Thanks so much for this, im such a newbie (have only had machine 4 days) and have been struggling with removing the cast on end of waste yarn. I love this ripcord idea. Plus sad to say i didn;t know whether it was the cast on or off end giving me so much problems. Now i know its the cast on end. thank you for that. Still, i have made one beanie that looks great and 2 with holes and so on through it, (le sigh) and one that shows some tension issues..... but practice practice practice. Going to watch more of your videos they are so informative. Thanks again for sharing the knowledge.

I also like to have an inch or so of waste yarn so I can hang clothespins or binder clips on my work in progress to help prevent missed stitches. I can clips the weights to the waste yarn and my work won’t get snagged or damaged.

Thank you this was so helpful! So can you pick up the stitches using any type of stitch…? I have noticed a slip stitch has NO stretch when making clothes. 😭 Could I use a half double crochet or are there any that you recommend?

Yes you can! Having crochet knowledge will totally help you make your clothing items fit so much better. I like to go for hdc when I need a lot of stretch but keep in mind since we are adding crochet to knit there is typically empty space that doesn't quite look right. I added surface stitches to a project to hide the holes recently and it added a cool look but still had that stretch from hdc.

Wait so ….. when would you need to use the old fashion method of picking up all the live stitches? To me … I would always use waste yarn it seems the most proficient. Unless there are instances where you can’t use waste yarn?

So you still need to pick up the live stitches after you cast off with waste yarn but it's a much cleaner and easier method. I don't use waste yarn when I'm making double knit cinched beanies or projects where a cinched side is needed.
