The Darkling is a man one should only hump then dump. Yes, he's pretty, but so is a Black Mamba snake. Mal is the type of man one loves-- one to laugh with, grow with, have his babies and happily grow old with. Only a person who hasn't been kicked in the teeth by a toxic man would find a murderous, manipulative enslaver to be remotely appropriate as a lover. I heard Ben Barnes say in one of the interviews that they didn’t want to show kirigan’s character as diabolically evil. That’s why the consent scene. After the second long kiss, he leaves her after hearing about the attack on alina’s decoy, then he comes back running like a school boy to get one last kiss. All these were written into the script to offer a bit more humane and likable side to dark Ling. They didn’t want to show him as pure black evil. He has many shades to him and even darkling himself believes he is a good person and he is doing all this for his country and all that.I’m glad that they didn’t make his character very single toned. He is still THE bad guy and villain. Sorry Ben Barnes, your character needs to go; but I still love you 🥰

@@zahrah5193 I think it's to add a bit of "real" tension and nerves + to get the intimacy up between the actors so they feel more natural in later scenes together. Have already done the difficult bits so it's easier to film the rest :)

I want to watch characters fall in love, struggle for it, fight for it, deny it, get hurt, literally loose each other and find each other again. I think him and Klaus are so similar in terms of evilness! The biggest difference I see is that Klaus had siblings tethering him to his humanity, the darkling hasn’t had a constant like that for centuries. I think they could redeem him if they chose to though.

Yes please! IMO, it would make for a much more compelling story line where Aleksander could possibly be redeemed (after a huge struggle) with Alina's help, the forces of light & dark working together for the greater good. As opposed to "Alina & Mal vanquish the enemy & the childhood sweethearts live happily ever after" which I find sooo predictable and boring. Plus the on screen chemistry between A & A is so fierce I thought my TV would catch on fire!

Same. Alina and Mal feel like siblings. Like he is her twin brother or something. Very close, almost like a part of her, but very non-sexual. Cause like if you've been together since childhood and also through the changed context of him becoming a fearless fighter... And there was still no signs, that they are attracted to each other physically. It probably won't work as a romantic partnership, if they try.

@@strayfreckles yes! They don't have that sexual chemistry at all, they look like the best bffs but NOT lovers. I just hope they give us more of darklina in later seasons. I loved season 1 but i think it was a little rushed i mean her days on the little palace, darklina build up and darkling's real motives being exposed, all of this needed a little more episodes.

And dreams do come true because as long as I remember during a recent interview when asked what she would want to see from Alina if there's another season, Jessie literally said she'd want Alina to be a bit evil who would want to keep her power, the possibility of her life with the darkling because although she feels betrayed, there's a part of her that still wants to be near him. And Ben has been promoting darklina since the very beginning (kindly read his other IVs instead of sticking to just one) . And just for the record, I really don't care what the s&b cast ship. They did their job & provided me with enough darklina contents and that's all I asked for. You really thought you did something with that?

Yes so true!!! I think a lot of people want them to be endgame but don’t consider the ramifications. So i totally agree: either the darkling gets fully (and i mean FULLY) redeemed, or Alina goes FULLY evil. I can’t see how there can be middle ground in there.

The only feasible way I see Netflix bringing them together is through a redemption arc. Although an initial corruption arc for Alina would be amazing as it would help illustrate the fall of a hero for the sake of the kingdom, and in turn mirror the past of the darkling.

Netflix already discarded book accuracy when they removed all of Mal's misogynistic quotes from book 1. Malina was so boring if Netflix keeps trying to push Malina the show will flop

@@evev4480 Darker characters have been redeemed to be honest. The Darkling was always a fan favorite, even amongst book fans. If they could redeem Jaime Lannister for pushing a kid out of a tower without thinking twice, and turn him into a more morally grey character that was loved by audiences, there's still hope for The Darkling.
