AMC bought the rundown Carmike in my town, didn’t remodel at all, and now call it “AMC Classic”. I saw Endgame there in a packed theater with no or barely working A/C, which really made you realize, while dripping in sweat, why they dubbed the theater “Classic”.

There's 2 theatres in my area. One is the locally owned, more popular and preferred one. The other is AMC Classic 8, formerly Carmike. AMC isn't doing remodeling either. They just lowered the tickets to $5.99 every day and cut their showtimes to one 7pm on weeknights. The seats are still uncomfortable and non-stadium. Meanwhile the other theatre is slowly upgrading to better seats (even some recliners for smaller theatres) and it only takes them a couple of weeks to do that.
@TheLizcass

It may not seem like AMC has spent a lot of money upgrading the Carmikes they bought out, but believe me they have. I work at The AMC Classic Crawfordsville 8 and they spent a lot of money on getting the Freestyles installed, painting the building and most importently getting all "life and safety" aspects of the theatre up to code. This is something AMC is extremely concerend about. They are slowely upgrading other things, but it will take time. They took on a big project with the Carmikes.

@venividivici20
@venividivici20 5 лет назад
@@aaronlimitless when Wanda Group bought out AMC they decided to sell off the Canadian locations. Not because they were not profitable, but because they wanted to focus on the US market. AMC came to Canada in the early 2000's I believe (perhaps the late 1990's - not entirely sure) so they were never a big player in the Canadian market. In 2012 they sold 4 locations to Cineplex (biggest theatre chain in Canada), 2 to Empire (owned by the grocery store chain Sobey's, and they later sold their theatres off to Cineplex and Landmark), and 2 were closed. So it wasn't an issue of Canada not being able to run a company. We are a smaller market and given AMC was not expanding here it just made financial sense. I've been going to the Whitby location since it opened and Empire said it was their most profitable location when they acquired it. It was original an AMC 24, so it was double the size of the closest Cineplex. Landmark took it over and they upgraded 23 of the theatres to reclining seats, the lone IMAX theatre now has better rocker seats (I haven't been to an IMAX movie since the change as I prefer the recliners). They also brought in Coke Freestyle machines. Kind of a rarity really in these parts. I will say their concession offerings suck. Hot dogs, soft pretzels, pretzel bites and a pretzel wrapped dog are the hot items outside of popcorn. They are currently in the process of renovating the interior or at least the main lobby area. Going to feel strange when that is done. Most amusing thing dating back to when it was the AMC 24 was the carpet between guest services and the concession stands actually had a giant swastika. It stayed like that for years. My biggest complaint dating back to the AMC days was they were so damn slow to refill the flavour powder machine. Eventually they just chained plastic shakes to the garbage cans, but those were go empty quickly. Empire and Landmark charge for tiny packets of flavouring, so I always just brought my own from the store.

However as someone who worked there, if youre apart of the staff, its hell keeping things that nice. They under staff and then overwork the very limited staff. Bert Paredes was a senior sight and sound engineer for over 35 years. He was also an ambassador that would pick out hot locations. He would also over see the construction of new buildings and renovations. He has worked with many high profile Hollywood executives and actors. I’ll list just one of Will Smith and they will always go back when they need to do any premiere or events. He essentially was the man behind the silver screen making the sight and sound perfect. AMC movie pass subscription allowed me to see End Game in 3D Imax ($25 ticket) and use free $5 vouchers (based on a point system). I think it's fair to say millions of movie tickets and millions of popcorn orders and millions of sodas were sold because they were pretty much free for the $20 monthly AMC movie pass. The pass now costs $23.99 in California but a regular AMC here costs about $14.95 for a standard ticket. I think I "spent" $450 at AMC but I have only bought $60 worth of monthly passes.

The introduction of reserve seating and incline chairs was crazy for me. I viewed the theater experience as a hassle when I was younger. Having to get there early, long lines, saving seats, and competing with people getting 'free' seats. Then ending up with the neck breaking seats at the front. As i got older I noticed a big decline in move goers even after AMC converted our Lowes. I thought, they're just going to go out of business with this audience. Using the enhanced seating arrangements was a great move to combat this. Instead of stuffing the screens to max capacity make it a quality experience instead, especially since the seats weren't filled anyway. The Alist membership made me go from a 1-3 movies a year to a 2-3 movies a month person. I'm a sucker for movie flavored popcorn. It's still expensive with the free upgrade, but nothing compares to that flavor and butter. I always sneak in my water bottle though lol. In the end they are getting more money from me, but I am having a much better experience now.

I work at AMC theatres. I think the thing that keeps people coming is genuinely how over the top reactive our customer response system is. If a guest gives us a bad score on a SINGLE part of the survey, the entire thing is written off as a zero and tanks our OS scores. Essentially, as a manager this means checking OS scores is like a daily thing for me just to make sure our building stays afloat. On top of that the company regularly gives us these contests that give the crew incentives to win, such as large quantities of money to spend on items for the break room or parties and stuff. Another thing I'd like to note that may also contribute to the company's success, even in a small way, is that literally every position is designed to be a teaching sort of deal. Even mine. When you are a crew you are constantly trained and reminded on how to do things correctly so that you can be a crew lead, demonstrating mastery of the building's processes. Once you're a crew lead, you're then taught on delegating your underlings and taking control of whatever area you're in. Essentially giving you basic leadership skills, preparing you for supervisor. The supervisor role is really nothing more than manager in training, cause you're made to assist a manager in a specific department as well as handle, count, reconcile, and deal with massive quantities of cash, not just one register. Essentially this where where they show you how to be a manager. Once you hit manager, even that position is a learning process. I work in HR, but I will only do so for 6 months, which is about the time needed to truly get the hang of the entire department. After my 6 months are up, they will rotate me to another department, and so too will all other managers be rotated. The management cycle is 3 departments: HR, Food & Beverage, and Admin & Booth. So if you work in management for a year and a half, you could theoretically understand and do literally everything the theater could possibly require. After that they train you on how to be a GM with their MLP program, and so on. Effectively I think this helps as it consistently inspires mastery of your job and rewards you, however despite those rewards, each promotion leads to more responsibilities and things to learn. This has a good effect on how the business is ran, because the employees are always getting better at their jobs, meaning more satisfied guests. I dont mean to come off as some sort of shill, but it's something I've noticed during my 2 years here and it kind of takes me back to realize my entire career here has been nothing but me learning new tricks like a dog. Cant say I'm upset about it though.
@et1680
@et1680 5 лет назад
Scorpio Syndrome I feel like the one you work at must be pretty well run then because the one I’ve worked at is nothing like that... it’s not well organized at all and crew lead gives you nothing more than a minuscule pay raise, you don’t really get any extra responsibility because you’re just “an example” instead of there to actually try to better the theatre, or at least that’s what management says. You’re basically not allowed to ask anyone to do anything until you get to supervisor and until then you just kind of give up on your job since you can’t do anything except work yourself to death to try to better the place as a whole.

One innovation you forgot to mention is that in 1995, they invented Stadium Seating, which is the standard for theaters now. The recliner conversion were wisely done with their non stadium theaters, and their business went from squat to booming. They are slowly doing this to their stadium seaters too, but only the low volume ones. Also a big factor is their sound system. In the mid 90s were most theaters were equipped with DTS or SDDS sound, AMC still stuck with the Dolby Sound mixer, which was still the standard. Yes DTS and SDDS were great for their time, but Dolby responded with Dolby Digital and Dolby 5.1. By the late 90s, Dolby 5.1 was leading the way while SDDS and DTS faded, forcing the competitors to change their system, which was costly. Now, Dolby Atmos is the ultimate in Sound Quality, and their Dolby Theater usually do the most business, as they sell out first, yes, even more popular than the IMAX theaters.

My AMC @ Katy Mills (Texas) that I've been going to since 07 was getting pretty dated, so I think a year or two they decided to renovate it and I must say it's now my go-to theater. I got my AMC Premiere Club rewards (pay $10/Year) and essentially I never pay for online ticketing fees (all theaters now have like Alamo/Regal/Cinemark), get Tuesday Savings as usual, and save on concessions by getting free size upgrades. AMC is succeeding because they're listening to consumers and improving the movie theater experience, even if it means with fixing the little things (rewards systems, seat recliners, etc..).

As a manager from an independent theater, AMC A-List is easily the best deal for frequent moviegoers. Movie Pass has terrible customer service, gets showtimes wrong, doesn't ship the cards in time, and probably isn't going to last the year anyway. I'm not a fan of AMC, but if you're looking for the cheapest way to watch a ton of movies, theirs is best. That said, independent theaters often have great offers and a nice sense of community and personality.

I quit waiting for an interesting movie to arrive on DVD. I semi- regularly picked up gift cards at Sam's /Costco and bought $50 worth of AMC credit for $40. If the movie is boring, you take a cat nap. Brilliant business decision to lure folks out of their homes. I dont see movies unless I get a full recliner. Love this channel. Peace.

One thing that's ignored is how effective they are at utilizing their larger number of screens compared to many competitors. Growing up near their headquarters it wasn't uncommon for their local 20 screen suburban theater to screen a lot of smaller, independent, and foreign films that would normally require a trip downtown to the art theater. Nothing too obscure, mainly larger limited releases. Now living in an area with a very large Chinese population it's not uncommon to see major Chinese films showing at AMC. Especially things like big releases around the Lunar New Year. They also tend to show a good number of Indian-produced films to capture that audience. Other local theaters might do special events through Fathom Events, but AMC schedules this on their own. It won't ever form a backbone of their offerings, but they're taking greater advantage of their smaller theaters to increase the variety of what they show and keep audiences that would otherwise go to specialty theaters.

@@DankMemes-ms6xl I recently found one Cinemark theater in town and it was freaking sweet. Big fluffy recliners. All the local Regals are like 80s chairs. And even the dinky little marquee on the edge of town has better picture and sound than them.

The closest theater to me is a Regal with an Icon a short distance down the road from it.

I swear, it smells like they mop the floors with butter in that place. You walk into an AMC, and the scent of butter just slaps you in the face. ...but it smells so good!

I've never heard of AMC. I live in Wisconsin, and the only chain we have is Marcus Theatres. Also, my ticket for Endgame was only $6.60... yup. Also, in my town, we have a local movie theatre with one screen called the Rivoli. Their tickets are half that, maybe even less, but they show movies that are out of the chains (a month or so after they've been released) so it makes sense. Anyway, this was still interesting to see.

As a Latvian, I was a bit shocked when you said AMC is big in Latvia, since I haven't seen any AMC theatres here. Maybe they just hold the rights to our movie theatres or maybe own some of our movie theatres. Anyway, great video!

I used to hate A-List because they had their own priority lanes at the snack bar. Now that I'm an A-List member, I love those priority lanes. I never saw a movie more than once in the theater before joining. Now, I've seen a few movies multiple times and they get me for $14 for a soda and popcorn every time.
