HOW AND WHY I TRANSFERRED
So this is a fun little update - haha I am no longer a Science student! Sort of... I'm still getting a good ol' BSc but in a different faculty.
Making the decision to transfer was one I made carefully and over a long period of time. It was not easy and I really struggled to make peace with the idea of "leaving sciences." This was by far one of the biggest obstacles of my first year... I felt as though I was wasting my time, what I was doing wasn't worth anything, and honestly as if I wasn't meant to be at UBC. But now!!! I am so excited to actually study something I am passionate about woohoo 😊
If you think you might transfer, stay tuned for a simple break down of how to do it and the things you need to be aware of! Initially it's not all too tricky but when it comes to course planning it's a bit of a pain.
If you have any questions or just want to talk you know the drill 👇🏼👇🏼

Hey Maddy! I just watched this video because I am also in science rn and am considering changing into LFS next year instead of choosing a science major in April- but it seems really frightening to give up on science as you also said in your video. How hard is it to get into LFS tho? I don't know if my grades are going to be good enough to get accepted, can I still change afterwards, or is it going to be too stressful to catch up and really ending up as a waste of time then? what do you think after your first term in LFS now? It just seems like such a huge thing to change faculty...

Hi! I’m a new watcher and found your vids really helpful. One thing I’m having trouble finding any info on is transferring to UBC with a college diploma (my school does not have a transfer agreement with UBC). I want to pursue a bachelor science majoring in freshwater science. However I didn’t do so well in high school, and don’t have any chem bio or physics credits. I’ve completed a 3 year environmental science program at my college with high marks, I was wondering if you (or anyone watching) had any insight? Should I take those high school courses online before applying? Thanks!

Greetings sister, I just wanted to know if it's possible to shift from CS in ubc-okanagan to ubc-vancouver for CS (after my first year)

Hi! I am honestly not too sure. I would encourage you to reach out to your academic advisor or science advising to see what they say. I can't imagine it would be an issue but you need to make you meet the specified requirements. Good luck!

heyy i just wanted to ask if faculties and schools are the same thing?? i’m applying to UBC in the fall and i’m not sure if i can put the school of journalism as one of my two choices?
@MaddyA
@MaddyA 3 года назад
Hi! Schools are typically smaller and are a sub category of a faculty. Schools are much more specific. I think you can directly apply into “schools” assuming you are given the option when you apply. So if it is listed then yes you can, if not, then no. Hope that helps!

Hey Maddy, I'm in a similar situation as you as I'm more interested and passionate about FNH, but am entering the Faculty of Science in September for my first year. I think I also plan to transfer later on much like you. Is there a lot of catching up to do/ set backs if I do choose to transfer to FNH? Will it be as if I'm starting all over again and am back in first year? Did I waste time and money doing something I knew wasn't what I really wanted (even though I don't really know what I want)? Big fan of your videos btw, they helped me a lot with course selection :) 💖

There were a few courses I am behind on. BIOL 155, WRDS 150, and LFS 100. I had the intention of staying in sciences so I had to take two physics courses, which, had I not taken them, I would've been able to take WRDS 150 and BIOL 155. So really, if you are careful in your course planning, You might only need to catch up on LFS 100. You won't be starting over in any way! Most science credits are transferable. What you need to make sure of though is that you have completed at least 24 of the required LFS courses in order to be promoted to 2nd year. That's where I got stuck, so even though this is my second year at UBC, I will considered "first year." It is absolutely not a waste. That was something I really battled and had to tell myself was not true. If I had not pursued sciences and taken the time to explore my interest/lack there of, I wouldn't have figured out that LFS is where I wanted to be! As much as it is hard, you have to trust the process. That is something I learned this year, on top of everything else haha I hope that helps :) All the best to you this fall!

Hi Maddy! I am in grade 12 and I applied to Bachelor of Arts but I want to do sciences. Do you think I will be allowed to do first year science courses during my first year of uni in BA? and then switch my faculty by the end of first year, as I would have down the first year BSc courses like a regular student does. Thanks😊
@MaddyA
@MaddyA 3 года назад
HI! You would have to double check with enrolment services or Arts advising. I know it is definitely possible to take science courses in your first year, but I am not sure of how many. The trick is that because you aren't in sciences, you don't get first dibs on the science courses so registration can be quite challenging. I don't think you need to have all first year courses completed to transfer. What you should be mindful of is that transferring faculties isn't a guarantee, so if you only take science courses, and not enough arts credits, then you may not be promoted within arts. Just something to be mindful of! I hope that helps :)

Hi Maddy! Like you I’m in a dilemma I’m thinking of transferring to arts, so I wanted to ask: in the transfer application there’s the option to start in May-June and was wondering If that would help me get caught up before specializing. Also how long did it take for you to know that you’ve been transferred?
@MaddyA
@MaddyA 3 года назад
Hi Pallavee! You could choose to start then as it would allow you to take some courses over the summer. Either way though, you can take summer courses regardless of whether you start in May or in September in the faculty of Arts. Double check an academic advisor on that one. It was pretty quick - i can totally remember but I want to say there was about a month-two months between when I applied to transfer and when I was admitted to LFS. Hope that helps!
@pallaveekhetoo2116
@pallaveekhetoo2116 3 года назад
@@MaddyA thank you for replying Maddy! I applied today and I’m so excited ! I also wanted to know do you think switching from science to arts would be a competitive selection? Because I want to start to plan my term 2 courses according to my art degree (which is so much lighter than my science schedule 😂) so I don’t waste my time taking unnecessary science courses .
@MaddyA
@MaddyA 3 года назад
@@pallaveekhetoo2116 Of course! Thats so exciting! I'm not sure how competitive it is... I would assume it is. But if you meet (and surpass) the requirements to transfer you should be okay. Honestly, to be safe, I would always assume there is some competition. You can easily make a worklist for term two and if you get accepted just register in those courses rather than waiting to the last minute!

@@MaddyA I was wondering since I’ve completed only 4 courses at ubc, would they also look at my high school grades to determine my eligibility for transfer? Also thank you so much for answering all my questions! It really means a lot ☺️
@MaddyA
@MaddyA 3 года назад
@@pallaveekhetoo2116 Not a problem I am always happy to help! I'm not sure... given that you are now a student at UBC I think they would look at your UBC grades (thats what they did with me but I had all my first year grades). Double check with Arts admissions - they'll know for sure!

Maddy A just one question to ask you. Do i have to complete 30 credits before summer term starts? Bc I’m thinking of taking less in term 1&2 and take rest of the courses in summer.. i was wondering if that’s too late for the application for changing faculty.
@MaddyA
@MaddyA 4 года назад
@@user-se8zr9qc6n Nope you do not! Just make sure you've taken enough credits to be promoted. The deadline to transfer is sometime during the school year. You would complete your first year in whatever faculty you are currently in and then would hopefully transfer in second year assuming you are accepted.
