For future, those disposable foam ear plugs can be used in both nostrils and ears to avoid this kind of problem. You can also cut small sections from a nasopharyngeal airway and use those as well. Being a medic and having a history of doing creature effects/wound moulage is a weird skill set.

mb you can answer this then. Isnt it super impractical to put clay on your face, instead of having a cast of your head made, sculpt a mask on that, and cast it into a mask?

Idealy you dont need to block the nose at any point. In example if your doing a life cast properly you should have an assistant keeping the nose clear when the casting material runs, safety first then teamwork. A " surprising" amount of people are suddenly clostraphibic when you cover there eyes nose and mouth. Even with percausion though some people still cant handle it in which case you may have to mold the different pieces of the face separately and recreate it with clay positives which is cost and time consuming,or else do what they did here. Recast the performer. :) I love the way these guys blend practical with visual fx. Though there is so much more they could do with practical. . :[ but its gradually getting cheaper and cheaper to work way harder on computers. Even though the programs they use cost 1000s of dollars gosh i dont understand.. the puppets will rise again! And be married to the visuals I hope!

Dudes, you’ve gotta be careful when messing around with stuff that isn’t necessarily meant for VFX makeup. You have to do your research make sure that people are safe and comfortable, and also watch out for allergic reactions. It’s good you guys stopped when Sam was freaking out but making sure you can breathe is super important especially if you’re doing something like that with someone whos being restricted in a sensory way. You really have to be careful with stuff like that and I hope next time you do this it’s with a professional VFX makeup artist or you’re at least being a little more careful. Sorry for the rant, this kinda stuff is important to mention, especially for filmmakers as you want to minimise the danger and discomfort as much as possible. Again, sorry for the rant lol

I was lucky enough to be part of a feature film a few years ago in which I was "faceless", and our makeup expert came up with a brilliant way to accomplish that in a way that required mere minutes of setup each day. I was able to breathe and (kind of) see without issue the entire time. It helped that my director and production team were all constantly checking in with the actors and each other to make sure everyone was doing okay and able to continue at the times when we were filming in difficult spaces, but for me personally, the clever way my makeup was done made it a million times easier than it could have been.

You gotta get straws to put in their nose so they can still breathe! Usually thicker straws. Paper straws might actually be really good since they are often thicker but might be bad as the clay could stick to them

I mean Scott Wilson who was 70 years old had to hobble around on crutches for a whole season too. Even did some wrestling moves. Mel Rooker had that thing on his hand, not to mention someone like Penny (dont know her name) would've been a little kid, yet had to have zombies eyes put in, she'd have to sit at the chair for hours, and then to top it off her character gets KILLED. (I mean that happens to a fair bit of Actors on TWD. At least the cast is absurdly friendly)

Glad everything turned out okay. But next time please consider all precautions. If you look up videos on taking head casts, you’ll see they never block nostrils, use ear plugs, and keep constant communication. Great dedication Sam!!!

I can't believe how unprepared you were, including on the second day. Honestly, not even ear plugs. If you wanted to be fancy some wired ear plugs speakers could have been used, so the actor could hear you. (You don't think that he would hear you well with clay plugging his ears, do you?) Also, about providing oxygen, you could have gotten the same tubing used in hospitals. You plug it in your nose and the tubing goes behind the head. It could have easily been hidden under the thick layers of clay.
