You do know that they actually did rescue slaves right? The slaves they rescued were sent back to Africa to a country that they called Liberia. It literally means liberty, freedom.

I'm white, so take this with a grain of salt, which is a shade darker than my pasty Irish skin, but meaning can be somewhat relative and the definition of some words can be very different for different people, especially in controversy, so I'd say it's the question of whether he thinks of the word as an icon of oppression or an icon of unity, and how he uses it around people with different views. It's like how some might say "I'm stupid" and truly think they are, but when I say it, I just get a thing to laugh at and move on. Even if that signifies some deep self-disdain, those words would just be an effect of that disdain, not the cause of it.
