Alan's crazy tale on how he was able to avoid the Vietnam war with a draft deferment. He was supposed to go on a mission for his church in stead but the dark forces didn't want him to go. He found a way around serving in the war & mission for his church by being a secretary for the Army.

Something to be real proud of, while our loved ones lost their lives doing the right thing

Blame the Government..We had ZERO business being in Vietnam in the first damn place.

Whatever the "right" thing is, is subjective. I came of age during Vietnam and so did my cousins. I'm female so I wasn't draft-eligible but I am vehemently anti-war and wouldn't have gone if I was draft eligible. My oldest male cousin who was draft-eligible didn't want to go, either. We had no damn business fighting a country that never attacked us in the first place. No business in Vietnam. Alan served anyway. Good for him!

I’m surprised he was able to just “speak to a Colonel” - that doesn’t really happen. Was it his celebrity? Sure he got special treatment based on his celebrity and was lucky to get in, BUT he didn’t do what Ted Nugent did (by crapping on himself to pretend he was nuts during the draft physical) or what many others did by purposefully getting out of enlisting in some capacity. Now, getting very very lucky to get into a reserve unit in 1967 is not something to brag about, but he at least served and did his time.

He's not the only one who didn't go and serve in Vietnam. Muhammad Ali didn't go because he converted to Islam and he said that The Vietcong never called him a Racial Epithet. Carl Wilson Of The Beach Boys didn't go when he got Drafted in 1965 at the age of Nineteen.

The difference between Ali and Osmunds is that none of the family was put in jail for three years nor did they pay fines! It's like apples and oranges!

Mormon missions are NOT mandatory. There are good reasons for young men and women to go on missions but they do not have to do it.

I understand that he really thinks he was originally led to do a conventional Mormon mission. But he seems to unknowingly suggest that his mother and others were using it to defer and hopefully get out of it. He seems proud and feels that it was God's will that he didn't go to Vietnam. He did go to boot camp. He was in the military but I didn't hear an ounce of actually wanting to serve his country. I just heard relief that it wasn't over there and somehow God willed that. Maybe God did. But I am surprised and disappointed how he was desperately trying to not go over. Understandable but yet a slap in the face to those who had to go.
@DebbieWilcox1
@DebbieWilcox1 5 лет назад
You act as if those who had to go was not trying to see a way around it. He did go and if you listen to him he is proud of his service and what he learned while being there. Haters will always find something to hate on.

My dad went to Vietnam, Sorry Sharon but this IS NOT a slap in the face to him. In my opinion no young man should have gone there and died. I am overjoyed for every young man that enlisted and didn't have to. I'm so proud that Alan did his duty and showed up, he put his time and training in; Unlike these dope smoking, draft dodging, college rats whose parents bought their way out so they could spit on my dad and call him a baby killer when he came home (the hypocrisy, when " they, the real cowards" burned their draft cards). Any man who serves IS A HERO. OUR SOLDIERS ARE TRUE HEROES. At any moment Alans' orders could have changed, thank God they didn't. I'm proud of my dad, I know some kids whose fathers didn't get to come home. To this day when I see a veteran I hug him and thank him for his service and his, and his families sacrifice. God knows they need a hug; but more than that...they deserve it.

My husband is the only Son & it broke his Mom's heart when he enlisted in the Navy during Vietnam. My husband told me that he grew up in the Navy. He served for 6 years. People serve in different ways & Alan did serve his country. Just like Elvis & other celebrities did during Vietnam & WW2.

Yes, I was disappointed as well. However, because Alan is famous, it was bound to happen that someone would question the brothers about the possibility of their getting drafted. I think Alan was plain scared to serve, but what about the others who had no practical skills to offer? Was that fair to them? I did not hear Alan address this.

I never had heard about any Osmonds serving in the Military. I think Alan has always been a great Talent and Leader of his Family Group. However I was so very disappointed in his beiefs that we do not need the Afforadable Health Care Act. I think sometimes prividged people forget about the rest of us as long as they are getting what they need. I am for inclusion not Exclusion. Sorry Alan.

If he's a coward for not wanting to go to Vietnam, then you're also calling most of the guys drafted at that time cowards.
