Lyle from C&S Corvettes talks about labor guides used to calculate the number of man hours needed for a repair and just how accurate are they when working on a car or Corvette more than ten years old.

I sure wish I lived by C&S they’d be my first choice to work on my corvette. Love the videos and Lyle has even helped me over the phone what a great business!

Excellent commentary. I prefer stock Corvettes over modded ones because some of the discussed issues will not exist. Time is the most expensive commodity. Two-way clear Communication is the key interaction between customers and shops. Wished your shop was located here in western Pa. Thanks for another excellent video Lyle.

Yes 💯 Stock corvettes seem to be the exception rather than the rule. Owners love to "customize" ... for better or worse 😢

Mostly I do too, HOWEVER, some stock parts are particularly bogus. The interior lights in my C6, for example. Ick. They were all orangish glows. I replaced them with LEDs. Bright white for map lights & cargo area lights, cool blue for the footwells. The interior lighting is both functional and gorgeous. The original owner of the car tinted the windows. I can't see out the rear when backing up at night, SO, I added dual 60 watt LED backup lights. Issue mostly solved. I changed the spark plugs and used the EXACT SAME ONES as stock OEM. Same with erl: Mobile One. So, I vary my approach depending upon the issue. "Fasteners.' I now own two ginormous boxes holding many, different GM connectors.

One of the local garages that struck out when I was trying to establish a service relationship for my C5 was bragging about their electrical guy, saying he used to be a construction electrician. As if I was supposed to be impressed that the guy had previously failed as a construction electrician and moved down a few pay grades to where demand greatly exceeded supply , and caught on with automotive repair. The broken connector that was causing my intermittent start and run problem was found at a dedicated corvette shop, not that place. They did put my car under a lift and then chipped the paint on a support when they opened the car door. Finding reliable service wasn't easy.

It is becoming more and more difficult to find an honest and knowledgeable specialty shop. The good news is, once you find one you know your car will be in good hands and the repair bills will be fair. :) Lyle

"Construction electrician?" Ahaahaha!!! Who in their right mind would think someone with high voltage AC experience can do low voltage DC? They ain't the same!!! Sure, they're both electricity. They're both measured using the same terms: voltage, amperage, wattage, resistance, hot, ground, neutral, etc. Past that, AC dudes or dudettes are not DC dude/dudettes.

Another outstanding video!! Sooo many true facts that most people don't realize when dealing with old cars. I do all of my own work and it never takes the time I think it will. I always allow for the unforeseen broken or stripped bolt. To me it is a fun challenge, but someone who has to pay for the labor does not understand. Keep up the great and informative vids. Stay dry with all the rain.😊😊

I just got my c5 back from the shop today after over 3 weeks. Had a bad oil leak from the timing cover (proven with dye) and they also had to change the oil pan because it warped, it was a pretty penny but they replaced a TON of things while they were there so in the long run, I'm good with it. This is the first major bill I've ever had with it and I've owned it since 2007.

I purchased a set of superpro bushings for my 96 and I discovered that the bracket where the lower control arm connects to on the framing, that square housing where the bolt goes through was so rusted and corroded it was fused into the original bushing. I literally had to remove it with a pneumatic hammer. That turned into a 3 day job that also wound up warping that area so had to bend it back into a square once the bushing was on. Was so crazy I made up my own curse words that week...

Lyle, big fan of your videos. If you can, I would appreciate one about C-5 tac modules. My original one was destroyed in an accident. I have installed several used ones, as they are obsolete, I have even "Frankensteined" one from parts of others, yet eventually I experience similar issues and error codes after awhile. I have diligently made sure all wiring is undamaged even replaced the plastic connector ends th make sure pins are correctly contacting each other. I've heard that certain year tac modules don't play well with other years. Mine is a 2000 base 6spd manual with adjustable suspension.

Can't say I've ever run into Tapcons on a car, but I was helping a buddy replace a convertible top on a Mazda MX-5 and it was held together with plastic drywall anchors (didn't work so well) and zip-ties (worked better than you would have expected). I did by best to replace things with actual nuts and bolts, but I felt pretty dirty after that job :-(

You are So So Right Lyle... being a mechanic all my life, i have seen this over and over again... there will always be those that think that diagnosing and repairing a problem is as easy as pushing a few buttons and going to lunch.. Heavy Equipment was my specialty and even the Contractor expects you to perform miracles and have that machine back in the Field making him Money in less than a day.. and when he pulls up next to that machine and asks how long...! And you tell him.. well if everything goes as planned and Caterpillar has the parts you can expect to have it next Monday.. Today is Tuesday... OUCH..! Then the next question you get, What can you do to limp it along, so we can get the job done.. Either Fix it Right or take it elsewhere is my Response...! Uggggh...!😲

I used to know a guy who worked customer service for a company that made precision impellers, turbines that spun so fast, they condensed natural gas from a well into Liquid , and also turned a profit of about 250,000 dollars an hour , so people got pretty insistent on the phone when problems developed, and that income stream stopped. The saving grace for him was that his product was unique , so highly precise that most of the turbines failed in testing, just blew apart. At one time only the company president was even able to machine one of the parts successfully, which looked like very much like regular aluminum turbine wheels, save for the grooves for the life edge seals . He said the most common failure was for a gas molecule to slip past the knife edge seal that separated the gas from liquid , and cause the condensing wheel to become unbalanced, which then blows apart.

You sold me a non working red light bandit and nobody calls me back, I finally got hold of the company itself who makes them and said they had so many issues with the original they have now redesigned it and the newest model is coming out end of June , unlike C&S Corvettes this company cares about providing great customer service and even though I didn't buy it direct from the manufacturer, they will take it back and send me a brand new model free of charge !

It never fails, whatever you're working on whether a car, motorcycle, lawn mower or wood deck, something is going to be rusted, frozen, break off or rotted. 10 min job turns in to an all day event.
@salvadormonella8953
@salvadormonella8953 Год назад
I think sometimes "it fails." I've had 10 minute jobs last 10 minutes. Sometimes even 9 minutes. So, I find that my experience spanning 55 years fixing cars, motorcycles, lawnmowers, wood decks, pergolas, etc. has paid me dividends. I've gotten used to estimating where things might go sideways. Not always, but frequently, my estimation of required time & labor are gosh near exact. It's only when the project is completely foreign to my experience, like, oh, fixing a clay tile roof. I'm not a roofer. It can't be too complex, but my experience being close to zero automatically causes me to quadruple my estimation of the time to perform the repair. If it looks like a 2 hour job, I'll automatically assume it's actually 8 hours, and expect it could go much longer. That's my story & I'm sticking to it.

Right on anyone with an older car should be prepared to make allowances for any set of circumstances that may and most frequently do come up. Providing the information as these problems appear go a long way for the mechanic and the owner to be on the same page. Also being made aware that many of these parts are unavailable or still in transit from 'China'! TD

Hey, I have been told that my 2006 LS two rear main oil drip is because of the car stays parked most of the time and if we repair it, it’s likely to reoccur. So my question is how much oil should I allow to leak before getting it repaired, and is it true that the car only is driven 5000 miles per year so The leak would come back relatively soon?
@lewnetoons
@lewnetoons Год назад
Unless you are POSITIVE that the rear main is bad, try this first. I thought my rear main was bad, I decided to replace the oil pan gasket just to be sure, it is not that difficult and can be done in a few hours even if you take the occasional break (i'm 59 so lot's of breaks). After the oil pan gasket replace, no leaks, it's been about a year and I only drive mine about 500 miles per year. If you tackle it, be sure an get an OEM gasket, it matters. Let's hope it's not the rear main.🤞
@cscorvetteify
@cscorvetteify Год назад
Rear Main Seals usually fail with age, and your car is 17 years old. Sitting for long periods is bad for any car, especially a Corvette. You really don't want that oil leak to continue, as it can soak many things under the car with oil and cause them to fail prematurely as well. Also, make sure it is the rear main seal and not the oil pan gasket like the other commenter says.... Lyle
@docnsnuf
@docnsnuf Год назад
@@lewnetoons Thanks Lewnetoon I will try that. From one 59’R to another. I appreciate it. The local guy I use in Crystal River said 3.5 hours for the Pan gasket. 9 hrs for the rear main seal.
@salvadormonella8953
@salvadormonella8953 Год назад
@@lewnetoons 500 miles a year? Don't say that! That's a crime against motoring! PLUS, you HAVE to drive Corvettes a bit just to keep them healthy. Oil collects moisture, turns acidic, corrosion sets in on electrical parts, mice eat parts of the engine. Drive it like you LOVE to drive it.
@lewnetoons
@lewnetoons Год назад
@Salvador Monella this is number 9 over the years, the c3's were fun but a mechanical pain, the c4's were fun and reasonably reliable to put a few thousand miles a year on. My current c5 and c6 live very happy and contented lives in the garage with the occasional cruise. As long as you maintain them, they will be happy and mostly trouble-free for decades. 10 miles a week is 500 a year, that is plenty to enjoy, maintain automotive health, and just as importantly when you are my age and plan on these being your last corvettes, maintaining value.

Completely understandable; however, had that 2.6 hours Job only taken you 1 hour, you would have charged for the 2.6 hours. Meanwhile, the mechanic that should have worked for another 1.6 hours on that car is now off to another car double booking and receiving pay for that car. Why can’t mechanics just charge for the job? To me it doesn’t seem ethical to collect money for a job that took half as long as what is quoted.
