This video is a breakdown of when and how to replace fire rope seals. I've done it in one take in the hope that it might give you some confidence to give it ago yourselves. Chimney sweeps are often very helpful if you can't face it alone, but if you have any questions please leave me a comment.

Thank you, this has been really useful. I would normally have only bought the manufacturer's product but you sounded so genuine when appraising the rope you developed that I decided to go for it! I would love a video which shows how to clean my one door Highlander 10. I don't really mean the glass but rather the inside. I do my best but it seems very awkward trying to get the ash from the top of the plate where the smoke goes up the chimney. I can't access it properly but maybe I'm missing some instructions. I wasn't left any by the company who installed it while I was away on holiday. Thanks again for this video; I've bookmarked it!

Thanks a lot. I am producing some other videos about our rope kits, but thanks a lot for your order. In terms of a video of your stove, if I ever get the opportunity to test it I definitely will!

To prevent siezing threads in these vulnerable places, a smear of copper anti-sieze on the threads will do the business and make unscrewing much less hit and miss...

It's usually easier for the general public to ask the chimney sweep to service the stove at the same time we clean the flue,if using the silicone its best to leave it a while to dry before you fire it up,Another great video,as part of the service I personally just loosen and nip back up the screws for the glass to stop them seizing

Possibly a wire brush attachment for the drill like yours too. Ill check the links in the description box before i go on the lookout for said items. Thanks again for your advice 😊

Thanks for that - just the kind of helpful walk around I needed before doing the door on MIL's little Aga. I used Cal Super Seal, which I was slightly surprised to see was cream-coloured as opposed to the black you used. It was also quite runny, despite a damn good shaking (as per the bottle). Presumably it was okay. I just expected it to be more like a paste. Seems to have done the trick though so far. I shall be keeping a beady eye on it.
@TheTortoise

I prefer to use silicone based stuff, but I have used the Super Seal. As you say it is runny which is why I don’t prefer it, but it works fine.

Great informative videos. We have a westfire uniq 17 (now westfire 44 according to one of your videos) and want to replace the door rope. We think it is 13mm, but our door doesn't appear to show any signs of glue being used at all. The rope just appears to be pressed into the groove. This is how it came from the factory, we have owned it from new. Would you recommend fitting the new rope with glue or do we just press it in as it was before?
@TheTortoise
@TheTortoise Год назад
A lot of westfires rope is just pressure fit rather than glue. It makes fitting and removing nice and easy. I would do the same, no need for glue 👍.

We’ve started selling rope and glass kits on our website. So if you message us on there we should be able to supply ropes for this without a problem. With regard to the screws I would take an old screw to my local hardware store and they should have them (it’ll be a standard size). The brackets can be almost anything, so nothing too special required. A lot of people will use something as simple as a metal washer, just as long as it laps over the glass to retain it. Just don’t do them up too tight!!!

Hi Gabriel & community. We own a beautiful old Fisher Grandma Wood Stove. We have searched for doors that have glass but it’s hard to find. I was wondering if something like the door you are working on (10:56) May fit our stove. Not sure. I can get you the exact dimensions of the grandma doors to see if there are any to your knowledge that may fit. Question is open to the community as well.
@TheTortoise
@TheTortoise Год назад
Unless Fisher make doors with glass, this will be a very difficult find. Stoves don’t tend to be flat, they normally have shape and the doors are carefully matched, so finding other doors that fit is a nearly impossible task. The more practical route would be to take the existing doors to a metal worker and have him cut a hole etc, this is a pretty simple task, and will be far safer too.

Do you have a video and instructions/recommendations for just replacing a piece of glass? I have an Appalachian Stove that has three 6"x11"? pieces of glass in the front door. One of them has shattered or otherwise broken and needs replacing. Where do I purchase such a glass in the U.S / Ebay/ Etc..? and how do I just replace the glass? Tks

hi there, great video. im struggling to get my vision 500 to seal evenly on refining the door, whats the procedure from scratch on re fitting the door and adjusting,?once the ropes been changed. ive lost count of how many turns ive got on each adjusting hinge etc. and im now a bit confused....appreciate your advice
@TheTortoise
@TheTortoise Год назад
If it’s all in a muddle then I would do it by eye from the side of the stove. Slowly wind them in until the door meets the body evenly on the top and bottom. Then typically do one more half or full turn in, and then wind the door handle until the handle side again meets the body evenly. If the hinges are too tight and are pushing the handle out then wind them both out 1 turn (which should maintain evenness). It is a little stop start if you’ve got confused, but definitely worth it in the end.

If the glass can move is it a tight enough air seal to prevent smoke leakage? Got me worried now that I’ve tightened mine up (not overly tight) but have I done it tight enough for a good air seal but “not tight enough “ for ease of expansion….help!!!!!
@TheTortoise
@TheTortoise 4 месяца назад
Definitely don’t over tighten. Stoves are designed to leak, so trying to seal them is pointless. You won’t get any leakage around the glass as it’s easier to leak out of the door or the air vents, so don’t worry about it. Leaks on stoves let air in, getting smoke out would only happen if you had a chimney/draw issue so it’s not something you should be struggling with.

Which glue do you use?
@TheTortoise
@TheTortoise 2 года назад
I used one by Calfire, but any heat silicon works perfectly. They tend to be black and rated for 300C, I’ve actually tested using normal silicon and even bathroom sealant purely for interest sake and even with a stove at full temperature they performed perfectly. Didn’t think it was something I could recommend though 😁

Firstly...why ruin a perfectly good table by not placing cushioning/cardboard under the door. Secondly , instead of sticking the glass flat rope/gasket to the inside of the door which may not be perfectly flat and dirt free. You clean the glass and stick it directly onto the glass for a better adhesive contact. And Thirdly, when tightening the glass clips in place you place a small piece of asbestos padding or glass gasket tape the same size of the clip...between the clip and glass. This is great in allowing for any heat expansion of the clips.
@julianadam216

How do you know if the rope is asbestos?
@TheTortoise
@TheTortoise Год назад
The vast majority of very old stoves didn’t use ropes at all, and glass fibre ropes have been being used for about 25 years at least. But if you have an old stove then always best to assume the worst.

@@1markdrums I’ve had something similar when a dog dropped a toy behind a stove. It took a while to smell, but the longer it was on or the hotter, the more it stank. Took us ages to find, but that was an acrid plasticky smell “vile”! Particularly given the age, this has to be an external factor (something on or near the stove). You could get it hot and try and smell if it is something in the chimney above the register plate, but otherwise I’d try and use a mirror to check behind the stove, or underneath.

Just done mine, hunter hawk 4. A word of caution, the glass rope, especially the old rope can cause skin iritation and you with bare arms ! Long sleeved shirt or overalls would be safer. Fit door immediatly after installing rope and latch closed, this will bed the rope in the sealer or glue, leave for a while then light a small fire and allow to warm slowly - job done !

How do you know if the door of the wood burning stove is leaking and how do you find where the leak is?
@TheTortoise
@TheTortoise Год назад
The simple test is shutting paper in the door. If it easily slides out then it’s leaking, if there is some resistance then that’s okay. If it holds the paper and it won’t move then it is very sealed, this normally only happens with new ropes.
@xxxBKBxxx
@xxxBKBxxx Год назад
another trick to see air leaking doors: with the wood stove burning well, light a (preferably long) match and run it along the seam, when you see the flame being directed towards the seam you know where it is drawing ourside air :-)
