Sling is not only using unleaded Rotax engines but now making propellers quieter. Kudos.

These are great achievements and a necessary change for the survival of GA, IMHO. GA has been stuck in a decades-long technological rut that it's finally starting to get out of. Imagine if a large proportion of the cars in your neighborhood sounded like rods built in the '60s and designed in the '40s and '50s with lead-belching engines and inadequate or no exhaust muffling. Over the decades, the public has gotten used to whisper-quit cars, so it shouldn't be too surprising that complaints about GA noise are on the rise. GA aircraft will never be as quiet as modern cars due to the presence of the propeller and the necessity for full-throttle operation on takeoff, but efforts like this, as they become more common, should go a long way towards helping to address the push-back, at least to the point of slowing down airport closings or heavy restrictions on training activities. Kudos for working collaboratively with the community on this.

Thank you. You are walking the walk on keeping airports open. Now other companies need to voluntarily follow your lead. Hey, that's right, companies seem to like writing that they are the "industry leader" but are really stretching the truth or lying. Well, Sling is truly the industry leader in the future of flight school and general purpose light aircraft!

Wow, you guys are really going above and beyond in addressing the community's concerns. Very impressive! I know the goal is to reduce noise external to the airplane, but just curious, is there a noticeable sound decrease in the cockpit?
@SlingPilotAcademy

Yes, there is a significant decrease in the cockpit. It is quite different

As a pilot, I have never understood why we have fought the noise issue for decades -- and lose -- with no thought given to how to make the planes quieter other than restricting flight operations. I applaud these gentlemen for their work in finally addressing the elephant in the room. Now it's time for the true acoustic professionals to get involved. Cessna, Cirrus, Piper, Lycoming, etc., should be hiring these professionals who can address the noise issues minimum impact, if any, on performance. We all spend a lot of money on headset technology to isolate the noise in the cockpit. It's time to stop the noise at it's source.
@airops423

Sadly, especially in California, this is often not about noise at all. Or lead, or safety, or whatever excuse of the day they decide to use next. It's just a real estate play. Airport neighbors buy their house at a lower price relative to the local area because it's next to an airport, and in their mind if they complain enough just maybe the airport will get shut down and their property value will skyrocket (when the airport is turned into a park of course, god forbid they build more housing). If they were actually concerned about noise, they would start with the absurd road noise pollution that is way more ever-present and obnoxious in the LA area than air traffic will ever be. Great job on the engineering work on this, but I fear nothing you do will ever be enough to "satisfy" the community.

Seriously. Whereas Sling is working to quiet their exhaust, the "Fast & Furious" wannabes are out there doing the exact opposite. They modify the exhaust of their cars to be as loud, disruptive and annoying as possible, and with impunity! 🤬

Couldn’t agree more with this comment. The real motivation to close airports is the value of he land. As to noise generated, the noise from Rotax based small aircraft pales in comparison to other aircraft, even before any noise reduction.
@randal3122
@randal3122 6 месяцев назад
agreed. sometimes its just karens too. i used to be its oval track racing. most of the tracks have been around for decades. long before the houses were built around them. people move in and then start complaining. then the city starts to impose all kinds of noise constraints that make it very difficult for the race tracks to operate. and the races were only on saturdays, and not really all that loud in the neigborhoods near them. i think you shouldnt be able to complain if whatever the noise is was happening before you moved in

@@SilvaAdventures ya its not progress. just like these airports, race tracks are a great thing. its honestly the price of people being karens and only caring about themselves and their ego

Unique challenges in unique times. I love you guys' perspective and attitudes. I'd love to join sling to carry on my own flight training, but I do get the unique challenges you are facing in that area too with training demand being up. Keep up the great work. 😉 Ben

Excellent work on the Whisper design. It may revolutionize the design of all piston prop planes, eventually -- not just the Sling. Also, this is an excellent video explaining what you're doing and why you're doing it. I hope that your work will result in the city's relaxation of the training restraints it has recently imposed on the Sling Pilot Academy and other users of the airport. If not, that will prove the wisdom of @airops423's view that what's happening at Torrance Airport does indeed have more to do with real estate development than airplane noise.

Yes I am one of the folks that was not happy with your first introduction to the whisperer. I am sure it was most targeted for publicity. Thank you for explaining and showing what you have done. Lots of work went into this. Thanks for the explanation. Job well done

@@EJWash57 not really, I am not happy with the folks that are trying to close down airports because of noise but I still appreciate what sling is doing to appease them. My worry is those same California people that already hate everything petroleum will next shift their concerns to something else that will infringe on our freedoms

jets use kinked blades instead of straight ones to spread out the pulse over time. Some helicopters too. Is that what you are trying? a ducted fan might also be potent

Perish the thought of something like a Spitfire, a Sea Fury or an F4U Corsair having to dampen the sound of their engines to satisfy the Karens who's lives are so empty & miserable, that they continuously need new reasons to complain, to sayisfy their misery.
@andygetz7343
@andygetz7343 6 месяцев назад
Single engine trainers are not loud. It's cool they're making them quieter but this is no Baron or Piaggio 180. Seems like a bunch of Karens just don't like airplanes. People fear what they don't understand. People hate what they fear.
