learning more about a fellow southeast asian nation.. here's to hoping a filipino servant arrives in chaldea very soon!!!
Honestly, I'd blame the Throne giving them knowledge about modern Vietnam. Their profile also mentioned that they have no idea what Mekong delta is, but it's sound cool to them.
The first one might have more to do with the fact that there are a bunch of different red rivers, and if they added something to do with the red river resistance or something similar, it might cause confusion. Not an excuse, though, they could’ve just used an alternate name for the ref river
I'll give Fate credit for actually representing many cool heroes, mythology, legends or myths I had no idea existed and actually want to look up and research on my own. I've always loved Greek, Roman, Norse and British myths mainly because these get the most rep in modern films. It's so nice to see lesser known heroes, gods and so on being brought into the light. Although if anyone working at Fate ever reads this I would like to see their take on William Wallace or Spring heeled Jack. Unless they're already in the game or universe as a whole, I don't know.
There’s a theory about why Hai bà was Saber, saying that they were designed to somewhat counter the Chinese Servants. - Saber has an advantage against Lancer, the class of which 4 Chinese Servants are. Saber is also weak against Archer, but there was no Chinese Archer. There’s only Lin Lan, Chinese Saber which proves that in the classes of three knights, hai bà Trưng has more advantages and no disadvantages. - There are 2 Chinese Berserkers, who receive doubled damage from most classes including Saber, and deal x1.5 damage to most classes. This means, once again, Hai bà’s Saber class has more advantages. - There are 4 Casters, 3 Riders, and 5 Assassins from Chinese, which normally deal with neutral damage. But Hai bà Trưng's third append skill allows them to deal with 20 to 30% more against Assassins which is the class that has the most Chinese Servants means that in the classes of 4 calvaries, Hai bà still has more advantages than disadvantages against Chinese Servants. The only Chinese Servant who has more advantages than Hai bà is Qin Shi Huang, so overall, Hai bà Trưng seems to be designed to be effective against the Chinese. On another note, the fact that Hai bà Trưng has many skills that help them and the team in a long battle is a nice touch seems in Vietnam, it is quite common to have the enemy general say something like “We will take Vietnam in less than a month!” and then proceed to be dragged into a years-long war.
As a Vietnamese, I'm amazed by the effort you put in researching this video. When Hai Bà Trưng is first introduced in FGO, a large group of Vietnamese was so conservative about their history that they considered the figure depicted in the FGO an insult to the national heroines. It's a shame that this conservative attitude made them completely overlook the great work of the developers of the game

To answer why they are a saber instead of a rider. The fate franchise has stated multiple times in the past that a servant can be summoned into whatever class prerequisites they met in life, nor are they restricted to the most fitting class either. Hercules is a great example as he is more wildly known as an archer than a raging berserker outside of the fate community

I just want to add some fact maybe the reason why the Trung sister skill have water. In the year 43, Trung Chac and Trung Nhi resisted the Han army at Cam Khe, they both died here. According to tradition, they jumped into the Hat River (Hat Mon, old Ha Tay) commit suicide to preserve their dignity. But, in the Book of Later Han, it said they were killed by Ma Yuan. Ngo Thi Si's book Dai Viet Historical Records also quotes the book Biet Luc as saying: The two women lost the battle, went to Hy Son mountain and did not know where to go. Because the death of the Trung sisters is told through folk tales as a result of jumping into a lake to commit suicide, perhaps that is the reason why their image is associated with lakes and water (Vietnamese lakes are often associated with lotus ponds).
The reason of the minus in their Rebel Charisma skill is an artifact of the original flavor text this variant of Charisma is based from. Rebels with the Charisma Skill (Mordred and Amakusa) have that same minus because their rank is usually one rank lower, but it 'only shines in times of rebellion', in which they get the full rank. In short, in the Trung Sisters' case, the skill would act as a C-Rank Charisma skill except during a rebellion, in which it would act as a B-Rank Charisma skill.

I'd say that unless a depiction of a character is blatantly offensive? It's not something to fuss over. I've yet to cover any US characters from this game, but there are a few - and one of them actually does annoy me a bit. The character in question is pretty stereotypically "American", with their design being more than a little over the top. That I can just laugh about, but they do something else with that character's depiction that... I just don't like it. It's something you should never see in a US character. Thankfully that bit doesn't come up very much, so I can largely ignore it.

Although I haven't played FGO, after watching it, I must say the game portrays the Trưng sisters respectfully, mixing the past and the modern eras seamlessly. The people behind this have a deep understanding of the history, mythology, and the culture, so they deserve their kudos. Had they not made such an effort, they could have encountered backlash, given our sensitivity towards our history and the deep respect we hold for our ancestors. (For example, the Vietnamese gacha game Sử Hộ Vương, which is designed in an anime style, encountered considerable criticism for its portrayal of historical figures in a way deemed as "fan service," making it a shame and their short lifespans game.) Overall, as they have made a character for Vietnamese people who has hear or not hear about FGO I must say they are doing an excellent job. Additionally, I want to write down a poem about the two sisters that has been passed down generation to generation. While I don't play FGO (but have followed the Fate series somewhat), finding out the sisters were in the game was a really cool as a local Viet. And well, I wanted to comment to point out that another possible reason for why their attacks are closely water-based, and some of their arts look like they're underwater/have a face is related to their passing. Having been defeated by Ma Yuan, the sisters chose to take their own lives by drowning themselves in the Red River Delta, as they'd much rather prefer dying an honorable dead than fall under Han rule or execution by their hands. I only realized this today when looking at their design again, reminded by your video lol. All in all, great content. Keep it up m8~
I just got back from vietnam tour 3 days ago. And i was very dissapointed that we didn't visit any place that are related to trung sisters. At least the gacha is generous to me.

I want to share another theory on why there is water element being implemented in their attacks as well as their design and all. When it comes to Vietnamese people, the image of water and rivers have become somewhat inseparable to our culture. For ancient times, Vietnamese people have adapted to a river lifestyle where some of the first prosperous communities thrive on river deltas and river alleys. Rivers are also crucial for cultivating rice, our main food supply. The ancient kings believed irrigation to be so important, so much so that it could decide an entire nation’s wealth and survivability. With that being said, I think it’s a nice touch that the developers actually put water as one of the core elements into the design of a servant representing Vietnamese culture. Yep, you could even say that the ancient Vietnamese people are waterbending masters. ^^
Couple details: Their np has a supportive over time heal, this is because the animation ends with the attack causing a rainfall, referencing their myth where they prevented a famine by causing rainfall The respective sister being mad when you say their Che is better is absolutely Vietnamese family behaviour. I'm of the Canadian diaspora and not really a part of the culture but I know one thing from being around my family and thats that Vietnamese are the biggest humble braggers you will ever meet. Idek if this was intentional but if it was it would be very funny.
as a vietnamese myself, I only see them riding elephants in the arts such as painting or poet, in history classes, they only mention about the main events. It's unknown if they are actually elephant riders for real in their time but building a character this detailed, the Devs kinda have to reads a lot tho...

Saber could work as a class as it's not just for famed sword wielders, I've noticed it's also encompassing a lot of servants who fit into 'great hero' as an archetype It's like how conquerors and kings often slot into Rider
First of all, i cant express how happy i am to see people digging deep and learning of my country history and culture As for why the sister are saber instead of rider. Well despite them being depicted as riding elephants into battle in numerous folk paintings, there actually no evidence of that. Elephants was few and wild during thier time, not to mention very hard to tame, so its hard to believe they were able to bring them to battle. Also Elephants, while very intimidating, not a very good war mount as they very vulnerable to arrows and spears, they also very bulky and hard to manuver The theory is that the sister most likely just ride horses to battle like normal, the image of them riding elephants to war was later added to thier stories by the people to exaggerated the lore. This way the story would be more epic and inspiring. This is why the sister were saber instead of rider, but the designer still acknowledge that the elephants, while not an epic war mount like the stories, were an important part of the sister image, and so they make them tiny. And because they were not real during the time of the sister rebellion and only later added in by the people, i think they are more like some sort of divine beast, or at least close to Nevertheless, i am happy that our national hero become of servant. Our history, culture and folklore are still full of heroic and mythical figures, i really hope type moon and fgo eould explore more and bring more of those figures into the game
I actually did hear some bits about how the real Sisters may not have actually ridden elephants, but it was lacking in sources and I couldn't find that in other places. So, for that reason? I didn't bring it up. Still, the Sisters have become identified with Elephants ever since, and since fame and reputation tend to play a big part in how a servant gets depicted? Having their spirit origins get warped by that did make sense to me. As for elephants in war, they certainly were useful for intimidation - especially against nations and cultures who had no experience with them. A great example of this are the wars between Rome and Carthage, when Hannibal (why isn't he a servant?!?) crossed the Alps and began to beat up the Romans. Ultimately the Romans figured out that elephants, while scary looking, were also easy to startle, and they hit upon the solution of firing flaming arrows at them to make the elephants panic. That's just off the top of my head though - I could be wrong.

Well...in SEA region, a king (or a general) riding an elephant in a war is quite common. Technically, the general is more like a passenger than a rider. The one who controls the elephant is the rider on the elephant's neck. Maybe that's why FGO's Trung Sisters could to get away with not being a Rider.

While not Vietnam and fgo might be the catalyst that got me real interested on Vietnam that doesn't end up being related to the Cold War, would love to see some of the other SEA countries pop in fgo me personally would be the Philippines and how it's one of the few countries that was probably under the grip of a bunch countries in its history and most notably during the Spanish Colonization and in turn how the people then got back the country, because I am really interested how they would depict some of the servants there, Something tells me they'll make Gabriela Silang a Jeanne face because of one of her nicknames or man would they bring Rizal and Bonifacio in, (Got this itch they would glare on Columbus cuz uh yeah)

Speaking of Rider class, 2 years before its official release in JP, there is an artist called "Dishwasher1910", who is one of the main artists of Azur Lane series, drew an art of Trung Sisters in Rider class form. She is a Vietnamese and she drew them as a fanmade Fate servant.
anyone have any explaination why they just pasted the Vietnamese names to the game? since roughly translated, Hai Ba Trung is just "two lady Trung" or better, "the Trung duo" or "Trung sisters". Other asian servants have had their names translated to English while these two kept their original.
I do not. It might be because Vietnamese uses the Latin alphabet though, and so even if it is a different language? It is still in a writing system that is clearly recognizable to an English-speaking audience.
Not gonna lie, they would probably be much better gameplay-wise to be riders, since they don't have to compete in the single target Art Sabers landscape against Dioscuri.
Trung sisters were of Muong ethnic, not Kinh, Kinh ethnic had yet to colonize that area and they did not exist then, and before the 18th century the Kinh pretty much wore the same clothes as the Han Chinese, so no ao dai, no khan dong whatsoever. The Muong used to live in Mê Linh the home town of the Trung sisters, nowadays part of Hanoi, Muong named it M'linh which means large bird in Muong language. Based on the descriptions, the Trung sisters wore similar clothes to the Muong traditional clothes nowadays, but without the headwrap, they also wore large belts, and 4 brooches/hairpin on their heads.
I'm not a FGO player but I saw this video recommended so I watch it and got overwhelmed with the terminologies. But I want to add that their skills have a lot of water probably represent their deaths. After the Han got serious and decided to deal with the Trung sister, they eventually got cornered around a lake where a temple was built today iirc. To avoid capture, they both drowned themselves in the lake so that's maybe a reason for water and lake and pond being prevalent. Another supporting evidence is that it is what Vietnamese people and historian often agree upon and maybe the only surface level research the dev did

It's a quirk of the spelling. Because the localizers chose to use the Vietnamese spelling? That's what I used for this video's title. That ended up drawing in quite a large number of views from Vietnam. It wasn't something I planned, but it was a nice surprise!

How accurate is the FGO? Their death is just so dark, even darker than Jeanne D'arc, the people just refused to believe that was the end of the heroes. They make many mysteries about their end story, even supernatural ones. That is why the 3rd and 4th ascensions look like they have joined the Sith. But well, who am I to complain? They give our national heroes light saber.
I got a theory about why the Trưng Sisters have a lot of water in their skills and swords. As i remember, they sacrifice at a river, and also the word "water" in Vietnamese as "nước" this word sometimes are use to reference the word "country" even though the whole word should be "đất nước".

It more so that it "was" available in Vietnam It was banned because we cannot tax it as there is no Type Moon or Aniplex headquarters in Vietnam unlike for example Mihoyo which have one
@@CrazyYurie On second thought, now that I've look into it deeper, it might come from Cơ Tu's ethnic group or at least a mix of it and other ethnic groups' design. I mean I could see your hesitation, there are 54 ethnic groups and their traditional costumes are varied. Some share the same colorful vibrance that only a trained eye could differentiate. Not me of course, I'm just speculating.

We probably will get a Rider variant of thel one day fore a Summer ore Christmas version of them. Also I am SO upset I wasnt able to pull them. I LOVE Water Servants and water imagery and especley there Final ascension made me fall utterly in love with these sisters

@@crosskyle4614 If you saw my video on Boudica, you would know that I don't hate the character. It actually seriously bothers me how poorly she's been treated by FGO. Boudica deserves better.
