A new electric vehicle company hopes to take on Tesla with its outdoor adventure trucks and SUVs. And its deal with Amazon to build 100,000 electric delivery vans could help it succeed.
Founded in 2009, Rivian is focusing on upscale electric trucks and SUVs with an emphasis on outdoor adventure. CNBC's John Rosevear calls them the "Patagonia of electric vehicles."
Rivian launched its first vehicle, the R1T electric truck, at the end of last year. It's been working to scale up production and is planning to ship its SUV - the R1S - built off of the same platform, later this year.
It's been a long and arduous road to get to this point. But Rivian has received some major assistance, including $700 million from Amazon in 2019 and $500 million from Ford a few months later. Initially, Rivian and Ford sought to develop a joint vehicle together, but the companies ended up canceling those plans.
However, the partnership with Amazon is still on track. Following its investment, Amazon said it would purchase 100,000 custom-built electric delivery vans, part of its move to electrify its last-mile fleet by 2040.
When Rivian went public in November 2021, it had one of the largest IPOs in U.S. history. But the turbulent economy has cast a shadow over its rocketing success. As the market responded to inflation and fears of a recession, the stock took a big hit. But with the Amazon deal secured, some are confident the EV maker can weather the storm.
"When Amazon invested in them…but more importantly, put a commitment to buy all of those vehicles from them, they changed the market dynamic around that company," said Mike Ramsey, an auto and smart mobility analyst at Gartner.
Last month, Rivian and Amazon rolled out the first of the electric vans. They are starting to deliver packages in a handful of cities, including Seattle, Baltimore, Chicago and Phoenix.

It is actually smart from the Amazon side to have a custom delivery fleet made "from scratch" to their specific needs. Instead of converting regular vans.
@bOOmbOOmProd
@bOOmbOOmProd Год назад
Honestly it was a publicity move to green, which is the goal. However as a company you don't want your entire fleet reliant on another company for service, which is a huge risk. As with the current ICE offerings, finding a repair shop and turn around times will be much faster. I won't invest in any EV tech for at least 10 years.

@@bOOmbOOmProdIt wasn't a publicity stunt for going green. Going electric has huge benefits when it comes to savings in fuel, and regular maintenance. Now personally I think Rivian and other car makers need to catch up on the manufacturing side. Tesla is murdering it with profit on their cars from what I've read. I'm surprised Tesla hasn't tried the smaller delivery trucks. Or even construction trucks. So Rivian should focus on that. No one is excited about Rivian vehicles in my mind. They are generic as hell. They need to generate excitement for their brand. Same with Lucid which creates amazing cars, but eh. No personality.

Companies look at things like this with accountants etc.. most likely the diesel/gasoline powered delivery trucks are estimated to cost a lot more to maintain and refuel then it is to charge one of these trucks or even replace a battery that far down the line. If it was a waste of money they wouldn’t do it, it’s not about the environment to them

@GeorgeVCohea-dw7ou
@GeorgeVCohea-dw7ou 2 года назад
Yeah, too much of the positive talk is getting these to market, there is nothing on longevity or repairability. Fleets have service contracts and utilised to the fullest lifespan. Without a viable aftermarket, these things are doomed outside of the corporate world. This being said, Amazon will have enough real world data by the end of the decade to potentially make it a feasible concept for general marketplace.
@yayagazab4449
@yayagazab4449 2 года назад
The EV companies have a monopoly on repairs & service which is where they will make bank. However, I think the mechanics in Massachusetts sued Tesla because state law allows them to work on any car, but Tesla wouldn’t allow them. It will take at least a few generations to build a huge workforce of generally trained skilled techs to be able to fix these EVs at a reasonable cost. Also, the recycling business has to increase as well to take care of the obsolete models and their toxic battery materials. I think Tesla is already factoring recycling in their business plans.
@GeorgeVCohea-dw7ou
@GeorgeVCohea-dw7ou 2 года назад
@@user-zlxelaZz I don't know, that Amazon contract may just be about all Rivian can handle, outside of the few niche premium vehicles, over the next decade. If it doesn't perform satisfactory to Amazon's expectations and tolerances, the whole company likely won't survive. Focusing on one primary design is great for a start-up but also a double edged sword! Aftermarket is the one crucial element that EV corporations are overlooking to their detriment. Tesla can pull this with their high end buyers who have more money than sense who expect that premium brand exclusivity, but once they enter the general marketplace, that's a whole different customer base with vastly different expectations of how their daily driver is supposed to operate and where they choose to repair it. Middle class Americans want choice, convenience and repairability, not waitlists and backordered. Toyota rarely has any vital parts more than 48 hours away from pretty much any point in the continental US, and this doesn't even factor the non-OEM components!
@GeorgeVCohea-dw7ou
@GeorgeVCohea-dw7ou 2 года назад
@@yayagazab4449 If Rivian sticks to a mostly uniform parts design amongst all the the vehicles, the repairability and survivability rockets. Lots of components can be functionally identical. Relays, for example, are generally the same among brands, and pre-internet days, one most probably would not have been much aware of interchangeability for some part numbers. The big players already know what their customers want, and if these EV exclusive manufacturers fail to integrate some standard business practises, they risk swiftly dying out without a chance of a buy out rescue. These companies can do better than the big three from the ground up in this twenty-first century by modifying how things are done, but this means exceeding customer service, not hindering it. Directly licencing out designs for parts would add a revenue stream and make customers more comfortable buying aftermarket early on and is a legit possibility. It would also potentially add an emergency supplier to Rivian's manufacturing capabilities, since this is a real world issue at the moment. I know this is already something that happens, but Rivian is in a ground up position to make it standard business practise across the board on the front end. The second hand market is almost more important to the auto manufacturers than first time sales. When people have a good experience, they are more likely to return to the source, when it comes time to buy new. A teen's first car influences a lifetime of buying decisions.

One side says EVs are the solution, the other side is stubborn and makes up BS like EVs cause more pollution than ICEs. BOTH sides are wrong. The solution is not electric vehicles. Because the problem itself is too many vehicles. The solution is making cities walkable again. If people were able to get around quickly and safely by walking , cycling, or using public transportation, then there would be no need for a vehicle for most people most of the time. Sure EVs cause less pollution. But using your own two legs causes ZERO pollution, other than wearing out your shoes more. EVs are a failure of capitalism trying to solve a problem when the real solution is changing the law. The government is causing the problem and it needs to change. Most municipalities have laws like requiring massive parking lots, wide roads, etc and they completely ignore pedestrians and cyclists as an afterthought, making it dangerous for them to get around with a car. Making everything spread out so far for the car, which takes up a ton of space, makes it impractical to walk or cycle as well. We need cities to be built again like they were downtown in the old days. We had an experiment after WWII to have everyone drive, and it failed. Some people can't, some people clearly shouldn't, and it's not sustainable. We made huge changes then, having the government invest in roads and infrastructure and subsidizing the automobile and fossil fuel companies, so we can make big changes again today. Ironically though, the people against it are ignorant and take it for granted that we have roads today, because it was the government that made that happen. Yet they don't want the government to do anything today like building new sidewalks or bike lanes.

@vanishingfox1339
@vanishingfox1339 2 года назад
While I don't agree with everything you said I do think you have some great points, City planning is awful, people should walk or bike more but we have some limiting factors of course like where is the city located , how spread out is the city , where do we draw the line when its acceptable to dive vs walk, bike or use public transit. The simple solution is to make no vehicle zone within the city that make sense too, like major downtown areas but then you run into the problem of where are the people who are not from said city are going to park their car? How do the stores, building, ect get supplies and services/repairs completed? How do emergency responders get to people in a timely fashion? I cant see a car-less life for everyone in the US , its unfeasible with current technology, millions of people myself included will not move to a city to give my personal car or truck. Why? well I've done the city thing and its not for me, I don't like crowds all the time, I value my peace, privacy and love nature. In other words I can go touch grass at will , just feet from my door. But I think instead of pointing the finger at "Capitalism" and "Law" people should go back to community and culture. Changes start there and work their way out. Politics is down stream of culture. I think most people lost community as a whole but that's a big topic for another day.
@eyesuckle
@eyesuckle 2 года назад
Agree with your points. However, I think the EV--and more importantly, self-driving vehicles--are stepping stones to your idealized future (which is where we want to go). Self-driving cars will ultimately solve the problem of parking, as these cars will only have to park long enough to discharge or take on passengers before rejoining traffic. And I believe that ultimately they will solve the real barrier to the future you envision, which is North America's love of car ownership. For the majority of middle-class and poor people, car ownership will become an unnecessary expense, indeed, just a headache, when you can walk down your driveway and have a car waiting there for you within 30 seconds to take you on your way at city bus prices. No worries about charging, maintenance, insurance, registration, teaching your kids how to drive, finding parking or traffic jams. Ultimately, these vehicles should be able to coordinate their movements and eliminate traffic problems. Only fools, germophobes, or the very rich will insist on driving their own cars. Well, they and people who just love driving and the romance of cars. But I think they'll end up spending most of their time at the racetrack, the drag strip or the demolition derby. I have nothing against these people but they're now obstructing our way to a far more responsible and practical transportation infrastructure.

@@eyesuckle lol well call me a fool then, I think as far as fully autonomous vehicles in the US goes its only logical to implement them in cities and and large metropolitan areas in the near future. As far as autonomous large vehicles ie Class 8 trucks there is no way you can allow them on the same road ways as passenger vehicles until you reach at least near 99% autonomous infrastructure due to the timing it takes for a collision to be avoided is much greater with the amount of weight being hauled. Other than the obvious safety concern you have to think about the legal responsibility, who will be at fault and who will pay the bill for damages. There are sacrifices that can be put into place such slower speed limits or separate road system for large vehicles and so on. I think EV and fully autonomous vehicles are going to take over but I don't agree with the ownership part for the whole country. Sure for the large cities and its suburbs it makes sense but for those who do not and can not move to the cities or its suburbs it doesn't work for them. It would very authoritarian to make this group of people relocate or leave them in the dark for transportation. Unless we are going to into split vehicle economy, meaning that cities get EV fully autonomous vehicles and rural small town get ICE or Hybrid or EV non autonomous which is perfectly fine. It would meet emission standards for the country as a whole. Again I'm only concerned about the problems from now to 15 years out with implantation of this tech. That's where the rubber hits the road per say. Don't get me wrong I'd love to take a nap as my car drives me home safely after a hard day of work, I just don't see it being a reality before I retire. And the point you made about the US not doing this is funny because I don't see any other country doing thing all in at the very moment for a lot of the same reason I mentioned. I'm still waiting on the promises from the 1940's of flying cars and food pills, I'm not saying it to be mean its just a reminder to check to see if these options are really as good as they seem. It all sounds good but what are the risk and rewards. EV at this moment are not zero emission, neither is solar due to the manufacturing and waste after the life of the product. We cant recycle 100% of it. Heck just sitting here breathing is emitting some form of emission. Do we need to be smarter about our emissions on our modes of transportation? Yes. Do we have to put all of our eggs in one basket,? No. Again I don't garment policies are the whole answer nor is technocracy. Its Community. Does your local Community feel that their is a need for this? City communities would most likely love this due to cleaner air, less noise and less traffic congestion.

It depends on more than one thing. I worked for a company that bought an entire fleet of a new Volvo semi truck. The entire fleet was lemons and within a year of accepting the new fleet the company was bankrupt. Amazon can't rely on these new trucks. They may work fine in a laboratory setting where there is a mechanic a few feet away to fix the vehicle if there is an issue, but will they work as advertised in the real world?

UPS and FedEx are already buying and using some electric delivery vans. But it's mainly in the testing phases. They've been testing vans for a few different electric vehicle companies. The main ones I know about are Workhorse, Arrival, Brightdrop, and Ford. Ford makes an electric transit van in a few variations. They are supposedly number one in their segment. Brightdrop farmed out production to a German company in Michigan while they build a factory in Canada. The German company will make 500 delivery vans for FEDEX. Arrival is building their first "micro- factory" in South Carolina. So they haven't started production in North America. Workhorse has seen major setback after major setback, but hasn't gone out of business for whatever reason. They are still hanging on and recently got an order for 1500 vans in Canada.
@AWildBard
@AWildBard 2 года назад
@@Donkeyearsa Very true, they have to prove their viability. There are definitely problems associated with electric vehicles, and not every company will succeed. But I'm sure that electric vehicles will replace ICE vehicles. The internal combustion engine has never been better in history. They are more reliable and more efficient and more powerful than ever before. But eventually they will be replaced, because when the price of batteries goes down, and the reliability of battery electric vehicles is proven, the electric vehicle is significantly better. Maybe that's not today, but we are on the crest of a wave of dramatic change.

Rivian is, contrary to the title of this video, in a very tight spot right now. I do think they will survive, but they are losing up to 2 billion dollars per quarter. They need to master manufacturing and building vehicles and the software, coordinate suppliers and distribution all at once. Plus they are also placing Rivian brand chargers in or near adventure locations The cash from Amazon really helped, but hopefully they didn't bite off more than they can chew in their expansion.

@eyesuckle
@eyesuckle 2 года назад
I think the future of Rivian is bright for the very reason that one of the commentators mentioned: They hit the sweet spot with their product and its styling. People love these trucks. Personally, I think they're beautiful! But there are two big ifs: 1) After their recent price hike and inflation still trotting along at a pretty good clip, how many customers will ultimately be able to afford their pickups and SUVs? They're rapidly approaching the $80,000 or $90,000 mark. That's a lot of money for a vehicle. 2) Ford, GM, and a couple of EV startups all saw that the pickup truck and SUV market was the place to jump in because the profit margins on these vehicles, even with their giant battery packs, are bigger. Tesla is going to be making Cybertrucks by next year. So Rivian's chosen market segment is getting crowded fast, and all their competitors are already undercutting their prices. Again, they've created a great product. But by the time they ramp up, will there be enough people left to buy it? I think they're wise to start building that factory for the R2 platform in Georgia now, because the affordable EV is where true domination for the EV industry is going to be fought. There's a much larger customer base there, and nobody has truly jumped in with both feet (outside of China) because the profit margins are so much smaller.
@Outwardpd
@Outwardpd 2 года назад
A lot of the price we see in EVs is the R&D costs being put into the vehicle's price tag, and they are also cheaper than they seem on the surface because many ICE vehicles are selling for way above their sticker price atm. This is to say that things aren't as bad as they seem in price but also that prices will fall over time as companies move to capture more of the market after covering their initial investment costs. Things always start out as more expensive than necessary and become cheaper over time.

Rivian has to deliver all those vans to Amazon at the fixed contracted price and time, and there's no real certainty that they could deliver both with 10%+ inflation and shortages. Also pickups and trucks are expensive, heavy, un-aerodynamic and requires large payload & towing capacity, requiring expensive high capacity batteries, and Russian nickel is now off limits. They'll keep burning investor cash and will be forced to raise prices of their vehicles, and we'll see how they'll ramp up production if they could no longer raise funds in the capital markets at affordable rates, because interest rates are going up. I won't write them off just yet because the US market is big enough for Rivian, partly because Tesla doesn't have a comparable offering. But these next few years are going to be real tough for the upstart carmaker.

Rivian pickup trucks for example have shown that there estimated range on a full charge is not accurate, when you add in factors like payload weight or even a trailer net weight before loading it, or even something as simple as a person body weight can become a factor in estimated range, ( if you are over weight) all of these factors can be implemented into any new EV in order to determine the true range of an EV. These factors can also contribute to the longevity of the battery pack in side the EV. And I believe this is the single most reason why 1 in 5 EV owners go back to an ICE (internal combustion engine). vehicle Thanks

The biggest hurdle in the automotive industry is the cash flow. The power that Tesla is doing is that they now own the gas station as well as the production. It makes it a lot more of a valid investment. Rivian needs a stronger cash flow than just a car. The internet of things is all about that. Any Amazon tech partnership that could increase revenue and cash flow would be beneficial. I would also like to see sensor data for auto insurance companies as a deal with the automotive industry. If amazon had their tracking chips that they had for their own store in each package, the loader would simply just need to load out packages and the delivery driver would be able to find the zone where the package is using their conttrol to where the package/items are located saving time for the loaders as well as the delivery driver.

2000 components, over 400 suppliers. Thats a mess for a modern auto EV business that had no legacy issues. Ford sold on it shares as the share continued to sink. Margins loss and EBITA loss and cashflow losses are mounting. Trying to drive 2 distinct part of the business at such an early stage is mad for any new startup and now the share price reflects the issues they are struggling to manage out. As I see it it needs more cash injection and its battery supply contained beyond the desire to increase production. R1T is a lifestyle pickup not a work pickup and its just too expensive when you add required specs. I would like to see then succeed but as present. It is not looking anywhere as positive as this CNC segment implies. 2000 components, 400 suppliers in a ramp up situation is not going to easy the issues Rivian faces. The R2 and a new plant in Georgia, too much stress, too much financial and a production strain. As for Jeep. It will never complete in that segment. Its an entirely different consideration. 100K Amazon fleet from now until 2030 is not many, R1 orders are not that many once one the initial run rate can deliver those, what next? Invest with caution.

We should slow the rollout down a little bit and not cause widespread power shortages. We only have 1 chance at this.

This video here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7LMgmg0I0GA.html outlines how misinformed your views are. We absolutely should not ramp-down the production of EV out of concerns about energy supply.

@@LuKe-cq9il they are, but we need to start building new ones, but we aren't. CA is shutting there's down. Natural gas is cheap compared to building nuclear power.

Amazon recorded a 3.9B loss on Rivian holdings. How long will they tolerate this?

Well it took Amazon 14 years and billions of losses before it became profitable so they know a thing or two about it.

@@johnl.7754 right but I think they knew Amazon web services would be big enough thing to support the prime side of Amazon. What path to profitability does Rivian have? Tesla is killing Rivian.

It’s called investing in your company in the long-term future which a lot of people do not know how to think 25-50 years ahead…do you plan on living then? Delivery 🚚 isn’t going anywhere

Rivian is well positioned to capture the low-end EV market and the EV trucks market. It has taken a very different path from Tesla.

Saw one of these unloaded the other day. Never would get one. My Dodge Ram 2500 4 door 4x4 Cummins gets 24 mpg and can go 615 miles on a tank. Cost 70k like the rivian and they weigh the same. That is one heavy electric Honda Pilot lookalike. No thanks

I think if Rivian had concentrated on the Amazon delivery trucks and shelved the consumer vehicles, they might not have gotten so much buzz and the (temporarily) high stock price, but they would have been able to deliver the vans in large numbers and make money much, much sooner. I think it was a strategic mistake.
