This brings back memories! I was in my 30's during this period. In 1988 my brother-in-law Charles and his partner Joey were both diagnosed with HIV. Charles joined ACT UP and participated in many of their actions in NYC. He was arrested once and the police refused to let him have his anti-HIV meds while he was in jail. Joey got full-blown AIDS and died in 1994. He was a brilliant artist, and a beautiful human being. I still miss him. Charles has been living with HIV for for 36 years now, and his new partner has been living with AIDS for just as long. Both are now in their 60's, largely because of the work that ACTUP and other activists did.

💜💔💜 I'm glad that your brother-in-law and his partner were able to actively advocate for this. I'm so sorry that y'all lost Joey, but am glad to hear that Charles and his partner have been able to benefit from the subsequent research.

I took my little daughter to see the AIDS quilt when it was on the Mall in DC. The fact that we lost so many loved ones and the US lost so much love, talent and skill still makes me angry.

Anthony Fauci cited Kramer's letter that cursed him out directly as a major reason that he began to take the crisis more seriously. I work in HIV prevention and it's upsetting how little people know about the history.

It is easy to get discouraged by the amount of bureaucracy involved in developing and approving medical treatments. Thanks for highlighting the important work of ACT UP and how these activists made changes that still benefit us today.

Funny how the Ronald Reagan biopic was announced. Yeah, now try incorporating the time he flat out refused to help Rock Hudson who needed urgent care as well as the downplaying of the AIDS crisis.

The election of Ronald Reagan was one of the saddest points in my lifetime. One man dedicated to reviving the worst of the Nixon years. I feared it would be a downward spiral from there and it has been.

The craziest Regan story I know is that in late 1983, he watched The Day After, and it changed his mind about nuclear war. For his first three years as president, Rondald Regan believed a nuclear war could be won.

In this house, we love and appreciate our Qu33r elders for their hard work protecting our community when the government failed us. But make no mistake, AIDS still rages on, especially in underserved communities such as black MSM. (I do hope they forgive the self censorship no thanks to RU-vid’s comment policies tho. 😩) Also, everyone wanting to know more should read the book And the Band Played On. Worth it on every level.

It's sad how newer generations don't learn as much about the AIDs epidemic that we did in the 90s. But at the same time that does mean that things have changed for the better. Thank you for this video, as it's definitely still prevalent to today. I would also recommend this lovely French movie 120 BPM (Beats per Minute). It's about the Act Up movement in France, and of course as it's a movie has a lot of dramatization but yeah parallels a lot of what was talked about in this video. Very powerful movie.

I was a kid and growing up, didn't know anyone affected by AIDS, but I remember as a kid going from first being aware of it, and used as kinda of a gay joke and moral panic, to becoming understood as a serious, dangerous, heartbreaking disaster, and it was thanks to all these activists coming together, even to teach kids the facts about this disease. What amazing people who took action and made change happen.

More than Covid itself, there was that whole monkeypox virus which then almost became a repeat of the stigma from the ‘80s.
@Caterfree10
@Caterfree10 3 месяца назад
That’s bc monkeypox wasn’t airborne. Covid is but people including CDC officials downplayed this, and now we have fucktons of variants of a full body virus all throughout the world bc god forbid people think of others and wear a mask and stay home for a month.

It's thanks to gay men getting vaccinated so quickly and in such high numbers that Mpox didn't become a bigger outbreak.

"Our direct action was both on target and hilarious. NIAID would have these cocktail receptions, starting at five, after the regular meet- lings were over, and we had these custom fortune cookies made up. We got one of the servers at the hotel to let us have one of those silver trays, and we put the fortune cookies on there-right with the cheese platter, and whatever. The fortunes all said, "NIAID, Form a Women's Commit- tee." When you opened up the cookie, that's what it said. And the looks on the people's faces when they saw what the fortune was in those cook- les, really, there was nothing better." -Let the Record Show, a history of ACT UP New York

“The people with X are the experts on the disease” SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK!!! (But seriously, it’s SO FRUSTRATING being a disabled person and having doctors’/experts’/nondisabled’s opinion prioritized over your own experiences! I’ve had a ton of doctors, teachers, and other people INSIST I didn’t need/“deserve” accommodations because I didn’t fit their preconceived notions!)

Yes!! We're multiply disabled and a system and the way so-called "experts" spread so much misinformation about DID, refusing to listen, insisting our reality can't possibly be real just because it's different from theirs. And in a more traditional experience of disability, we had to wait a year to get a wheelchair because no one would listen to us saying we needed it and kept saying we just had to "build back up our strength" as if we don't have lifelong chronic illnesses.

"what lessons from act up do you think are still applicable today" How about everything? The war on trauma and people suffering, by criminalizing and stigmatizing well documented a medical condition called substance use disorder makes me mad, we need to start using literally everything learned because many many more people will die from it, most likely due to downstream effects of policy decisions.

@@wmdkitty substance use disorder is a well know recognized and diagnose condition. For more people than you want to admit, the choice is either, a quick end, or using for long enough so that u can find something that works and get better. People with chronic pain dont chose to be debilitated by their symptoms, same with people who have executive function issues, and if using a drug gets them through the day without ending it, why arent we trying to help these people rather than lock them in a cage?

Although there are new drugs help slow progress of HIV; they still cost thousands of dollars. The pharmsucical industry still making billions in profits. Even after drugs parents are allowed offer generic versions

My understanding is that some citizens contribute data, some citizens contribute personal experience (e.g. "those with ___ are the experts on ___", from the video), some citizens contribute enthusiasm, and some citizens contribute professional experience, and together they have, in a word, publishable scientific conclusions.
