i remember this episode feeling three times longer than 11 minutes--its actual running time--because i felt so much older by the end of it. and i remember this episode meaning something more than all the ones i had watched before, because it screamed a sense of realism that adventure time had never reached before. it talked of self growth and finding an inner peace, ideas that were so foreign to me as a kid... but the older i grow, i associate these shows with my emotional growth, and i couldn't be more thankful.

It's crazy how a cartoon from our childhood hits damn hard that my mind went blank a couple seconds. I used to watch adventure time for fun as a kid i didn't really look for a meaning to the show, but now i realized how meaningful the show can be. Thank you for the awesome vid

My parents always laughed at me, wondered why i watched that goofy, silly child's cartoon. i'm 21 now, and this show has influenced me through nearly every phase of my life it taught me lessons, it taught me that losing people isn't always bad, and that growing up is allowed to be a slow process it taught me that there are times for fun, and times to drop the toys and get serious.

@@thescholarofcounterculture I'm 17 now and about a year or 2 ago I'd hang out with these two dudes, lets call them mordecai and rigby (wink). We'd start to hangout at school and shit, I honestly can't remember, we would smoke all day ride our push bikes around all night and blast a7x, Breaking Benjamin all the good shit, however on the odd occasion we would go mushroom picking. We would go out at the start of the night at like 8pm, pick for like hours man haha, and we'd eat them on the walk back to my friends house. I practically lived at my friends house during this one set of school holidays, I live in Australia so we have terms and then little holidays for 3 terms and then 1 big one at the end of the 2nd semester (this was during the big one), anyway during this time, we would wake up smoke talk shit have fun ride around drink all that shit, the best part is that we never went to parties and not because we weren't invited, we were just fine with it being only us. I considered these two people my first real experiences with best friends in a long time, I was always a quiet conservative person and these people just got me idk. On the topic of your comment "The Scholar of Counter Culture" this really resonates with me due to the fact that one day I had a really bad trip on mushrooms... so bad I threw up shook uncontrollably and was mentally scared for 10 or so months, crazy how losing your mind makes you reconstruct how you perceive your life's choices. Now I called these two friends mordecai and rigby because they were great friends but they also had a lot of growing up to do, and the more I sobered up the more I realised I had to as well, I wasn't going down a good path and a kick in the ass from a trip taught me that XD. I took up music im redoing yr11 and I'm working towards becoming a musician, not one that relies on drugs to create, but themselves... Life is an emotional roller coaster and I've only just reached the end of the queue.

Maybe it was just to keep the video shorter, or more simple, but I'm surprised you didn't mention anything about Finn's threads. Possibly, in my opinion, one of the greatest examples of symbolism in cartoon history is the juxtaposition displayed three times in the episode, slowly leading towards a final point of development and growth. At the beginning, Finn is a childlike adventurer, though experienced he tries to leave a thread behind to follow back in case he gets lost. This doesn't work obviously, because Finn falls immediately. Then, he finds a thread in the maze, seemingly left by someone who had the same idea as him, but it just leads to a trap, as symbolism that you can't rely on something designed to go backwards as a way to go forwards. Then, as he leaves the treehouse, he notices an errant thread coming from his shirt and breaks it, symbolizing that Finn has learned that backwards is the wrong way to go, and the only way out of a bad situation is to keep moving forward, leaving behind the problems. Even if the problems are your friends, you can meet up with them again on the other side, when something's different.

every time i saw this episode as a kid i was hit with a sense of dread and emptiness. i couldn't understand why finn couldn't escape, why he couldn't get out of the temple, and i'd always end up in tears. this episode still makes me cry, and i think i get it now. as we grow we have to learn there are challenges that you have to face on your own, and that has always been so terrifying to me. watching it now, seeing finn tread through this, never giving up hope is truly awakening. i get why i always wanted to be like him, confident. he's still scared, but he acknowledges those feelings and works through them. he is truly one of my favourite protagonists.

i love adventure time because it works perfectly as a kids show, but doesnt ever stray away from mature topics. it can do both things whenever it feels like, instead of being purely one or the other. i think that's why it works so well with its lessons, a kid can go into the show expecting silly fun, and every so often will be taught something very important along the way without even realising it

Some may say the new cartoons that got screen thanks to AT and others at that time are equally good or even better at giving this kind of teachings (as SU, amphibia and others) but AT does it so goddamn well, never felt forced, they didn't hesitate on giving Finn a very dislikeable personality before breaking up with flame princess and then paid out with episodes and character development like in this ep. Just flawless IMO.

When it comes to serious issues or choices I need to make, I’d rather not deal with them. I’m busy enough with work and coming home to think about these things is a chore. When it comes to crunch time I start to freak out. I don’t know how to make that first step in making a decision. I talk to people and they say “yup that’s a big decision to make” and that’s all. In a way I’m looking to them to make my mind up. I hate myself for being this useless, not being able to choose. Maybe it’s fear of the unknown or fear of something different. How does one find egress.
@sanchito

you just have to make the jump. let the regrets of sitting back and letting other people choose how to lead your life drive you to make better choices for urself in the future. there is only learning. i wish i could say there was this big relief/sense of exit or "egress" in life, but there's not. life is ongoing, and the only thing that changes is what u decide to change. we are just monkeys walking on a big rock:) think of that when you are struggling to stop reacting. start acting. bless

Even if choices need to be made, they don't necessarily need to be made right. Take others' advice and opinions into account, but don't let them control you. Because while it is a great skill to learn from the mistakes and successes of others, it is the mistakes and successes you make yourself that truly teach you the full story of how an action will affect the world around you. Start small with actions with manageable or rectifiable consequences, and move upward, learning how it all works as you go. Eventually you will find an answer for every problem, at first it may not be the right one, but you will learn from experience and you will find a way to go about solving challenges that resembles you as a person and that you will be able to stand by whether they work out or not.

i always saw this episode in a different way, i thought of it as ignoring the challenges in front of you and thinking and wishing of a way it could be different way, finn closes his eyes and sees his friends, sees jake, the people he loves, dreaming and wishing things could be different if he wasn’t facing the challenges ahead of him, and every time he opens his eyes he’s hit by the harsh reality that he has to still face the challenge he’s been dreading and putting off, soon dreaming and wishing gets tiring and he gets fed up of just waiting for his desires to come true that he gets up and finally sets out to face the challenge, he breaks free from sitting around and waiting for something to happen and actually faces what he needs to in order to get what he wants, sure he can try to manifest those great things to happen to him but half of manifesting something is putting in the effort, your never gonna get anywhere sitting around and waiting for a better out come, you have to get up and face the hard ships in front of you to get what you want. that’s how i always viewed at episode, about breaking free from wishing and actively moving forward.

I've cried to AT so many times, and this video had me sobbing a little bit. I haven't been doing super well recently so maybe that's why. I've barely ever understood my emotions or why this episode was so meaningful, so thank you for this insight into my favorite show :)

I learned that when im in situations like these scary moments I tell my self you can risk if you have nothing to lose in the end but if you do have something to lose you can always wait. The right time will come remember its not a race its a marathons as long as you make 1 tiny step you’ve already achieved a lot be proud of yourself and remember were all not perfect so mistakes just means its part of life don’t ever down yourself.

I was so glad Hall of Egress was included in the final marathon before the finale. It has to be one of the most emotional, relatable, and touching episodes while being one of the most difficult to articulate as to why. It just always brought me to tears the emotions it brought out in me watching, Finn's frustration and desperate desire to get home, even when he seems to be home and surrounded by friends he knows or rather feels that it still isn't true. And you just keep going and going with that feeling until finally, for whatever reason, something feels different and you can finally move on. The whole episode just somehow captured this tight chested anxiety and sigh of relief at the end, and it's the kind of abstract story telling only Adventure Time could tell so accessibly and with such charm.

Recently I've been thinking about what I wanna do after I finish school and what I want to get out of life, I know (at least I think I do) what I want to have but the process of actually getting to that point is something else entirely. I try to look within myself to find solutions but i keep getting doubts if anything I do will work, and even if it does, how long will it last? It really frustrates me when it seems like something that should be simple and comes naturally to others. I try to do my best so that people can recognize me as valuable but when no one seems to care and I attempt to call them out on it, it just pushes them away further- I want to change, but it doesn't seem like it'll matter if whether or not that happens and I don't know what to do anymore...
@ryandinosaur3089
@ryandinosaur3089 2 года назад
If you're trying your best with the goal of being recognised as valuable in others eyes then you will always feel like you're hitting a brick wall. As soon as you start working for yourself and understand that your value isn't based off of others validation then things become a lot easier. Trust me, once you leave school the main thing you will notice is how the days get longer and the years get shorter I feel like I left school 5 minutes ago and its closer to 5 years now so it's important to focus on the future and what you want to do with yourself but it's equally important that you don't lose yourself in that search, from one stranger on the Internet to another, you do you, the rest will fall into place 👌
@kntranced719
@kntranced719 2 года назад
@Ryan Dinosaur I get that, but I also don't want to spend the rest of my life alone, it seems like people are able to find their best friends or partners by doing the littlest things and going from there but for some reason, it seems way harder for me doing the same just for anyone to call me a regular friend, like there's always someone better than me out there. I try to be nice, to be there for others when they need, so why can't I seem to get that same trust back? On top of that, even if I really did start working for myself, i don't know how far I'll be able to go. I'm most likely not going to be original or revolutionary, so I'm probably not gonna make a ton of money to afford whatever I want either. Having someone to support you in that case would help you to feel like you're at least doing something that matters to one person.
@ryandinosaur3089
@ryandinosaur3089 2 года назад
@@kntranced719 in fairness if you're still in school then you still have lots of time to find the person that'll appreciate all the effort you put out there, be that in the form of a relationship or a friend and you don't need to rush that. In regards to work and things like that, you don't need a lot of money to be happy, the trouble is that you can get caught up with things like that, as long as you can afford the things you need with the luxury of being able to enjoy yourself every now and then you're already doing better than most, set small goals and you'll achieve more of them, I just completely changed my career path simply because I wasn't happy and working for nothing and I got lucky but I know I won't ever make a million and I'm doing something that's common but I'll make enough to get by and that's enough, you shouldn't worry about things like that while in school.

@@ryandinosaur3089 I'm gonna be graduating highschool in a few months time and becoming 18, an "adult" even sooner in march. When I look back now, it feels like I've just been "going through the motions" when it comes to school, I did my work and not much else and I know that's the point but, I noticed that whenever we had group projects in our classes and I try to get to know others, most of the time they just kinda brush me off or when I'm doing particularly well in a subject and other students grades are low, then some would try to act nice and try to get me to tell them all that answers on study guides, assignments, etc and never really give any hard work back. For context: I'm on the Autism Spectrum, not sure exactly where, I just know I have it and have been in spe ED classes pretty much all my life and have had classmates of many varieties. Because a lot of the students I know there mostly keep to themselves, we were often talked a lot about behind our backs for not being like the rest or having any friend groups and people would try to use that to their advantage. It's come to a head sometimes when I've gotten into arguments with gen ED students over it and have had less than flattering words said at me. Now when I get out there into the world, go to college or something, others don't need to know I have Autism so they probably wouldn't look at me anyway but brings up another question: if I can't have an impact on the people I know now, how can I hope to have any on others who didn't spend the most essential years of their life growing up around me? Hope I'm not coming off as over-pessimistic but these are serious questions to me that I need to find an answer to at some point, or I don't know if I'll ever be comfortable trying to connect with others if seems to not matter in the end-

@@kntranced719 In regards to that I can't give advice on a situation I have no right speaking about due to having no official diagnosis myself and I don't want to step in the toes on an illness I know nothing about, I can say that I have recently made a very good friend who suffers with Asperger's and he is the most kind genuine person I know, if you are yourself and continue to be true to that then in time these people will find you and stick with you. In regards to 18 being 'adult' trust me, I'm only 22 and still regarded as a kid despite having my own little family, your peers will always regard you as a child no matter what so it's important to forget and ignore the whole age category of having things sorted of that makes sense. In just these small comments you have shown me that you're a kind soul and there's no doubt that you'll easily find the right people to surround yourself with in the near future, these people may surprise you with their appearance and they come from the least likely of places but keep an open mind, people are often caught up with a lot so they come across as rude and uninterested but if you look past that then there are a lot of people who will be willing to give you the same amount of effort you can offer them and more. And never apologise for coming across any kind of way my friend, you aren't over-pessimistic, you're expressing how you feel and that is more than most can do
