Laws are intended to maintain order and promote justice, but what happens when those laws promote and spread discrimination and bigotry? Today Danielle analyzes the discriminatory history US law, tracing its origins in colonialism and chattel slavery up through the Jim Crow era and today's mass incarceration.

Origin of Everything is a show about the undertold histories and cultural dialogues that make up our collective story. From the food we eat, to the trivia and fun facts we can’t seem to get out of our heads, to the social issues we can’t stop debating, everything around us has a history. Origin of Everything is here to explore it all. We like to think that no topic is too small or too challenging to get started.

I witnessed a lot of families living in extreme poverty, and they were all white. 7:55 - You neglected to mention that the percentage of imprisoned Black people skyrocketed from 2% to 74% immediately when the new system of 'convict leasing' was signed into law. Also many of the prisoners died while imprisoned, so much so that it exceeded the rate of deaths during legalized human slavery. Others were permanently disfigured by the shackles and chains that were intentionally tied to them in a way so they could not walk normally. They were kept bound by them day in and day out, and the metal cut into their skin and flesh, causing infections and permanent disfigurement.

@matthewbittenbender9191
@matthewbittenbender9191 3 года назад
@@williamhendrix2053you should probably watch less FOX and read more. KKK was founded by ex-confederate officers. Many were Southern Democrats. But the parties today are not the same as they were 160 years ago. After the 1948 election when Truman was elected the Dems started to embrace civil rights and re-integrate the armed forces and government. They were segregated by Wilson in 1914 who was also a Southern Democrat. But those politicians left for the GOP in the 50s because they were wealthy and the party catered to businesses. The GOP has grown more conservative ever since. The Democrats then embraced the working class and minorities. The parties then were nothing like they were today and neither could be considered considered entirely conservative or liberal. And liberal originally was an economic term from Britain used to describe liberal laws for businesses which centrist Dems (neo-liberals) still adhere to. Thinking Democrats today are the same slave owning secessionists today is like thinking Antifa stormed the Capitol.

Been enjoying your videos for a couple of years. This is a good one. Thank you, Dr. Bainbridge, for putting all this information together so that we can know more about our shared American history. I've spent years educating myself on the two original sins that made this country possible: theft of "uninhabited" land from the people who were living here and centuries of free labor from enslaved Africans. Of couse, foundational social structures built in the 1600s did not disappear; they grew into our social structures today. You said so much in less than 15 minutes. Your tone was perfect. I want to hear more of your intelligent voice.

A penal colony or exile colony is a settlement used to exile prisoners and separate them from the general population by placing them in a remote location, often an island or distant colonial territory. Although the term can be used to refer to a correctional facility located in a remote location it is more commonly used to refer to communities of prisoners overseen by wardens or governors having absolute authority.

During WW1 the commander of the US Expeditionary Forces sent a covert memo entitled "Secret lnformation Concerning Black American Troops" to French authorities"requesting" that the French treat black US troops stationed in France the way they would be treated back home, ie segregation, non fraternisation and anti miscegenation and even added that seeing black US troops treated as equals by French whites would have negative effects on the morale and hurt the feelings of white US troops. The French generally ignored such "requests", as they'd been using their own black troops for centuries and had even had several black Generals commanding white troops more than a century before the first black us General

Most people here don't care about the n-word meaning and just say it because it's in their fav rap songs.. Although, with the internet and videos like these, it's so easy to educate ourselves, there is no longer an excuse. Well, maybe there's a language barrier, but nowadays everyone is being taught English in school! But I wish all of your videos would be captioned, not only because of people with hearing impairment, but also to people who aren't as fluid in the language and can't keep up with speaking speed/accents. :)

I’ve taught as an adjunct at a university for 18 years, while finishing my Phd, yet I continued with my regular job as a non-supervisory Metro cop. I’ve been through numerous symposiums, and have audited dissertations, however the way this young lady articulated this information is much more interesting because she’s very charming with a lovely voice, yet articulates this material much more interesting with actual quantitative data, than when I was working on my graduate studies. Additionally, she is not political only stating the facts. When I attended lectures in Berkeley, DC, or Texas A&M I could clearly hear the skewed facts in Texas as if Texas government forgot that after January 1,1863 the emancipation proclamation was posted throughout the globe, yet the Union General Gordon Granger with thousands of Federal Union Troops actually by made (by force) Texas Government FREE all the slaves on June 18,1865. Additionally I was merely attending these symposiums because my undergrad , master, Phd was in public administration & I required a thorough perspective when finishing up my dissertation. I never thought I would hear facts about Texas and the battle with Santa Anna , the Alamo & all the heroics of the Southerners from Tennessee. Mississippi, Georgia, Louisiana, Kentucky etc etc.. But I had heard however didn’t believe until I attended various universities other than the South. Mexico was never fully paid for California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas , Texicans at the Alamo along with politicians from the South actually decided what they would pay, Mexico wouldn’t agree , because they have never believed in slavery, ever. Just like today, we never were enlightened about Mexico fronting us & the entire allies oil to even continue WW2, and that Mexico sent their very best & bravest fighter pilots who also had to learn American English because the US Army Air Corps wouldn’t allow these pilots to be trained on tactics & English by the British. Even though, the fighter pilots with the highest statistics were the British simply because the fighter Air Fighter Group had been defending the entire UK since September 1,1939, thus they had over 2 years fighting the Axis forces, and the US according to global history has always been arrogant about history naming them #1 in everything. The only problem with this is once the rest of the folks discover the truth they won’t ever believe & must fact check everything, kinda like today. But I thought that the US caught the submarine with the enigma code machine, but it was actually the British. Yet being the wealthiest country only the US could write the history. Much like college students are taught that only the winners of any war are the ones who write the history. Yet they never thought that US citizens & Texans would ever venture away, in order to research other perspectives? In order to be a true academic one must listen, learn, and research all angles and always continue to pursue the truth. If not then you have Alamo movies that condemn the Mexican people, but they never mention that the Alamo never had any real Texans, all the people fighting at the Alamo were there because they heard that Mexico was giving land grants, but the land grants were to the people who lived in these wild horse deserts in what is now Texas. The people born & raised in what is now Texas which were Mexican Nationals were supposed to be receiving these land grants, but the people from the Southern states were going to grow cotton & continue operations just like in Confederate states , this is why they were importing slaves into Texas. They wanted to take land away from the real TEXICANS and continue SLAVERY, to this day the Texas Governor still has the Texas State highway patrol wearing Confederate Grey uniforms. Everything about Texas had nothing do with gallantry as it did self preservation of Confederate living with Slaves. The fact that Federal Troops has to come to Texas in June 19, 1865 is evident that Texas had ever intention to continue the Confederate ways before the civil war. It is because of this that we always hear about Texas wanting to recede from the United States. Thank you ma’am for a great lecture.

Paragraphs help avoid walls of text that people won't read. Paragraphs are super easy to make in RU-vid comments. When you want to start a new paragraph, you simple press down at least once, but ideally twice on the wide key, that's on the right side of your keyboard, which is marked either as "Enter" or "Return" . Note that on some keyboards, the word "enter" or "return" may start with a lower case letter. In addition, this key may, or may not, also have an icon resembling this `↵`.

If we want to brag about being the greatest country on earth for our democratic ideals, we can’t use the least democratic nations in the world as a measuring stick.
