EMP's are the underdog of military arsenal. Due to this, not many people understand how these amazing devices functions. I'll explain the basics of how these weapons work and their effects! It would help a lot if you hit the like and subscribe so you could encourage me to make more vids!

Some of this is correct. An EMP would probably take out any vehicle with electronic fuel injection or a spark plug so, only an older diesel with mechanical injectors stands any chance of survival. Also, depending on its strength, an EMP can be physically harmful, causing burns and temporary, even possibly permanent blindness. The video only talks about EMPs generated through nuclear detonations and solar flares, or lightning but they can be generated other ways, too. Basically an EMP is a massive burst of static through the air, so most anything that generates a decent sized electrical spark creates a small EMP.

@@unknownwolf4046 No, because your ignition system will still fry if it's gas. Newer electronic injection diesels are just as screwed, if that's any consolation.
@N0B0DY_SP3C14L

@@BayAreaBully7667 yes. You would have to shield the component in a faraday cage/bag. If the wave of electrons that comprise the pulse are not absorbed/deflected/dispersed by anything else before reaching your phone, they will enter the circuitry and overload it, frying it instantly. Doesn't matter if it's on or not, disconnected from a battery or other source of power, the circuits will fry.

EMP is not the most destructive way to use nuclear weapons, but it is very efficient considering how widespread and disruptive the damage potentially is for a single expended nuclear device. The more devious and dangerous aspect is that this kind of thing might be considered by some regimes as somehow more politically acceptable and less escalatory way to use nuclear weapons in hopes of avoiding adverse consequences of doing so.

We just had an EMP about a week ago in the solar storm. A lot of farmers today make extensive use of GPS. Well, during the solar storm, a lot of farmers were having to go back to using markers to mark fields as they were planting because the solar storm knocked a lot of the GPS satellites out of service. I would also guess that it also knocked out GPS for any navigation. Of course, I'm NOT reliant on GPS for anything, so for me, it was just another day of the week.

Static is formed when two insulators rub together and the friction causes electrons in the most conducting material to flow freely. The material with the most electrons is negatively charged and the one with the least is now positively charged. That’s what happens in storm clouds. When enough static builds up, the electrons jump from cloud to cloud, or cloud to ground in order to equalise the charges. Now in order for electricity to jump through air the air needs to get ionised so it can be conductive. Every centimetre of a jump requires thousands of volts. So a lot of energy is in lightning.

@One.Disgruntled.American
@One.Disgruntled.American Год назад
It all depends on where the bomb was detonated. The closer to the ground the less serious the effects. An explosion 250 miles above Kansas would cripple the entire continental US. And it's not an electrical charge that causes the problem. It the ionization of molecules in the air that causes extreme heating and burning up of electrical components.

Electrical signals are the basis of information transfer in the nervous system, making this the only possible area of concern. Nerve cells operate at about 40 to 90 mV between the inside and outside of the cells, which are separated by a double layer membrane about 0.1 micrometer thick. This membrane gives the cells insulation that would take a voltage in excess of 1MV per meter to breakdown. Since EMP voltages peak around 50KV even an intense EMP event would not cause a breakdown of the cell membranes. Furthermore, the triggering time of a nerve impulse is about 1 to 2 milliseconds, while the initial pulse of an EMP is about 1 nanosecond. This means that EMP would not cause false triggering of neurons. EMP passes through the body so fast, current cannot begin flowing in the body to cause any harm.

@@howtheory Plugs may survive but a diesel also requires a fuel pump for its compression. The fuel pump would be damaged.

That’s what I’m wondering. Like if you remove all your fuses and car battery too? Would it maybe save most of it?

Any automobile with an Ignition system would be Fried. Got an old car you Coil is fired, older car Condenser explodes. If you can start you car with a fried starter. Maybe a Model T with a crank start and a Magneto would work. Otherwise go with a Mechanical Injected Diesel with a clutch and a hill.

What if the device is not on or plugged in?

It would still get damaged. The wiring or traces on the boards would have a current induced in them by the magnetic field. The only real way to protect them is shielding (ie buried in the earth, or protected by a faraday cage which would be another way of shielding them.
