I remember the argument made about Japan surrendering because of the Red Army and not the nukes. It was by a 'professor' at a 'college.'

There's a book called the Japanese destroyer captain and it is written from the perspective of a Japanese destroyer captain and he specifically talks about how there was a coup attempted on the emperor and that is one of the reasons why it took them so long to surrender. The emperor wanted to surrender after the first bomb. But due to his generals in Tokyo he was unable to because he was locked in a bunker.

The nukes were their best option in a list of shit options. It’s always a difficult subject because it was a difficult choice. But aside from the political motivations regarding the Soviets… there was truth to the idea that they were choosing the lesser of two evils. I used to ask why they couldn’t demonstrate it, but they barely got Japan to surrender after leveling two cities, and there were still efforts to destroy the emperor’s surrender message. The Allies and the Japanese themselves calculated deaths from a land invasion of mainland Japan to be in the several millions. It would have been essentially an extinction of Japanese culture because of the way they felt about surrender and the lies they were told about Americans. They threw their own families off of cliffs and blew them up with grenades before surrendering. The bomb shock to leadership really was a less devastating option in terms of immediate loss of life. More people died in firebombing attacks. It was a horrible thing to do, but it was set during the most pivotal and catastrophic war in human history. Ethics were lower on the list of priority and there was no good choice. Only the least bad one. War is hell.

My Grandfather’s Army division was going to be among the first wave to invade the Japanese Home Islands. He always said the atomic bombs saved his life. He didn’t expect to live if the US invaded. Japan needs to own up to all their atrocities they committed during the war which they still deny to this day.

The Emperor word were "For the first time in human history the Enemy has used a cruel bomb we have never seen before." He didn't even know what a nuke was and had to call it cruel becuse not only was the bombs enormous but the people were dying of radiation slowly and for the first time ever.

On top of dropping two atomic bombs, it took the Japanese until September 2, 1945, almost three weeks later to officially surrender to the United States and Commonwealth Forces in Tokyo Bay. From primary source material, those three weeks were insanely tense. The Americans continued to be alert right up to the moment the Japanese signed the surrender documents on the USS Missouri. Another thing, I don't know any other nation that would drop millions of warning leaflets over Japanese cities before and right up to the atomic bombings telling the civilians to evacuate for their own safety. Also, both Hiroshima and Nagasaki were legitimate military targets, including their war industry, headquarters, and the fact that the civilians would have been fighting the Americans and Commonwealth Forces had we invaded the home islands.

Have you ever done a story on Lucky Yamaguchi? He survived Hiroshima. He was just far enough away to survive. He got on a train to Nagasaki as that was his alternate work place. His original work place was radioactive dust. He tried telling the bosses there that the Americans wiped the city out with one bomb. The other thing that I think is quite telling: not a whole lot of Japanese art about the Russian invasion. WHOLE HELL OF A LOT on the bombs. For example, Godzilla was literally supposed to represent the bombs. Sure seems like the bombs made a much larger impression on the Japanese than the Russians did

I actually like what they said and they have definitely made me change my mind and think for a second about history. Cause I said for a while that "history is written by the victor," so I'm glad I was told a valid reason I am wrong and made aware of my ignorance.

Hirohito made a second speech to the armed forces where he never mentioned the bombs, stating that the reason Japan had to capitulate was that that they were fighting far too many enemies and the Soviets entry strengthened that coalition against them. The bombs used in his first speech were both a political and moral move to portray his country as the victim. The Japanese hoped Stalin would be an intermediary between them and the allies for the better terms, the USSR war declaration dashed those hopes. The leaders didn’t care about the nuke on Nagasaki due to being more focused on the Red Army’s assault on Manchuria, in fact the Japanese public were being given instructions on how to prepare for further nuke attacks.

Hysterical. And sadly true. While it's fruitful to look at different perspectives, what gets omitted and you guys nail: what is the context that generated those narratives. Actual history is complex because humans and their motivations are complex.

The coup attempt actually refutes another anti-American talking point, that one bomb was enough and the US rushed to drop a second one instead of allowing the Japanese to surrender. The fact that even after the second bomb some Japanese officers STILL opposed surrender shows that two atom bombs were just enough.

I was today years old when I learned we tried to warn the Japanese before we dropped the first bomb.

I’m gonna have to argue on the tank statement, mainly because tank warfare is already as finicky as it is. Depending on the Sherman variant, whether it has a 75mm or a 76mm or a 105mm Howitzer, 5 Sherman tanks could absolutely get stomped on by a German tank. This is also inversely so for German tanks, exemplified by the one story of a KV-2 fighting off a German platoon by itself for days. It is also very possible for 5 Sherman tanks to rock a German tank as if it was nothing, except for egregious examples like the Tiger and the Panther due to their construction. This is not to say they are invincible, but the tanks are still very well designed. At the end of the day, it comes down to armament and crew, and we here at America were really, really, REALLY adamant that we didn’t need 76’s for like, the longest time. The Brits however had the right idea, and used their 17-pounders, thus making one of the best tank destroyer-esque tanks in World War 2.

Now were in this Country and some on the right are banning classic books. Mostly a dig at Desantis in Florida but other States are following suit. If someone wants to make an informed view you need read all you can both right, left and in the middle and then still take it all with a grain of salt.

I always cite the death toll in the Philippines to make the point that the bombs saved more lives than they took. More than 300,000 Japanese soldiers died in the Philippines. 80% of that was due to starvation because they refused to surrender. If the US had to invade mainland Japan it would have been a self imposed genocide. Japan exists today because we dropped the bombs, not in spite of them.

To put in perspective as well, the Japanese empire was killing 225,000 civilians across the Pacific every month as America was pushing through the Pacific, this was another factor in Americas decision to try and end the war quickly using the bombs

Its funny people say we dropped the bombs because of the soviets "unexpectedly" attacking japanese holdings in manchuria when in reality the US specifically asked the USSR not to renew its non-aggression pact with Imperial Japan in 1945 & to join the conflict in asia.

ive never heard that japan surrender cuz of Russia, i was told/learned (back when schools did their job of teaching not brainwashing/indocertining). ive seen SOOO many history shows and special (again way back in the 90s and 80s when they had to have FACTS not how much DEI we can cram into it.)
