for new players i 100% agree that first 2 year default contract should be managed. they go from maccas wage to 80k-100k or whatever it is, and most of their food and clothing is paid for the club already so its not like they are starving. some players stay at home with parents like the Daicos brothers so they pretty much have 80k to spend on anything like Cars or partying etc. and then the 2nd contact they get i believe is then open slather, and can manage how ever they want. No kid is thinking about high interest rate bank accounts or investing... helps them focus on footy and less on the financial side of things.
The AFL pays the players. This is to ensure contractual payments are fully met, should clubs go under. The clubs make routine payments to the AFL before funds are dispersed to each listed player.
This is a question I’ve always wanted to know about thanks for asking it. Ps: the Fiddle Fig needs some liquid fertiliser, and other interventions asap
Having a 95% salary cap minimum keeps it fair between clubs no matter how much they're worth as the salaries are fixed. It also forces clubs to try and be competitive as they can't save money when they're losing. If the players don't get the money then the owners will so anything that's better for the players is good for the game.
I would argue a salary cap floor set so high (95%) of salary cap is a major disadvantage for teams that are rebuilding because of being forced to pay overs for young inexperienced lists. If the floor was set at 80-90%, then rebuilding teams could “save” money while rebuilding then splurge on free agents when they believe they are more competitive. The floor actually hurts up and coming teams. No where around the world is a salary floor set so high. Of course the Players Union would never agree to this as many players would end up being paid less when their team is rebuilding. But it also allows financially weaker teams more flexibility to be more sustainable.
why does the players association allow the AFL to pay them so little would have been a nice question. why does the afl ceo and board get paid more than the top players too.
AFL clubs are Tax Exempt non for profits. When it suits AFL clubs they act like Businesses and sell everything to the highest bidder. But when it's time to pay tax, build a new grandstand or scoreboard then suddenly they are non for profit. AFL players would be paid a lot less if the clubs paid tax like every other business.
That’s without the pre paid Mastercards outside the salary cap!!!! The rorts ran by AFL clubs over the years are staggering like school 🏫 fees being paid, wives and partners paid for washing jumpers that they weren’t and God knows what else!!!
The biggest football league in the world, the EPL, are paid monthly for 12 months so it's cute to hear low paid minor sports follow the same structure.
