I think you left out a critical fact about the creation of PayPal. *The PayPal Mafia!* I think one of the most influential variables on a new company's success is the abundance of vision, hard work and grit that the initial entrepreneurs provide. The fact that every one of the founders of PayPal ended up creating their own super successful tech company(s) is a big clue as to why PayPal did so well to begin with. It was set up for success from the start by these guys! Anyways, thanks for another interesting and informative video! I Love watching the content you make, it's such a fun way to learn about these companies that dominate so much of out daily lives yet go so unnoticed by most of us! *Thanks!*

Who would have thought that just over a year and a half after this video was published the relationship between Ebay and PayPal is being dissolved. They have a new Amsterdam based payment company coming on board, called Ayden. Supposedly they already handle these services for Netflix, Uber, and Spotify. As an Ebay seller, I'm pretty happy about it. Payments for items sold goes directly to my bank account now. PayPal was becoming more and more difficult to deal with also. Maybe a video about Ayden is in the future for Company Man.

Paypal became highly profitable by charging people to move numbers around in their system. The fee is the same, regardless if a card is involved or not.
@zachlondono
@zachlondono 5 лет назад
If it's so easy to just move the numbers around then why dont you make your own payment platform? Its almost like it's not as easy as you think to create a service which is compliant with all of the commerce laws while also providing security, ease of use to their customers, and creating a name brand which is trusted by enough people that they are willing to use it to transfer significant amounts of money. Not to mention the software engineers and administrative employees that were required to build up the company. The fees are their to pay all of the employees' wages while also paying for server time as well as any other administrative/marketing/running costs which they have while also trying to be profitable in order to grow the company and pay their owners dividends for investing in the company. So no, they dont really just charge fees to "move numbers around their system".

@zachlondono

@@ninelivesstealer paypal is not a monopoly, it only has about 60% market share and there are so many other options for transferring money. Why would you want the government to socialize a service like this with such low barriers to entry compared to so many other industries anyway? There would still be fees (and they probably wouldn't be low considering how bloated and inefficient government programs run) and it would likley destroy all other competitors while probably stifling any further innovation in the field. This also has nothing to do with the original points that either of us made. Maybe come back with something relevant rather than just sad attempts at trying to demean me or the government just because you feel you shouldn't pay for the services of others.

I used to have an x.com account- it was the first online-only bank. It was pretty cool, you could put money into money market and a couple other funds super easily and you automatically got a couple hundred in credit line. The thing that sucked with x.com was getting money into your account. Direct deposit wasn't really a thing available to most people. You could mail them a check or pay $15 at a local bank that you also have a separate account at to do a wire transfer - so not many good options.

@lwvmobile

Here is one reason: Back then, setting up an online payment processor for credit/debit/bank payments was usually a very steep initial subscription fee and either a monthly fee and/or a per charge fee. In other words, up starts would have to pay a big payment to set up a payment processor. Then PayPal came around with zero up front fee to accept money from others, only taking a fee either when you withdrawal money or accept money. No money up front, now that lets tons and tons of people open up shop to sell goods online and on eBay. Then they grow so big by nickel and diming all those transactions at every level, making hand over fist in money and leaving those small sellers wondering where their profits went.

One of the things that helped PayPal get so big is that eBay instituted policies that required people to offer PayPal as a payment method (and in some cases either implemented or tried to implement rules that banned the use of other payment methods for certain kinds of transactions). I know they got in trouble here in Australia for trying to implement rules that required the use of PayPal and only PayPal for transactions.

I got Paypal back in 2003 when I first started using eBay. I deleted my Paypal account several months ago once they started advertising to me via e-mail based on items I viewed on my desktop's browser. They overstepped and I didn't like that.

Hey, and let NOT FORGET if you're a seller on eBay you're now FORCED to offer PayPal. That wasn't always the case, I think around 2010 eBay made it mandatory to offer PayPal, or simply close your eBay account if you didn't want to.

I joined PayPal when they were owned by ebay. I was ordering lots of things from ebay, and lots of sellers accepted PayPal. This meant I didn't have to give strangers my credit card number. PayPal also offered buyer protection, which you didn't mention in the video. More secure and buyer protection on every payment was a great deal. I use PayPal whenever I can for those reasons.

Anyone else remember when Paypal started blocking small businesses out of their funds for months, or even for good, for no given reason if they wanted to do it? That was a hell of a few years. Seems they stopped, and it didn't affect me, but always left a sour taste in my mouth.

When I used to use eBay I signed up for PayPal because I figured it was safer. PayPal was a safe way to pay for purchases on Ebay. On eBay you were buying from unknown people. So a way to pay was a perfect choice.

Um, one of if not THE primary reason they grew so fast and were the perfect platform for online commerce in the early days was buyer protection. Also known payment escrow. The seller would not receive it until the buyer received the product. Back in the early days online scams were a dime a dozen and without PayPal you were pretty much guaranteed to get taken to the cleaners at least once.

The thing that makes PayPal better than others like Cashapp is the customer security. You can always get your money back through the dispute center if the person tries to scam you, or doesn't hold up they end.

❤❤❤❤ THANKS FOR THE VIDEO I LEARNED ABOUT THE HISTORY OF PAYPAL
@garlandragland
@garlandragland 5 лет назад
One thing you don't mention is how PayPal and eBay are having another break up. PayPal, even after they spun off into its own company, continued to be the payment platform used on eBay. However, eBay is now rolling out eBay Managed Payments to replace PayPal on their service. Most eBay sellers (of which I am one) are furious about it, especially since some of us our being forced into eBay's system. So basically PayPal is about the lose what they say is roughly 10% of their business. On top of that, PayPal has a service called PayPal Working Capital. It works by giving capital loans with a flat one time interest rate to small businesses that use PayPal based on their transactions via PayPal. Those given loans select a payback rate, say 15%, and that much is taken from each payment that is received. As you can imagine, A LOT of Working Capital customers are eBay sellers so everytime they sell something on eBay, PayPal takes their payback percentage. But, with eBay getting rid of PayPal, this becomes a problem for Working Capital customers as eBay sellers will no longer go through PayPal. eBay has created its own capital loan service in response, backed by Square, but it is not nearly as good and is actually a terrible ripoff with high interest rates. It's ironic and an example of history repeating itself: eBay failed to create its own payment system so they brought PayPal so they could control payments on their website. They then spin PayPal off and then they have that problem all over again where they can't control payments so here they're at it again. It makes me want to slap eBay's board across the face and yell "then you shouldn't have spun it off you idiots! That's your fault!"
