Earlier this month, Jessica Simpson marked a major milestone, celebrating her fourth year of sobriety, by uploading an 'unrecognizable' photo of herself in 2017. In this video, board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Gary Motykie explains Jessica's transformation and how she bounced back to being the Jessica Simpson we know and love. Dr. Motykie also explains the impact alcohol can have on your beauty and if drinking socially is a bad idea.
At the end of the video, Dr. Motykie's Social Media Director, Ethan, asks Dr. Motykie about Lindsay Lohan and her aging.

I quit drinking 5 years ago and smoking 4 years ago. Heavy drinking led to breast cancer. Now, I drink lots of water and excercise daily. I also cut my sugar intake by half. I'm now cancer free. My doctor told me that I've reversed the damage done to my organs (by drinking), and my eyes look bigger and brighter. My skin is soft and glowy at almost 52 years old. No deep wrinkles...YET. I don't use Botox or fillers...YET. My daughter's told me that I look like I'm aging in reverse! I don't know about that 🙄, but I do look better at 52 than I did at 40. Quitting drinking and smoking saved my life and put me on the path to a healthier lifestyle and it shows. 🤘❤👍

How do you know it was the drinking? Most breast cancer cases are because of DNA/ genetics and then a lot of factors like hormone treatments, chemical exposure (foods, makeup, pollution, etc.) lack of light, and then life style - obesity, alcohol, smoking etc.. It's great you quit smoking and drinking, but I'm curious how you know/your doctors know, and it's not a combination? I've never heard of anyone getting breast cancer from drinking, there's studies that shows that nuns gets breast, ovarian and uterine cancer more often than women who have babies.. Quite interesting 🤔

That was my father’s most repeated motto: “All things in moderation.” He had the occasional weekend beer over BBQ, and that was it. @merrywalsh2809

@@1917yee I think a person is unlikely to become an alcoholic if they have the ethical philosophy that the brakes are on, right from the start. You will avoid getting hooked. Just like heroin, you don’t think you can make a habit of doing it once or twice a week. Substances are seductive. First, they are a habit, then comes the damage to body and mind. You don’t find this “disease” in countries and the state of Utah, where people understand avoidance of addictive substances. We are all prone to addiction if we don’t understand moderation to begin with. Moderation for alcohol and narcotics is basically to avoid them. Do we call being hooked on sugar a “disease?” We do, if they develop diabetes, then yes, it becomes a disease. Having said all that, I get your point. After a certain point, when the damage is so extensive, it will not be possible for the alcoholic to get sober, as he suffers from cirrhosis and Wernicke’s encephalopathy among other true diseases.

People become dependent on alcohol and drugs to cope with the pain and loss resulting from childhood trauma, abuse, and neglect. Trauma also increases the likelihood of a person suffering from a range of chronic illnesses, from cancer to lupus to heart disease. If we want to tackle the top ten causes of death in this country, we would do well to incentivize learning parenting and conflict resolution skills so that parents don’t keep passing on abuse to their kids.

My aunt struggled with alcoholism and passed away from it. Looking at photos of her it is shocking to see the transformation and how she changed from a stunning vivacious woman into a person that was unrecognizable. She became bloated (both face and body) and facially her beautiful bone structure disappeared because she was so puffy. Over time she became emaciated and her long red hair started falling out in clumps. After watching what happened to my aunt I never drank alcohol.

Alcohol does have a lot to do with it too.. Kills your good bacteria and does so much damage to your stomach and intestinal tract that it can take months to judt be able to absorb nutrients. I got down to 100 lbs, drinking 375-750 ml vodka for 3-5 years ever day. Dark bags, and severe gastritis meant I couldn't eat anything or absorb calcium. Ugh so glad I'm done with that crap. Btw I was exercising more, sleeping more, and eating amazingly. Didn't even make a difference when I was drinking. Also, sleep is basically useless when you're drinking. You use all your sleep to process the alcohol and you don't seem to repair basic things people do when they sleep. So alcohol affects all the things that you mention to the point where, if you're a chronic alcoholic, they aren't really factors.

@user-is7xs1mr9y
@user-is7xs1mr9y 2 года назад
I hate when people insist weed is not a problem and is not addictive. Of course it is! Just because it's not heroin it doesn't mean it is innocuous. I nearly quit everything that mattered to me because of weed, and a guy I used to smoke with, was a babbling idiot even when he was not high.
@chinothepony
@chinothepony 2 года назад
As a weed smoker for 20+ years, I can weigh-in on how some of my usage has impacted my life negatively. (1) Sleep. Surprising as weed has helped me get to sleep over the years, but the sleep tends to be more shallow and I either don't dream or recall my dreams. And as my weed use continues, my sleep starts to degrade. When I stop my chronic use of weed, it takes time for me to naturally sleep again. That is when I notice a burst of clarity in my dreams as my body transitions back to its natural state. (2) Studies say marijuana creates more estrogen in your body. I'm not sure, but I do have gyno. However I've had a lot of weight issues, poor eating habits, and low activity throughout my life which I have remedied in recent years. Lost 65 pounds so far! (3) My emotions. I am normally a hyper person and my mind tends to want to process everything at once. Weed has helped me tremendously in times of high emotional stress, and has calmed me down. But the downside, is it also makes me a bit empty and disconnected in mind. Also, it is harder to process and deal with emotions on weed, because of the euphoria, and therefore things I should be facing and processing gets pushed down or to the back of my mind. This has caused spikes in depression and anxiety. I have since increased my physical activity (walk, swim, weights) and this allows me to be more confrontational with my own inner self. (4) My GI system is definitely affected by weed over time. My theory is the buzz of weed will relax and vibrate the body differently. I think the junk food from the munchies is the 50/50 cause of this, but I do believe constant weed usage can cause digestion issues, mainly within the intestine. My conclusion is weed usage can remain healthy if you have an equal dose of discipline to balance it out. I can now smoke weed and still eat healthy and remain in my calorie deficit, but I usually have to retrain myself a bit when I start to smoke again. On days where I lift weights and swim, I don't smoke weed until I'm done.
@chinothepony
@chinothepony 2 года назад
@@user-is7xs1mr9y Weed is tricky because its so habitual. I have never gone through much in the way of a physical addiction in the 20+ years I've smoked. However, it definitely is there psychologically for me. I think both the positive and negative of weed is how easy it can be to integrate it in our functional life. Because then, at least for me, I start to think that I wouldn't want to live a life without weed. Or watch a movie. Listen to music. Play a game. And so on.

In the last two relationships I have had my partner practiced being sober alongside me even though I have never asked anyone to do so, but they admitted to feeling much better overall and they had noticed a difference in how terrible they felt after a night of drinking as opposed to when it was normal for them to drink heavily. I didn't suffer hangovers, which I took as a bad sign for someone with an addictive personality. I don't drink at all. But back when I did, I always made a point of hydrating myself well before a night of drinking. People made fun of me for it, but I didn't suffer the next day like they did.

Thanks for the very informative video. As the daughter of a (long dead) alcoholic, I saw most of the behavioral effects of excessive drinking, as well as outward physical signs. I did not know the what/why of effects on the body. My dad died of cerebral hemorrhage and suffered heart attack and hypertension. I am now 69 and never drank, etc, and figure my smooth skin, good health, etc, are genetic, but now I see how drinking plenty of H2O and not drinking alcohol probably helped. Maybe it will offset my love of naps, and hatred of exercise! One can’t have everything…

I remember going to see Townes Van Zandt perform live a year or so before he died. He looked like he was about 70 years old. When he died, I was shocked to learn he was only 52! He was a long-term alcoholic and had severe health issues because of it. Looking 20 years older than his actual age was the least of his problems...

Many of the hangover symptoms actually come from the byproducts of alcohol-breakdown in the liver. When we process alcohol, we create aldehydes (formaldehyde is a type of aldehyde, to give people an idea of what we're talking about) and these peak in the blood-stream around 12 hours after we drink. These create system-wide inflammation as they circulate in our blood, and the final step of recovering from drinking alcohol is the removal of these aldehydes. It's rough!

I always make a point to have a glass of water for every alcoholic drink in addition to eating before & during drinking; for a long time I thought this was why I avoided hangovers. Now that I'm past 35 I'm starting to realize how much of hangover avoidance is genetic as my pals (who engage in the same hydrating behaviors) wake up wishing for the sweet relief of death as I bounce out of bed 😬 I wonder to what degree experiencing hangovers would have curbed my drinking when I was younger
