Joseph Hudson started work at the age of 12 in the engineering workshops of Birmingham. He trained for 7 years as a toolmaker learning to do by hand the many tasks so often undertaken by a machine today. In these early times he learned the skills that made him a superb craftsman in metal, later forming J Hudson & Co Whistles Ltd., which would become ACME Whistles.

I have an original vintage Acme Thunderer. Don't know the exact year. It was my mother's grand father's whistle that he was using during his service (as a station master I assume) in Indian Railways - colonial era. Loudest whistle I have ever heard. Grt workmanship!

The original came out in 1884, only one year after the Metropolitan police whistle first went on sale.

I have an ACME "Scout Master" on my keyring which I've had for 35 years which I use to call my dogs every day, it must've been blown thousands and thousands of times, it recalls them from hundreds of yards away. My keys went missing, and turned up in a bus depot🤷‍♂️ my whistle snd keys were returned but my whistle had acquired a strange dent, that was 28 years ago. An electric whistle would not have lasted me daily use for 35 years. Thanks ACME.

I have a Thunderer. Absolutely the loudest whistle I’ve ever blown and probably the loudest I’ve ever heard. I played sports in high school and don’t remember any refs whistle being louder than the Thunderer. I’d say, if you absolutely MUST be heard, that whistle will do it.

Yours would be the 60-1/2. The larger version, the 58-1/2, is not as loud.

I’ve had an Acme Thunderer for 50 years, still attached to my keychain. They’re the best whistles ever! Thank you for taking me inside the home of The Acme Thunderer.

I have a Metropolitan whistle over 120 years old. It’s still working and no reason it won’t be working in another 120 years, I doubt you could say that for an electronic whistle. They have a great range, including Military Heritage whistles (WW1and WW2), on their site and also the Cricket Clickers as used by American Pathfinder troops on D Day. Worth a look. Thanks for posting.

They also made the mate's whistle used by Titanic crewmen, they made a new limited-edition batch of them.

2:10 induction coil and high frequency sound waves doesnt sound right. I think you mean magnetic waves which induces eddy currents in the whistles which heats them up. Maybe confused this part with the ultrasonic cleaners which are indeed high frequency sound waves to help clean the whistles before nickel plating? I wish i had one of these whistles they look so cool

Mr. Hudson used to play violin on the streets, busking for crowds. One day, he accidentally dropped his violin and it broke, and its discordant note gave him an idea as to what sound he wanted for his new whistle. Prior to this invention the British police used hand-rattles or nightsticks to mark where the scene of a crime is, but in the case of the hand-rattles their constant use ended up becoming rather fatiguing for them. Only a year after the Metropolitan was released, Mr. Hudson perfected his next invention, the Thunderer 60-1/2 pea whistle, which he came up with to replace the sticks and handkerchiefs that referees had used previously to sanction matches. Whereas the sound of the Metropolitan was designed to work in an environment that would carry through, the Thunderer's sound was louder in order to be heard through the roaring crowds and the games themselves.

Have 2 of the old bobby whistles one from 1911 and one from between the 20s-30s cant be sure when exactly since the patent number around the base by the loop has worn away over the decades, still an obscenely loud whistle though

I found a vintage ARP whistle for a steal at $8. Back in The Battle of Britain, it might have been sounded to warn others of air raids. There is nothing quite like an old J. Hudson.
